Equal Rights/Deserved Versus Needed

Slovenia-Facebook

Part 1

Equal Rights

In regard to some recent major court decisions in the United States which are a major deal in the lives of evangelical Christians in the United States.

The results are not surprising and the societal, cultural trends have been going liberal, 'progressive' since as long as I could seriously ponder on those issues as a child in the 1980s.

There was never a point in the Western World or in the United States where this trend seemed reversing.

On the other blog, I recently stated views similar to what I will present on this post:

On Rights

In my mind, the same-sex marriage issue is a primarily a homosexual rights issue as opposed to an equal rights for all issue.

The homosexual lobby over the last several decades has become very powerful and has gained enough public and political support in the Western World to gain many of the same rights as heterosexual singles and couples, but in many regards equals rights are not gained for all couples in Western society.

Albert Mohler has stated likewise on his website, on his broadcast 'The Briefing'.

Polygamists still do not have equal rights in most Western jurisdictions to marry, I would reason.

Those who wish to commit adult incest, still do not have the right to marry, in most Western jurisdictions I would reason.

There is simply not complete open marriage rights for all adults in the Western World.

No, I do not support the practice of incest whatsoever, but neither do I based on Scripture and reason support homosexuality, Romans 1, 1 Corinthians 6.

Nor do I support polygamy based primarily on Genesis 1-3 and a Biblical appearance of natural order, admitting Genesis 1-3 although not mythology is religious history and is considered to be written in poetic, figurative literal language by many Genesis scholars, including conservatives.

I am not doubting the historicity of the fall story.

I reason in a democracy persons have the right within reason to live as they wish and God has established the Western World as democratic which I am thankful for.

I do not wish to force my Christianity or Christian views on a minority of persons, but will exercise my views, again within reason. I do not wish to attempt to force my view as a minority on the public non-Christian majority.

Basically, Western society in general has made mainly subjective alterations in views on homosexuality that have led to generally not well-thought out philosophical positions and so now Western societies no longer morally and legal discriminate against homosexuality in marriage the way they once did.

However, most Western governments still will practice forms of moral and legal discrimination against polygamy, and those that legally commit adult incest, for example.

Remember...

Those in the pro-homosexual marriage camp often use the argument that the no one, no government, no church, should prohibit two adults that love each other from being able to publicly get married.

But in reality, Western states are still allowing all types of moral and legal discrimination.

My conclusion is that a solution to this, a way to solve this problem is to allow, and/as in having the right to, every adult to marry every other adult on the planet.

In our context, perhaps just the Western World.

Perhaps one big ceremony online that would put the Moonies to shame.

Well, they already have been put to shame by their actions, but you know what I mean.

Google Images

This would be equal rights for all. This would eliminate all kinds of moral and legal, religious and government discrimination.

Sort of.

There would of course be several new problems created!

The End

Part 2

Deserved Versus Needed.

Philosophically I separate between the concepts of what for one may be deserved versus what is needed based on one's God-given nature, although from a Biblical perspective it is corrupted (Romans 1-3).

From secular perspectives when I listen to 'relationship coaches' online or read online job postings, materials are often presented in the context of the woman I deserve or the job I deserve.

I do not live life as if I deserve a younger woman because I have waited and trusted God, and still desire my own family.

I do not live life as if I deserve a woman my own age because that is the societal rules, or that is what many persons in the Christian Church will reason.

To me this is ignorance, as this view does not fit me at all.

What I deserve is very secondary, as I am saved by grace through faith in Christ unto good works Ephesians 2) and therefore the far more important issue is under the guidance of the Holy Spirit is what I need according to my nature to serve the Lord most effectively with relationships and with a career.

I reason my needs are to be with someone young enough to have a family with and to have a career based at least somewhat on my degrees but it is based primarily on God directing my nature and will through his nature and will and I would state much less so in the context of sinful humanity on what I may deserve.

This is a major philosophical difference between secular, Western worldviews and Christian, Reformed worldviews.

Man Of Steel (2013) Review

Sunset from space-Google Images

DC Entertainment
Just glancing at my posts on Blogger, the final DC 'Dark Knight' Batman film is one of my more read articles and therefore it would be worthwhile continuing with a review of DC films, even though I am in general more of a fan of the Marvel films, as in the Avengers related series, especially, Avengers and Iron Man I-III, but have never reviewed any of those films. I do like the Dark Knight series though.

So, yes I do listen to my readers.

Sort of...

I will further preface my review with some background information on my bias as in writing this review, as although I aim for objectivity, no one has complete objectivity.

