The Michelin Man returns

I was only the Michelin Man with the heavy coat but am now, much less so. I will always have a muscular 'twelve-pack' build and will not be a six-pack, but I do pack a lot of stomach muscle and curl fifty-pound dumbbells, for example.

However, no one giving me thousands of pageviews is expecting Brad Pitt, but rather a theologian/philosopher that looks like a small strong man.

I am not completely stupid.;)

A joke sent to me:

If you've ever worked for a boss who reacts before getting the facts and thinking things through, you'll love this...

A large company, feeling it was time for a shakeup, hired a new CEO.

The new boss was determined to rid the company of all slackers.

On a tour of the facilities, the CEO noticed a guy leaning on a wall.

The room was full of workers and he wanted to let them know that he meant business.

He walked up to the guy leaning against the wall and asked,

'How much money do you make a week?'

A little surprised, the young man looked at him and replied,

'I make $400 a week. Why?'

The CEO then handed the guy $1,600 in cash and screamed,

'Here's four weeks' pay. Now GET OUT and don't come back!'

Feeling pretty good about himself the CEO looked around the room and asked, 'Does anyone want to tell me what that goof-ball did around here?'

From across the room came a voice, 'Pizza delivery guy from Domino's.'

Christmas thoughts and satire

Facebook

It would be a cool graphic where someone crazy rides down that mountain.

I am not trying to be offensive or attack anyone with this article, I am making some theological and satirical observations concerning Christmas. The blog is satire and theology, after all.

Teacher fired

Portions:

'A primary school teacher who left a class of 25 pupils in tears after she told them Santa Claus did not exist has been fired.

When excited youngsters became rowdy as they talked about Santa, the supply teacher blurted out: 'It's your parents who leave out presents on Christmas Day.'

The class of seven-year-olds at Blackshaw Lane Primary School, Royton, near Oldham, Greater Manchester burst into tears and told their parents when they arrived home.

Mothers and fathers then complained about the incident and were sent a letter by the school saying the substitute teacher, who only worked at the school for one day last week, has been disciplined.

The school has now said it will not hire her again...

'A lot of parents were disgusted and complained to the school.''

End

I have no strong feelings or thoughts on the above story, but Jay Leno mentioned it on the Tonight Show and it is a good precursor for my presentation with Christmas albums. But, the school story makes me reason that at secular school and within secular society, Santa Claus for the most part, is more important than Jesus Christ and the date of his birth as is traditionally celebrated.

Most of my research for satire and theology and thekingpin68 comes from Jay Leno and David Letterman, by the way.;)

Is the celebration of Santa Claus an aspect of the problem of evil? Well, I think it is an evil as Claus surpasses Christ in importance in the minds of many and is taught to children as the central focus of Christmas. But, Christmas and even Santa Claus can also be used for good as Christians and Christian churches use the Christmas season as an opportunity to present the gospel. The same can be done on Halloween as the occult can be contrasted with the supernatural power of almighty God.

Here are some wonderful Christmas albums to listen to over the next few weeks.

I did a search for the worst Christmas albums.

Brady

This review from Amazon.com states:

'This was the first album released by the Brady Bunch. Unfortunately, it was also their worst album. I could mention the dull arrangements of traditional Christmas carols here. But worse than that is the kids' singing. Marsha was the only one who could come close to carrying a tune at this point. To be fair to them, they worked hard and later became better singers. But at this point in their show biz careers, listening to them sing was unbearable. Greg's singing on "O Holy Night" is particularly painful. By the way, this album is only 20 minutes long, which is fortunate, because that's about all a sane person can take. This album has nothing to recommend about it. Sorry, Brady fans.'

Marsha (Maureen McCormick) actually has been a professional singer:

Maureen McCormick

I have to agree, Greg (Barry Williams) bit of singing on the 'O Holy Night' preview sounds less than sparking, to put it nicely. I would prefer hearing the Kool-Aid man say 'Oh Yea', and hopefully bust through the wall of the Brady's recording studio in the process, ending the session. A bit of 'O Holy Night' can be heard via the Amazon link above.

I have to admit, I have a very difficult time sitting through an entire episode of the Brady Bunch as it is just too corny, and that 'sucky' music that plays, even as a kid just rubbed me the wrong way. But the two made for theatre remake films were funny as spoofs. 'A Very Brady Christmas' is decent and I have watched it with my Mom previously.

Satirically, although I honestly do think Robert Reed was a fine actor, as I saw him in other shows, I do smirk a bit knowing he was playing this wholesome father figure while he was a homosexual.

Even if one is pro-homosexuality he/she can see my point if they have a reasonably open mind.

This strikes me as a classic example of how fact and reality can be so different from fiction. And yes, I realize this is often the case when it comes to drama and fiction.

Sadly, Mr. Reed died from issues related to HIV.

Robert Reed

Quote:

'Reed felt that his career required him to be secretive about his homosexuality.[4] Several of his male partners have since stated that he threatened them after sex, because he wanted his homosexuality to remain hidden.

Robert Reed died in 1992, at age 59, in Pasadena, California, from colon cancer; he was suffering from HIV at the time. He was cremated and his ashes are buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie, Illinois.'

I would really like to see a cure for HIV and so if there are some radical liberal types reading this article, relax, I am not glad for this disease or any other disease that within my theological approach, is a result of the fall of humanity and a somewhat corrupted physical universe within God's sovereignty.

I am making a legitimate theological and satirical point in regard to Robert Reed having played a wholesome family man on television, when the actual reality of his life was radically different.

Partridge

When I was a child my brother used to watch the Partridge Family which in my view was funnier than the Brady Bunch and a bit easier to stomach for thirty minutes. It would have been nice to have a drummer that actually appeared to be drumming to the songs though.

Death Row

I listened to a few of the preview tracks and I did not hear anything crude, but really this is a sad idea for a Christmas album. I do not post this to promote the album or because I think it is cool in any way. I think rather it shows that some of the dark humour is our Western society is just dark and not really humourous.

Recent comments on other blogs (because that is how I roll)

Graphic artist Jeff Jenkins at Thoughts and Theology in my links, fuels the battle between this blog and thekingpin68.

These are what I view as some of my better comments on other blogs, and so if your blog is not present it is because I did not write memorable comments in my opinion. It is not a reflection on you. I am not ‘dissing’ your blog by its absence!;) Blame me! So please, if you are upset, take some Pepto-dismal or something and take it easy, I still like you.;) I am being somewhat satirical of course!;) Thanks for reading. Concerning my views on music:

I personally prefer, within my tastes obviously, quite creative music, often on the technical side. Lyrics are a secondary issue to me, and I think it is debatable on how much influence good or bad lyrics have on persons with a set worldview. I do not doubt that lyrics can at times influence some persons that are less philosophically astute and more easily conditioned, and this would include some young people. My problem, as far a taste, with much of Christian music, not all, is that it is more worship than performance orientated, and so it does not personally impact me often, even if I am in theological agreement with the lyrics. And… I like the odd Christian song musically, but besides Rush (mainly 74-82), I like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Allan Holdsworth, later Beatles, and some classical. Basically I like progressive rock, jazz fusion, art rock and classical. Is gay the new black?:

Biblically it is natural to be black, but not natural to be homosexual. Blacks are not condemned for being such, but homosexual acts are condemned. Comments on scholars:

A scholar's bias can seriously undermine Biblical interpretation, especially when the scholar disbelieves in the supernatural and has a very liberal approach, and as well if a scholar is attempting (perhaps unknowingly) to read a theology, of any type, into the text there is going to be a bias fueled interpretation. Basically scholars are in trouble when they greatly lack objectivity. A discussion of sin:

A limited definition from me: Sin is a creation's thoughts/acts of disobedience against God. Sinful thoughts and acts are a sign of a sinful nature. Animals and heaven:

I personally doubt that animals have immaterial spirit's that go to Paradise/Abraham's bosom or Hades as do human beings (Luke 16), but I certainly think it possible that in a new heaven/new earth scenario (Revelation 21) animals could be present and precious pets resurrected. Would these animals be immortal or need to be energized for life now and then? I do not pretend to know. If there is plant life there is likely some cycle of death present in the new order, but I reason we could keep pets forever. And… Osterhaven explains that Biblically animals are considered to have a soul. Osterhaven. (1996: 1036). The most commonly used Greek word for soul ‘psuche’ psoo-khay according to Strong's Concordance. Strong (1986: 106). Osterhaven also notes that beasts as a principle of life are stated to have a spirit as well in Genesis 6:17 and 7:15. Osterhaven (1996: 1041). Strong is in agreement on the verses and the most common Old Testament word for breath or spirit ‘ruwach’ roo’-akh is used. Strong (1986: 142).

Theologically in Scripture animals are not described as communicating with God in a spiritual way, and therefore theologically the soul/spirit nature of animals is considered unable to spiritually communicate with God. The theological assumption can be made that the animal soul/spirit is limited to the temporal earthly realm and when an animal body dies, so does the soul. I lean toward this understanding.

Good points. Various church denominations stay divided at times over often legitimate doctrinal differences, but to judge others incorrectly who believe and trust in the Biblical Christ is dangerous. A failure to recognize the spiritual and theological value of those with various views within the body of Christ, even if for the sake of argument some are incorrect on points, is one of the reasons it is difficult to build up blog links as a Christian blogger, in my opinion. Multi-faith services:

A good point, and a reason I would not participate in a multi-faith service. And… One problem with a multi-faith service for me, there are many, would simply be that besides the fact we would not all be worshipping the same true God, if I was to lead prayer I would insist in praying in Jesus name. Some would not mind, but perhaps some would, but that is how I roll.;) War:

Romans 13 allows the state to maintain law and order, and so I reason this includes the potential use of military force. But in a fallen world, as we have it, even a just war would be a lesser of evils. And… Yes, my research at a Mennonite Bible school and later, taught me that turning the other cheek meant that one was not to seek personal vengeance as issuing justice would belong to the state. The issue of self-defence becomes more complex when a police officer or soldier is not there to protect one in the time of need. But, the law is still to be obeyed if at all reasonably possible I would reason, even in self-defence.

New thoughts on deism

I have described and discussed deism on thekingpin68 blog previously.

M.H. Macdonald writes that deism describes an unorthodox religious view expressed among readers in the first half of the seventeenth century, most notably Lord Herbert of Cherbury. Macdonald (1996: 304). Deism is from the Latin for deus in contrast to theos from the Greek. Macdonald (1999: 304). Deism is different than theism and is connected to natural religion that thinks religious knowledge is gained through reason and not revelation or church doctrines. Macdonald (1996: 304). There is a belief in a supreme being, but this being is not directly involved in the affairs of his creation. Macdonald (1996: 304). In agreement with Christianity, would be an understanding of God as first cause and the creator of universal laws. Macdonald (1996: 305). David Pailin defines deism as coming from the Latin word deus and parallels the Greek which is theos. Pailin (1999: 148).

In modern times deism is used to define a supreme being who is the ultimate source of reality, but does not intervene in the natural and historical processes through revelation or salvific acts. Pailin (1999: 148). Pailin writes that the common use of the term ‘theism’ does not carry the same negative implications. Pailin (1999: 148). He explains that historically deism is not so much a set of doctrines, but a movement, largely British, that became popular in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Pailin (1999: 148). Many within deism will have doubts concerning concepts of supernatural religious doctrines, revelation and the authority of the Bible. Pailin (1999: 148). Pailin notes that some within deism desire to replace Christianity with a more ‘reasonable’ faith, and for others it is an attempt to produce a more ‘reasonable’ version of Christianity. Pailin (1999: 149).

William J. Wainwright explains that deism understands true religion as natural, as opposed to supernatural religion. Wainwright (1996: 188). He writes that some self-styled Christian deists accept revelation although they argue that the content is the same as natural religion. Wainwright (1996: 188). Most deists reject revelation as fiction, but many reason that God has ordained that human happiness is possible through natural means that are universally available. Wainwright (1996: 188). Salvation therefore does not come via divine revelation. Wainwright (1996: 188).