I am not a regular comic book reader/graphic novel reader but have a small collection. Superman has never really interested me much because of DC comics insistence in making him too powerful relative to other characters and I also think his villains for the most part were never all that interesting. Even with the crossovers with Marvel Comics, the rules with Superman were followed.

With the films, the first the Superman series of four films were reasonably good, Superman (1978), Superman II (1980), Superman III (1983) and Super IV: The Quest For Peace (1987) although they lacked the computer technology and other modern studio film technology of the 2000s and 2010s that more closely duplicated action scenes from comic books and graphic novels.

The first Superman in 1978 did have an origin segment which was reasonable to expect, even though the character had been part of American, Western and much of world culture since the origin of the character in text in 1938.

I was annoyed to see an another origin film with Superman Returns (2006), a type of loosely based sequel to the previous four films with virtually all new cast members, nine-teen years later.

Besides having the origins told again, which I thought was unnecessary,  Lex Luthor was once again brought back as a main villain, for the fourth time and still in my mind not powerful enough to make a battle with Superman extremely interesting.

Often there is too much reliance on kryptonite.

And Superman ends up being a deadbeat Dad unaware that he was one at first in the 2006 Returns film.

So, when I saw the preview for Man Of Steel (2013) in the theatres, theaters for you Americans, I had a pretty negative attitude about seeing the film when for one I saw that it had a large origins component...once again.

Secondly,  it was borrowing much of the story line from Superman II by bringing back General Zod and his partners.

These makers of these films seem to treat viewers as if they have no historical  reference when in fact even younger viewers today with DVDs and computer technology have all kinds of technological references to older films from the 1980s and 1970s for example.

Even earlier in fact if some initiative in shown.

I find this disregard for historical reference in film and the need to rehash incredibly annoying and intellectually insulting.

You know, sometimes when I view something on film on television and I do not understand the reference I go and look it up on my laptop at a commercial break or when the program is over or I look it up on my cellphone while I am watching the program.

Hmm, I guess a younger person and by that I mean a non-adult, for example, could do that as well too, eh, film industry?

Imagine that? Having to reason things out...

IMDB

Quote

'A young itinerant worker is forced to confront his secret extraterrestrial heritage when Earth is invaded by members of his race.'

Interestingly with Man of Steel (2013) this takes place at the age of thirty-three which seemingly is a parallel to the age when Jesus Christ is viewed by many scholars to have been historically crucified.

Did I find this personally offensive?

No.

The film is a work of fiction. I have read and heard Superman portrayed as a Christ type before and in this film he is a type of saviour, savior for you Americans,  but I am not in any great measure comparing a fictional superhero, the Man Of Steel that is a lot more like Marvel's Iron Man than the historical, Biblical Jesus Christ, God and Man that is a product of our non-fictional reality within Christian theology, philosophy and faith.

Other points:

Due to modern technological advances as noted earlier, the film was superior demonstrating the superpowers of the heroes and villains in comparison to the films from the 1980s.

I thought there could have been a little more constructive dialogue and a fair amount less action, although what was done, was well-done.

It does not make reasonable sense, and the group agreed with me, that Krypton had the technology to send General Zod and villains away to safety and Kal-El away to safety and yet simply martyred themselves, making no attempts with their vast technologies to leave their dying planet.

Of course this is not so much a problem of the films but of the original comic book text and to change this in the film would be to change the original story, although it would be a more reasonable one.

Overall, despite my initial large negativity with the film I once again attempted to be open-minded and would state this is a good but not excellent film. It was certainly an improvement to Superman Returns (2006) because the action was better as in the story seemed more true to the text, and the villains although rehashed as was Lex Luther previously were reasonable matches for Superman.

In my view, the film is comparable in quality to Captain America or Thor in the Avengers series. But I do not rate it as high as the excellent Avengers or Iron Man I-III films. The European tour from Manchester. Another Kool version of grand finale at about the six minute mark. Will be seeing them in July.

Counter Quotations

Monte Carlo-trekeath
Monte Carlo-trekearth

Evil

You cannot have power for good without having power for evil too. Anonymous page 147.

Seems dualistic.

When I first began thinking about the problem of evil and the nature of God in 1997 at Trinity Western University, back in my Christian education days, I had this idea that God being infinite and eternal was also considered omnibenevolent.

This being the case if God was dualistic, God would also be infinite and omnimalavolent and therefore God would be a contradictory being and could not exist. As well, if God did exist dualistically, if even possible, any life God would create being something good should be instantly destroyed by God's equally very evil infinite nature. I still agree with this today.

Therefore, I do not think the quotation is true. Rather in our reality whether in a Biblical or Deistic one, and I hold to the Biblical one, an infinite God created finite beings that commit evil.