My recent thoughts on deism relate to the following comment cited in my own words from Wainwright.

Most deists reject revelation as fiction, but many reason that God has ordained that human happiness is possible through natural means that are universally available. Wainwright (1996: 188).

Even if Christian revelation via the New Testament and Hebrew Bible is abandoned by a critic, it can still be reasoned that God existed prior to finite time and matter. God is infinite. Reasonably, all of God's attributes are infinite, and therefore God has unlimited life as eternal, unlimited power as omnipotent, unlimited knowledge as omniscient and unlimited goodness and is perfectly holy.

Now, I reason this rules out the notion of God being evil at all, even if one abandons the Bible. If God was both infinitely good and infinitely evil, this would make God a contradictory being, as evil would be contrary and opposite of good. I therefore conclude that whatever, if any, evil occurs is used by God for the greater good. This could be concluded philosophically, even without the use of Scripture.

Even abandoning the Biblical concept of sin, it seems as clear as day philosophically that all persons are morally corrupt and imperfect. Also, all persons eventually die and suffer prior to death. Under a deistic model where God does not reveal himself directly and provides no means of salvation, it seems reasonable and likely that human happiness at best is limited and would cease.

Why under a deistic system should one expect everlasting life from a God that has not revealed himself, and as the first cause has willingly allowed his creations to suffer and die?

His creations would not be worthy of being in his direct presence everlastingly, as even without a concept of sin, philosophically, human beings are corrupt and evil and God is not. Under deism there seems to be no way to close the gap between imperfect humanity and perfect God, and no very good evidence that God is interested in this concept.

If I was a deist, with what I know presently, I certainly would continue to seek God and ask for his best forever, but as I, like all persons are under the curse of suffering and death, I would see no solid philosophical reason within philosophical deism itself to expect anything other than eventual death, and would not have anything other than unsubstantiated hopes for a seemingly disinterested God to extend my life post-mortem.

In all this there is no very good answer to what many perceive as the problem of evil. Why under deism does the perfectly good and holy God create human beings and then abandon all of them in ultimate death?

Perhaps as with plant death for the sake of food and the environment, human suffering and death would and should be considered a good thing within a deistic concept. God would therefore not have a desire to provide any person with everlasting life.

However, within a Christian worldview the problem of evil is viewed as something willed and allowed by the infinite God for the greater good, with the atoning and resurrection work applied to believers within a culminated Kingdom of God as the ultimate remedy for humanity.

I seriously doubt a long lasting, everlasting happiness is available by natural means, and/or from God with a deistic approach.

Evil for evil?

Kazimierz, Poland (photo from trekearth.com)

Within the last month I have three new blog links named Larry...incredible.

If I become messed up with a Larry, please forgive me.

8To sum up, (A)all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, (B)brotherly, (C)kindhearted, and (D)humble in spirit;

9(E)not returning evil for evil or (F)insult for insult, but giving a (G)blessing instead; for (H)you were called for the very purpose that you might (I)inherit a blessing.

G.J. Polkinghorne explains that within the brotherhood of faith harsh words are to be answered in accordance with how Christ did it, with a blessing. Christians must speak and do right and be peaceable. Polkinghorne (1986: 1558).

Christians are not to return evil for evil to other Christians.

21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Leslie C. Allen writes that Paul urges Christians to not let pagan neighbours have cause for criticism of actions. A way to bring this about is non-retaliation by the Christian. Christians should not break the peace. Justice and vengeance belongs to God. Allen (1986: 1341-1342).

Christians are not to return evil for evil to non-Christians.

This is of course all easier said that done, admittedly.

This can be difficult to do even in the blogging world as well.

From:

TSN

"LONDON - Chelsea striker Didier Drogba was suspended for three matches on Tuesday for hurling a coin back into the crowd during a League Cup game against Burnley.

The incident happened in last Wednesday's game after Drogba had scored at Stamford Bridge and was celebrating the goal close to the visiting fans.

Some of the Burnley followers threw coins at the Ivory Coast striker and Drogba picked one up and threw it back. He was shown a yellow card for celebrating in front of the Burnley fans but the referee did not see the coin incident and the Football Association decided to charge him with violent conduct.

Police are also investigating the incident and have called on fans to identify who threw the coins..."

I can somewhat understand Drogba's actions. The thrown coins could have done slight to significant damage above his neck especially. Operating in my corrupted human nature (Romans 1-3) alone, apart from being filled by God's spirit, I would in that situation not just want to throw the coins back at the person or persons that threw them, but go back in the crowd and punish the offender or offenders with force.

But, there are security officers and police present at professional football matches and it would be their duty to apprehend offenders. The state and its representatives are established by God to maintain law and order (Romans 13) and a footballer, whether it would me, hypothetically, or Drogba, should have simply moved out of the line of fire of the coins and not attempted to return evil for evil.

By the way, with my door man build I would have never made it as a professional footballer.

As a soccer player I would be too much of a pylon, as in the orange plastic cone that does not move (much/fast).

I am quite good at three British computer soccer games I own from the 1990s though.

Too bad there are not professional leagues, perhaps I would be a 'supastaw'.

As well, I could certainly be a security or police officer at a football match!

There are legitimate situations for a person to use force in self-defence I reason, that being when an official of the state, or sufficient numbers of officials, that are involved in law enforcement are not present to assist and one is protecting self or others from bodily harm. However, besides the fact that Drogba was taking matters into his hands unecessarily, Drogba was not going to bring justice to the situation by throwing a coin back into the crowd as he would very likely hit the wrong person and not hit the right person, or persons that were guilty of throwing coins. His suspension is therefore merited, although I feel bad for him and reason the offender or offenders that threw the coins should be found, if at all possible, and banned from football/soccer stadiums for a very long time, if not life.

My Mom sent me this joke, and I fully realize that there are many intelligent blondes in this world.

"Subject: Ice Fishing

A blonde wanted to go ice fishing. She'd seen many books on the subject, and finally getting all the necessary tools together, she made for the ice.

After positioning her comfy footstool, she started to make a circular cut in the ice. Suddenly, from the sky, a voice boomed,

"THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."

Startled, the blonde moved further down the ice, poured a thermos of cappuccino, and began to cut yet another hole.

Again from the heavens the Voice bellowed,

"THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."

The blonde, now worried, moved away, clear down to the opposite end of the ice. She set up her stool once more and tried again to cut her hole. The voice came once more,

"THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."

She stopped, looked skyward, and said, "IS THAT YOU LORD?"

The voice replied, "NO, THIS IS THE MANAGER OF THE HOCKEY RINK""

Here is a joke that is both theological and satirical which I viewed in 2004:

On a British comedy television program in 2004, Jonathan Ross stated that a Muslim extremist suicide bomber was expecting to be taken to heaven where he would be rewarded with 72 virgins.

Instead he was given a 72 year old virgin.

A humourous soccer fall, and perhaps dive from a manager that leads to brawls in the stadium. In this example, better law and order needed to be maintained in my opinion.

Thoughts on media, cults, and printers

Scotland

I made these comments, which I have slightly edited, on another blog in comments, in regard to any government notion of fairness concept or doctrine within religious media.

As far as fairness goes, I remember a few years ago when a Christian television station came into our Vancouver area market. The station stated that for fairness the CTRC made them broadcast non-Christian programming.

Quote from their site:

"The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is an independent agency responsible for regulating Canada's broadcasting and telecommunications systems."

Now the liberal left that brings this fairness junk into Ottawa really irritate me.

1. Christian views are rarely in the media, other than mainly with Sunday morning televangelists and much of that is very questionable. A Christian station with a Christian voice should be acceptable in our society. Mind you, I would not be a bit surprised if a lot of it would end up corrupted even if it stayed all Christian, but that is another issue.

2. I am sure the Jewish community, or the Sikhs and many other religious groups could afford their own station, and I think they should have this right without any fairness concept.

3. Where is the fairness concept on the majority secular television stations? Oh, so fairness only applies to religious BUT NOT non-religious philosophy. That sounds oh so (Ottawa liberal) Canadian.

Religion requires faith, but secular humanism does not...untrue. Humanity does not even know its origins and puts faith in limited science philosophy to speculate philosophically. I am not writing in the context of known empirical scientific facts.

4. If there is ever any fairness concept on my blogs, it will be because I allow it and not because of some bureaucrats in Washington or Ottawa.

There is no need for government mandated fairness or balance in regard to worldviews and religious discussion and related.

A related joke my Mom sent me:

Subject: Fw: A computer whiz....

"A cowboy named Bud was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture in southern Alberta when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of a dust cloud towards him. The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, RayBan sunglasses and YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the cowboy, 'If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, Will you give me a calf?' Bud looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, 'Sure, Why not?' The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his Cingular RAZR V3 cell phone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg , Germany Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses an MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response. Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and finally turns to the cowboy and says, 'You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves.' 'That's right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves,' says Bud. He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on amused as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car. Then the Cowboy says to the young man, 'Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?' The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, 'Okay, why not?' 'You're an auditor for the Federal Government, says Bud. 'Wow! That's correct,' says the yuppie, 'but how did you guess that?' 'No guessing required.' answered the cowboy. 'You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You tried to show me how much smarter you are than me; and you don't know a thing about cows...this is a herd of SHEEP. . Now give me back my DOG."

The recent CNN report on Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple movement after it ended thirty years ago, had me thinking about this cult somewhat.

Rick Ross notes:

Rick Ross site

"The Rise and Fall of Jim Jones

November 16, 2002 By Rick Ross

On November 18, 1978, followers of Jim Jones shot and killed United States Congressman Leo J. Ryan and four others traveling with him on a fact finding trip to Guyana. Ryan was there to investigate complaints about the community called "Jonestown," which was largely inhabited by his former California constituents.

After murdering a United States congressman Jones knew the end of his rule was near. He ordered his entire following, some 914 people, to commit what he called "revolutionary suicide."

This included more than 200 children.

The rise

Jones began his group in San Francisco and was once a respected community leader. He started programs to help the elderly and poor. His circle of friends once included leading politicians, who once defended him against allegations of abuse.

An ongoing scandal about such abuse is what prompted Jones to isolate himself and his followers in Guyana, where the media, former members and families could not influence his faithful remnant. However, Rep. Ryan ultimately came there to investigate the continuing abuse within the compound.

Once the Rev. Jim Jones was a popular figure and something of a religious celebrity in San Francisco. He participated in fashionable charity events and perhaps most importantly could turn out the vote or do whatever else was necessary through the well-oiled machine composed largely of his church members.

Jones was not some self-proclaimed "prophet" or fringe religious leader. He was an ordained minister of the Disciples of Christ, a respected mainline denomination. At one point his congregation numbered 8,000. It was composed largely of poor African Americans.

Jones cast himself as a politically progressive and was embraced by liberal politicians such as U.S. Representatives Phillip and John Burton, Assemblyman Willie Brown and Mayor George Moscone.

After the tragedy at Jonestown these politicians found it difficult to explain how Jim Jones so easily took them in."