God

This only denied to God: the power to undo the past. Agathon page 192.

Biblically as God is infinite, omnipotent and sovereign he would not need to undo the past as it occurred according to his plans although admittedly much of it may have been in regard to finite creation in fallen reality, permissible will over perfect will that would have taken place in a perfect reality.

However with humanity there are many regrets.

My former pastor now sixty years old states that when you reach sixty years old you realize that you have many more regrets than when you were forty years old and so on.

The idea is to be to prayerfully wise with an open-mind in order to avoid regrets.

Reason

It's common for men to give pretend Reasons instead of one real one. Benjamin Franklin page 381.

Like the National Hockey League favouring Seattle over Quebec City for the relocation of the Phoenix franchise if Glendale council does not arrive at a new agreement with the new potential ownership group.

Questionable philosophical reasoning:

Seattle has never had an NHL franchise in the nearly one-hundred year history of the League.

According to a recent New York times article statistically based on web searches Seattle has 5% avid hockey fans compared to 6% in Phoenix and with a slightly larger population in the Seattle area, there are still more avid hockey fans in Phoenix. And yet, Seattle is assumed to be the better hockey market by many in the media and on the web. Phoenix, with the team in Glendale has a difficult arena deal.

New York Times

Seattle has an old outdated Key Arena which can be updated somewhat, but it was never built for hockey, but for basketball. The Seattle Supersonics left for Oklahoma because for one, the arena was outdated. The arena seats 11, 000 for hockey.

The Tacoma Dome is another local arena but is not a major league NHL style arena but could work as a temporary facility.

With no National Basketball Association club arriving anytime soon as the move of the Sacramento Kings to Seattle was blocked by the NBA recently, Seattle with the NBA as the lead tenant over the NHL in any arena has no actual NHL style arena being built.

In other words, there are plans but no arena being built likely until an NBA team is found first.

The assumption is made by many in the media and on the web that Seattle's proximity to Vancouver makes it a natural hockey market, but the New York Times article, although it grants Seattle a team because Greater Vancouver is not likely to get a second one, and just cultural common sense make this questionable. As someone from Greater Vancouver it would seem that football, basketball and baseball would all be before hockey in the Seattle area, and in Greater Vancouver hockey is the main sport.

Therefore, the cultures are vastly different.

All of a sudden this last week on Hockey Night in Canada it is leaked by the League that there are two potential owners for the Seattle NHL team and that would be where Phoenix would move if Glendale does not cooperate.

Meanwhile in Quebec City, according to the New York Times article, 48% of the persons are avid hockey fans with a much smaller population than Seattle or Phoenix with roughly twice the fan base of either area.

The city is fixing up the old arena, the Colisee to temporarily house an NHL team if relocated and is building a new state of the art, NHL style arena for 400 million.

The team to be owned by Canadian media giant Quebecor.

The League chooses Seattle, not officially but according to media leaks.

Supposedly because, it would not interfere with Western Conference realignment.

Reasonable, but in the larger picture, that could be fixed regardless of where the team was relocated.

Columbus for example could stay in the Western Conference, although probably not what the franchise wants.

Or the Conferences could just have odd numbers if Quebec was in the East.

Supposedly the League wants to at a later date collect a larger expansion fee from Quebec City.

Very questionable.

The League owns the Phoenix franchise. It could simply charge that fee now with any relocation.

The game will grow more by placing a club in a non-traditional hockey market.

Very questionable.

The New York Times academic, statistical article and other posts I have read, and my own philosophical deductions reason that the best potential markets for growth ironically are Southern Ontario, Montreal and Vancouver. Now admittedly, Montreal and Vancouver do not have other new NHL style arenas, but Southern Ontario does have a new one being build in Markham and Hamilton has shown as interest in having theirs updated but the League always resists a move there.

It is also very questionable that any existing team is the three per capita most lucrative hockey markets in Canada would be negatively financially impacted by a competitor that very likely would never become as lucrative, as in being as large of a business/franchise.

It is reasonable to deduce that more new fans will be found in areas where there is more media coverage and culture related to newer teams. That would be in traditional markets where the team is the most popular sport or close to it.

My conclusion is the League favours a move to Seattle over Quebec City because most of the teams and owners are American and they do not want another team moving to a 'foreign' country, that is Canada at this point. The last team to move was Atlanta to Winnipeg in 2011. They do want two franchise shifts in a row to a 'foreign' country. This regardless of the facts that the team would make more money in Quebec City than Seattle very likely, and even more in Hamilton certainly and perhaps eventually Markham certainly. Southern Ontario having a much larger population and fan base than anywhere in Canada. The most lucrative market in the world.