"Review of key events
1953: Jim Jones opens his own independent church in Indianapolis.
1964: the Disciples of Christ ordain Jones.
1965-71: Jones supposedly believes a nuclear holocaust is coming and uses this as an excuse to move his congregation to Northern California. His church grows and becomes prominent. He is named foreman of the Mendocino County grand jury.
1971: Peoples Temple buys a building in downtown San Francisco and spins off another branch in Los Angeles. Headquarters is moved to San Francisco.
1971-73: The Temple membership grows very large and it offers social programs, jobs and health care.
1974: Peoples Temple leases land from the government of Guyana in a remote jungle area.
1975: The temple turns out its followers for rallies political campaigns and helps elect candidates in San Francisco.
1976: Mayor George Moscone appoints Jones to the city's Housing Authority Commission. Jones gets favorable media coverage and national politicians seek him out. However, his megalomania and paranoia is becoming more visible. He never travels without bodyguards and packs public appearances with followers who applaud him.
Summer 1977: New West magazine publishes a story that exposes Jones, his fakery, abuses and questionable finances.
August 1977: Jones moves to Guyana and creates Jonestown.
1977-78: About 1,000 Temple members move to Jonestown.
June 1978: Temple defector Deborah Layton is interviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle and exposes the brutality and apparent plans for mass suicide at Jonestown.
Fall 1978: Relatives of Jonestown residents push for an official investigation.
November 7, 1978: Representative Leo Ryan says he will go to Jonestown and investigate.
November 17: Ryan arrives at Jonestown.
November 18: Some residents advise Ryan they want to leave Jonestown. Ryan tried to leave Guyana with the defectors, but is shot down at the airstrip by Jonestown gunmen. Ryan, NBC News staff Robert Brown and Don Harris, San Francisco Examiner photographer Greg Robinson and defector Patricia Parks are all murdered. Others hide in the jungle.
November 18: Jones orders his people to commit suicide by taking cyanide. Those who won't are killed. More than 200 children are murdered. 914 bodies are found at Jonestown, including Jim Jones.

Note: This article was largely based upon "Jones Captivated S.F.'s Liberal Elite San Francisco" Chronicle/November 12, 1998 By Michael Taylor "

On You Tube I watched and listened to some actual Jim Jones messages.

WARNING: I DO NOT WANT TO OFFEND ANYONE.:)

They contain some swearing and very gross imagery, and I suggest many of you do not listen to them.

But they are interesting to examine if one is into studying cults. I only listened to two complete clips.

Let the night roar

The You Tube header states:

"Audio recording of Comrade Jim Jones speaking at a crisis level meeting (White Night) of the communist People's Temple Agricultural Project in Guyana. "

Jones states in basic terms that they will kill anyone that tries to take any of them out.

It is chilling to listen to and he speaks and the crowd roars.

Now there is far worse. I listened to one clip (1 of 3) where Jones interviews cults members that describe in gruesome ways how they would like to kill and torture family members back home. Jones laughs repeatedly. His followers call Jones, 'Dad'.

Now, after hearing this I can still understand the media portraying the members of this cult as victims of Jones. They were and the children were especially, but these adults that wanted to kill and torture their family members back in the United States because they would not support the Peoples Temple intellectually, were very twisted persons and not only victims. My satirical side suggests that I am glad these adults moved to Guyana, but I feel especially sorry for the children that died and survived.

Some humour below...thanks Mom.

How to blow-up your blog without thinking too much

Okay, I need a break from all the Facebook and Blogger material concerning:

a) Obama nation

and/or

b) Obamanation

I have made my views known in the previous article, and I remain the non-conformist who will never run for office and would not be elected if I did, in all likelihood.

I do not claim to have hugely successful blogs, and so I do not approach this article with overconfidence or arrogance. At best, my blogs satire and theology and thekingpin68 are moderately successful, and that is largely thanks to my readers, commenters and links.

Thank you! Please read them often.

I have been blogging with thekingpin68 since 2004 and this blog since 2006. Here from my research are some satirical ways to blow-up your blog without thinking too much.

1. One of the most 'attractive' things to see when I go through Blogger's next blog option is dark theme headings and graphics featuring 666, Charles Manson, death metal, Chucky (no not my friend) demonic and occult material. That is it, give your new readers that very warm and cozy safe feeling right from the start. There is nothing like jolting the readers to get them coming back again and again. Better yet if you can have some death metal music blaring at a very high volume right from the start you will make a tremendous mental (metal) impact on your new readers. And of course always feature tons of blood, 'people love that'. I am sure these bloggers can find a 'wide range' of blog supporters. I would suggest that one look to prisons, insane asylums, and reform schools for blog links.

Revelation 20: 14-15

14Then (AW)death and Hades were thrown into (AX)the lake of fire This is the (AY)second death, the lake of fire.

15And if anyone's name was not found written in (AZ)the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

2. When someone leaves a comment on your blog, either completely ignore the comment, or better yet erase it later after it has been published. Make sure you come across to your readers with that 'What the hell do you want', type of attitude. Treat your blog commenters like they are telemarketers while your favourite television show is on.

3. Use plenty of ad hominem personal attacks in all your articles and comments. If someone disagrees with you make sure you state that they must hate you and what you stand for with your blog. Imply you are the Blogosphere's Mother Teresa/Gandhi/non-resistant Mennonite as you use vicious ad hominem attacks against your readers that disagree with you in any major way.

Reason that it is okay for you to viciously attack your critics, because you are 'right' and since they are 'wrong' as they disagree with you, and they obviously must hate you.

4. Put on your righteous blogger hat and decide which comments from commenters contain sufficient truth and only publish those. If you think a comment is truthful enough, publish, and if you do not, do not publish. After all, it is your blog and you have the right to have only comments that you agree with on your blog. That is what Canada (or your Western country) is all about, eh.

Matthew 22: 36-40

36"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?"

37And He said to him, " '(AC)YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'

38"This is the great and foremost commandment.

39"The second is like it, '(AD)YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'

40"(AE)On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."

Mark 12: 28-31

28(Q)One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and (R)recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, "What commandment is the foremost of all?"

29Jesus answered, "The foremost is, '(S)HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD;

30(T)AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.'

31"The second is this, '(U)YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is no other commandment greater than these."

5. Even if you are not famous and well-known in your field with plenty of blog traffic almost immediately, do not make comments on other blogs as even though you are relatively unknown in the field you are blogging in others should see what a brilliant and wonderful person you are. People should be able to find your blog via Google. I mean that is what Google is for, is it not?

6. Forget about linking reciprocally with other blogs and websites as eventually the blogosphere will come to find your blog and traffic will greatly increase as the truth will be revealed that you are a blogging 'supastaw'.

Supastaw that is what you aw.

In the meantime, writing that on-line personal diary is oh so much fun. It is like a notebook accept on-line with all those pretty bright colours.

7. Come across as a real know-it-all. Be so closed-minded and stuck to a certain use of terms that unless someone completely agrees with you and uses all the same terminology, imply they must be ignorant, and therefore if you do publish their comment, lecture them in a very condescending manner. Pretend they are your four year child that has just had a boo boo in the pants after being potty trained.

This has been published previously, but it needs to be published often I am afraid.

Douglas Walton explains that argumentation ad hominem is an argument against the man. It is a personal attack against an arguer to refute the argument. In the abusive form the character of the arguer is attacked. These arguments are often used to attack an opponent unfairly. Walton (1996: 374). Simon Blackburn notes that ad hominem is attempting to disprove what a person is stating by attacking the person, or less commonly by praising the person. Commonly it is a way of arguing forcefully or not, against a view without advancing the counter argument. Blackburn (1996: 24). This latter concept would be that of arguing against a held perspective without making any reasonable counter-arguments.

I once considered going into politics

Vancouver (photo from trekearth.com)

When I was a teenager I thought I might go into politics, perhaps as a Member of Parliament or more likely a political advisor. I am glad it never worked out, and that I never tried to work it out.

As I noted in thekingpin68 comments:

Liberal democrats often do not strike me as overly ideological philosophical politicians. In my mind, when liberal democrats do push forward an increasingly anti-God liberal agenda it is often not primarily overly philosophical, but because they are good at reading public mood and providing what will get them votes.

Many liberal democrats will likely primarily deny what I am stating, but I think the best of them are masters of political pragmatism and correctness. Some conservatives are quite pragmatic as well.

Biblical Christian theology on the other hand is not primarily concerned with pragmatism or telling the public how smart and good they are in order to receive votes.

As a theologian I am not primarily concerned with popularity and I am not looking for votes. Of course I would prefer to be liked, and I would like my theology blogs to be decently popular, but I am not looking to present blogs that appeal to the masses.

So many politicians indicate to the masses that the people are winners that need a break.

As a theologian I state that we are sinners that need grace (Ephesians 2: 8-10, Romans 6: 23).

So many politicians like to blame others for the problems of the masses, as in the corporations, the unions, the rich, the foreigners, and the other political party, and there is often some truth in these claims, but as a theologian I can state that we need to look at our own sin, first and foremost as the main problem. We are not righteous, we do not seek God, we do not do good (perfect goodness) (Romans 3). We are in need of God's grace through Christ.

Our new local Pitt River Bridge will have us ready for the late twentieth century.

The YouTube video clips were not formatting properly on Firefox, but were on Internet Explorer. So, because of the Firefox problem I present one as follows.

A jokester and scammers on-line

Sunset from space

Last night a young woman by the name of Rachel (I will be kind and exclude the last name) emailed me on Facebook and originally had viewed my photo and profile on the Are You Interested? application. She used very suggestive language in a bid to make fool of me, but I simply informed her that I had no interest in that nonsense and we actually ended up finishing the conservation on a semi-serious note.

Theologically, I showed Rachel Christian love instead of counter-attacking her with anger.

Rachel meant to make a fool of me and failed, but in the past scammers through Christian Cafe and especially Meet Christians.com have tried to scam me. There are dating websites where a young woman (also sometimes a man pretending to be gay, but I have not been contacted thankfully!) from Eastern Europe or Africa pretends to be interested romantically in a man and with the use of scripted letters tries to entice him to pay for her to fly over to his country. Once the money is sent she keeps it and is a no show, leaving that man alone and with less cash.

The scripted letters were clear evidence of scamming for me immediately. As well, the reply letters would not deal with my return letters in any major detail.

One woman told me she 'loved me' after three to four letters.

Below is one site that exposes the scammers:

Russian Scammers

The following is a summary of some of the suspected scammers who have emailed me.

In 2006, someone by the name Tufaina, formerly Rita Bush, both from a Gold Insurance email header, eventually apologized for her dishonesty, after she had sent me pictures of models that were not her, and so I removed her email addresses and the pictures she used from my blog. She stated:

Okay, sorry and thank you.Christianity is forgiveness. Previously from Gold Insurance=Tufaina=Rita Bush +Why all this sinful act of a christian brother, who told you am a scammer and why you put my picture in your web site and claimed that im scammer? please remove it and walk in the Lord. tufaina

Months earlier in 2005, she had emailed me using a different alias and with a photo of a different model. She had forgotten that she had contacted me previously! She had claimed to be a former Mrs. Miami and stated:

Jesus is God.How are u?pls this is my office account, kindly contact me with my personal.

She called herself Rita Bush and sent me through email magazine cut out photos of a blonde, who was obviously not the same person as the brunette, who Tufaina claimed to be in 2006.

She emailed the following in 2006 after I exposed her:

You hurt me and disgrace my personality,my friend saw my picture and told me about this, please for God sake take this out. What is my sins for you?do i take money from you or cheat you?you are the one that gave me your email address when we chat .Im not interesting in this again and pease take this out.Im a missionary and servant of God.

I noted:

Tufaina you have not cheated me out of money, because I have not sent you any. You have been dishonest with pictures of obviously two different women.

She stated:

You gave this to me in christian site and my heart is pumping blood for you act, please take this out for Christ sake.I never knew you are like this. You sent you pictures to me but if i do like you will you like it?God is seeing we all.

The following email was from Yana, who is in my estimation a Russian scammer. Yana, and I never had meaningful dialogue, and she did not deal directly with my letters, instead relying on a script.

hi My love.I did not receive your letter. I very strongly worry. Whether all at you is good. You were not ill. I suffer for you. I ask you calm of me, write to me the letter. Now it so is necessary for me your letter. I strongly love you also I wait from you for the letter. Always yours Yana.

She calls me Mark by mistake.

mark.Today on April, 1 day of jokes and laughter.Today I would like to congratulate you on this holiday.Tell and you mark this holiday at you in the country and as you do it to me it would be very interesting to know.I hope to hear more detailed story about it in the following letter. At us in Russia this day people play people, joke and have fun.I would would like that also you this day did not despond and would be pleased lives that in it has not taken place. I too would like to cry and much because of what problems. But I not such was necessary to smile and be pleased always lives that I successfully do. I know that 1 minute of laughter will replace one glass of sour cream, and you knew it tell to me.So be dared if you do not drink sour cream:)I wait from you for the letter and a good joke.Have remarkable day.Always yours Yana.

This was from sweet ol' Nadya, we have had no deep dialogue whatsoever, and she does not use my name.

I have offended you why you do not write me I wait for the answer. So your letters are interesting to me and suddenly they are not present I has thought that you have found another it so? If there is no that write to me at least two words or tell even hi! Nadya.

My reply:

Hello Nadya, I hope all is well. However, having received many letters from Eastern European women, I must say your letter reads like scammer script. So if you are not a scammer, please tell me specifically why I am so interesting. I post scammers on my website. Good luck.

Am I going to let scammers from Christian Cafe and Meet Christians, and a jokester from Facebook keep me from dialoguing with women on-line? No. I will likely never make more than a casual friend on-line and meeting a Ms. Right is a long shot. But, being on-line also allows me to promote my blogs and so it is worth the hassles to me.

I want to promote my theology blogs and interacting with strangers on-line is an aspect of that promotion.

Benny Hinn and Benny Hill

It is amazing how after spell checking that Blogger can mess up words in my final pasted copy such as occurred and occult!

I wrote an article on this same subject back over two years ago on this blog, but the very funny You Tube video has been pulled.

In my view, even in the New Testament era when Christ, certain disciples and Apostles healed people as part of their ministry, healing appeared to happen at certain times in order to demonstrate the power of God's future fulfilled Kingdom.

Let us remember that we can conclude reasonably for every person that was healed many more were not.

A problem I have with Hinn, Popoff, Angley and alike is that they seem to assume that if one has enough faith, God shall heal through their ministry, or provide a supernatural sign of sort. I believe that God can heal today, but more often than not people are suffering for a purpose other than showing God's divine healing. Healing is something everyone in Christ can look forward to at the resurrection, and I would be very willing to accept divine healing now, but my faith is not as important in the matter as God's sovereign will.

With the Hinn videos, I seriously doubt the nature of what is taking place as being from the Holy Spirit. Much of the shenanigans could be faked by Hinn and his employees. As far as the crowd/public is concerned, at the charismatic church I attended part-time in Manchester, England from 99-01, I did see some of these types of manifestations, including the shaking. Can I categorically state it was not the Holy Spirit? No. But I suggest that the monthly Sunday evening service that took place for young adults was an opportunity to whoop them up and build psychological expectations of supernatural manifestations and sure enough in some persons it occurred.

I reason Hinn and company use psychological tactics.

I believe the leadership at my church was very SINCERE in their seeking of the blessings of the Holy Spirit for the church. I need to make that clear.

I do not see a clear and relevant teaching the Holy Spirit is giving persons by having them lose control publicly in this fashion. I do know from some reading and listening on-line that like manifestations occur in the occult as well...something to ponder on. I do not claim to be an expert on the occult.

Writing articles such as this has had satire and theology placed on two lists of atheist blogs previously!

However, I am no atheist, but there is no replacement, including supernatural manifestations, for prayer, fellowship and study in the Christian life.

A supposed laughing guru. Can similar techniques be used to whoop up a 'Christian' crowd? I witnessed 'holy laughter' in London, England.

Mom, thanks for emailing me these pictures.

The good, the bad, and the satirical

The Party (1968)

The Party is a classic comedy, and the clips are quite funny.

Romans 8:28-31 (New American Standard Bible)

28And we know that [a]God causes (A)all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are (B)called according to His purpose.

29For those whom He (C)foreknew, He also (D)predestined to become (E)conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the (F)firstborn among many brethren;

30and these whom He (G)predestined, He also (H)called; and these whom He called, He also (I)justified; and these whom He justified, He also (J)glorified.

31(K)What then shall we say to these things? (L)If God is for us, who is against us?

I am assuming that the good that God works in my life will include my successful PhD thesis, once it is reviewed by an external examiner and I defend it in person.

That is, when my University can find someone...

As for career options as a professor, these are some (not all) of my geographical options as an English speaker:

The Good: I could stay in British Columbia and the Lower Mainland and likely live in this condominium for several years. Chucky and Bobby Buff live fairly close by and seemingly have no serious intentions of moving away anytime soon. My Mom is decently healthy and should not need more serious medical care for her disabilities for a few years.

The Bad: The Lower Mainland is pretty secular. One of the reasons I am not working on a PhD in Theology through a local institution is that there was not a PhD offered in this entire province when I was looking for a program. In fact there was not one offered in all of Western Canada! Now, fairly recently the Vancouver School of Theology offers a Wales, Lampeter PhD, and yes Wales, Lampeter is the University I have signed with. I am not affiliated with the Vancouver School although the affiliation they have with Wales, Lampeter allows me to use their library for free.

I may find it difficult to find a local University or college willing to hire a moderately conservative Christian theologian.

The Lower Mainland is also a very expensive place to live.

The Satirical: Will the last successful truly conservative politician in the Lower Mainland please turn out the lights.

Will there be conservative churches in the Lower Mainland in thirty years? Will I be doing communion and church in my basement? Will there be a court case over the next few decades where a Biblical Christian church and/or organization is condemned by the Provincial or Federal court for not holding to 'Christian' standards, that is, radical liberal church Christian standards.

I am not sure that Canada is much different than British Columbia, although Ontario and Quebec have much higher populations than does BC. The Prairie Provinces may offer me some work opportunities.

Ever year I buy this Football Annual which deals with the English Premier League, UEFA and FIFA.

The Good: I have British citizenship. I would very much like to live in the United Kingdom in the context of seeing more English Premiership football, and I would like to spend time with my friends there.

The Bad: As with BC, and much of Canada it may be difficult to find a place for a moderately conservative theologian to teach theology. Generally, the institutions are quite liberal in the UK. Like the Lower Mainland it is also a quite expensive place to live.

The Satirical: Some of the people there are very nice, but while I was there in Manchester I was bottled, and burgled twice. The NHS provides free health care but they messed up on both my nasal reconstruction and orthodontic work after I was bottled. The GP decided he would 'save me time and money' and so he attempted to straighten my broken nose twice by hand without anesthetic! Blood went all over my pants. 'I'm so sorry he stated'. When the surgeon here in the Lower Mainland (also from the UK) examined my nose he stated the British GP had made it much worse. He noted that 'my nose was almost at my ears'. My crowns had to be completely redone here as my gums were inflamed from the work that had been done in the UK. The crowns were too close to my gums.

After I was assaulted in Manchester, I went to a shop to buy a weapon for self-defence. I eventually bought one of those elongated sticks, which eventually broke back here in BC...cheap! The shop owner initially offered me a samurai sword. Perhaps I should go back there and see what he has to offer, if I move back to the UK!

As my good friend Robin, also from the UK, and now in Florida, has stated, it is difficult to get ahead financially in the UK.

The Good: I do not consider the United States a Christian nation, although it is traditionally Christianized. It is seemingly becoming more secular. There are probably more opportunities for employment as a moderately conservative theology professor there than anywhere else in the world.

The Bad: Unlike with Canada and the UK, I would not have citizenship.

The Satirical: Well Major League Soccer is not exactly major league soccer, is it? The sales job is present in the title of the league.

The Good: I have never been to the Southern Hemisphere and I have heard and read good things about both Australia and New Zealand.

The Bad: Are there many Christian Universities and colleges in these countries that would hire and moderately conservative Christian theologian? I would be a foreigner as I would be in the USA.

The Satirical: Hmm, I suppose these countries may be a little bit like the UK, but with a lot more sun, and a lot less rain, especially in Australia. I bet they do not have as many thugs there as the UK. What do you think, Russell? Sunburn could be a real issue.

If anyone via Blogger, Facebook, or just the web in general has any positive suggestions please leave a comment or send me an email.

And of course comments as usual are appreciated!

Good news, an idea:

I think that working in religious publishing is an option I will consider as well.

Talk about misfortune...

MINDEN, Nev. - Clint Malarchuk, the former NHL goalie best known for having his jugular vein slashed by a skate in a 1989 game with Buffalo, is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the chin with a rifle.

Malarchuk's wife Christy told sheriff's deputies that the .22-calibre rifle discharged after her husband placed the butt on the ground between his legs. He had been shooting rabbits.

The 47-year-old former player, now a goalie coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets, was flown by helicopter to a Reno hospital for treatment Tuesday.

"Our concern is with Clint and his well-being," the Blue Jackets said in a statement Thursday. "We are optimistic that he will have a full recovery very soon."

Do we bleed with greed?

Heiligenblut, Austria (photo from trekearth.com)

I am Canadian and do not vote in American elections. Therefore, I do not support either major political party. Even with all his faults, I have to admit Bill Clinton is both likable and intelligent. I am not an economist, but I tend to favour free market approaches with government regulation in order to monitor and to some extent regulate, but not control, the economy.

I can agree with Clinton that much of the current economic crisis relates to homeownership and people taking and receiving loans that they should not have taken and received.

Some of Bill Clinton's thoughts on financial issues from January:

bnet

OAKLAND - Homeowners teetering on the edge of foreclosure need immediate help - federal dollars funneled through local relief efforts - before a long-term fix to the mortgage crisis can be hammered out, former President Bill Clinton said Wednesday...

He noted:

These years have seen "a deliberate attempt to give people more mortgages on more attractive terms because we weren't achieving economic growth any other way," the two-term former president told a hand-picked group of community leaders, homeowners and campaign supporters Wednesday...

"This happened because everyone assumed the only stable part of our economy was home ownership," he said. But even veteran economists didn't seem to see interest rates would rise "if we kept borrowing money like a drunken sailor as a country." What has happened is "a systematic failing of the American economy and the way the mortgage market works," with homeowners - many of whom never missed a monthly payment until those payments suddenly ballooned out of control - taking the hit.

With the net cost to society for every foreclosure hovering somewhere around $250,000 - what with homeowners' losses, neighbors' lowered property values and other costs - "the dumbest thing we can do here is nothing The most expensive way to handle this problem is to let the foreclosures occur."

"We need to stop the bleeding here," he said.

My take on this is philosophical and theological, and not primarily economical.

I have been a student for several years and have accumulated student loan debt and credit card debt related to my academic studies. I would like to earn my PhD and become a professor and get out of debt. I hate being in debt, but with sleep apnea I have not been able to work full-time and work on full-time academic degrees simultaneously. I also have been working 20-30 hours a week at academic theological blogging in order to have recent teaching experience on my curriculum vitae/resume. This can be done on my own time, at strange hours, from home.

I would one day like to have a fairly large house with a large backyard. I would like to have a new car. However, with my present debt and the fact I have been a student for a long time, perhaps I will not be able to own a large house for a time. Perhaps because of debt I will have to live with less, until I can afford more. I may have to settle for renting an apartment or purchasing a small apartment, that is nice, but not my ideal.

It is likely that millions of people in the Western World are, to be blunt, just too materialistic. Perhaps they put too much emphasis on maximizing credit in order to purchase the most expensive home and car, among other things, possible. Financial problems could largely be avoided if persons would live within their means and have a manageable monthly mortgage payment, and a manageable car payment, or perhaps simply hold on to an older car that works fine for a longer period of time.

Philosophically, as a person in debt, I do not think that maximizing credit in order to maximize material possessions is worth it. It is risky and can lead to the type of foreclosure and economic problems we are currently experiencing in the Western World, notably the USA and UK.

A better and wiser approach is to live within one's means, and to live in a way that allows room for error, illness and disaster. If this means a smaller home, and older car, so be it. The peace of financial stability is worth it in my opinion.

Proverbs 22: 7

American King James Version
The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

American Standard Version
The rich ruleth over the poor; And the borrower is servant to the lender.

The Christian should pray that greed not be a major factor in financial decisions. I fully believe in bettering oneself, and that includes finacially, but debt should be manageable.