This is blatant anti-Canada.

I am not being anti-American at all here. The New York Islanders are moving from Long Island to Brooklyn in a few years and in my mind Brooklyn in an excellent new market, within an existing Greater New York market.

If this was Brooklyn versus Quebec City, I think it would be a toss up.

Related recent philosophical post from my other slightly more academic blog

Very funny, today during the 'Stunley Cup Finals' a story came out that the New Jersey Devils could not make an interest payment on their debt.

Now there are rumours that the team could move. Personally, I think that the three time Stanley Cup Champions are in a reasonably good market as the second or third team in Metropolitan New York. I would think Brooklyn will eventually be better being closer to Manhattan...

Someone 'loves', Mr. Bettman and the League to release the story right at the showcase of the League while the Phoenix debacle is already occurring.

Fatastic timing.

I wonder if it is someone from the United States or Canada that may agree with my views?

Hmmm....

Soccer Turban Ban?

The Norwalk Island, India-trekearth

Quebec City-trekearth

I have been working on a potential academic journal article from Chapter One of my Doctorate. I therefore as well as working out as usual, and my usual other work, thought presenting a light posting may be in order if I could find one. I then came across this 'winner', especially the YouTube videos...

From TSN

Quoted header:

'CSA SUSPENDS QUEBEC SOCCER FEDERATION OVER TURBAN BAN'

My first thought was...what another waste of time conflict over something stupid.

Quote:

'MONTREAL -- The Canadian Soccer Association has red carded a provincial association over its refusal to let turban-wearing children play, announcing the Quebec organization will be suspended until the ban is overturned. The national organization took a more aggressive stance Monday in the ongoing controversy surrounding the Quebec Soccer Federation's decision to restrict turban-wearing Sikhs from the pitch, saying its earlier efforts had failed to resolve the matter.'

What is the Quebec Soccer Federation afraid that Sikh children cannot head the ball properly?

Whether someone agrees with the turbans or Sikhism or not, turbans are not, from my understanding, going to effect children playing soccer/football and should be a non-issue.

As well, it does become a freedom of religion issue, as in freedom to practice a culturally established religion in everyday life without significant restriction and persecution.

Quote:

'The national organization said last week it expected the Quebec association to reverse the ban, which has drawn international news coverage and condemnation from several federal politicians.'

Quote:

'It has said it is concerned about safety and points out that the rules of the world governing body, FIFA, don't specifically allow turbans. Critics of the Quebec decision point out that FIFA's rules don't explicitly ban turbans, either.'

Quote:

'The CSA reports directly to the FIFA world body and is responsible for granting or revoking the membership of provincial federations. The World Sikh Organization of Canada has expressed its sadness over the decision to suspend the Quebec Soccer Federation, and has again urged the QSF to immediately lift its turban ban.'

Kooking Skills

Bermuda-trekearth

As with the word 'Kool'. The supposed idea is one is too 'lazy' to reach for the letter 'C' while typing. Also, perhaps there is some 'Kookiness' with reality cooking programs, although I admit I watch them at times with my Mother.

As noted I live upstairs in our strata condo complex and homecare for my Mother that is disabled and deaf. When I do head downstairs several times a day, I at times watch 'The Food Network' with her since that is what is often on the television. Most of the time it seems to be Guy Fieri and 'Diners, Dumpsters and Dives' repeating endlessly for hours and hours. Sorry that was 'Diners, Drive-ins and Dives'. I do admit that much of the food on that program, although not pretentious at all, does look first-rate as far as taste quality.

I have mentioned 'Chopped' on this blog previously, which is very well-produced. I have viewed several episodes.  However, for some reason whenever the lid is about to be removed on the 'Chopped' dish my satirical mind thinks of a potential satirical program called 'Chuck-ed' where once the lid is lifted there is a cellphone and a phone call from the fired contestants Mother...;)

I also noticed for the first time 'Food Network Star' on the Food Network, and they certainly look like a bunch of showoffs.

One guy looked like Mr.T.

'I pity the foo' that fires me'.

As far as my 'Kooking' or cooking skills are concerned I basically had none prior to moving to England 1999-2001, but as I have stated in person I refuse to eat c**p. I starred that out for you fundamentalist readers. I basically learned how to cook basic meat, fish, chicken and rice dishes, some frozen in the box. I placed much emphasis on buying food fresh from the butcher. I bought fresh fruit and vegetables everyday in large quantities for my meals.

My sleep apnea was not as bad at that point as when I returned home and the following years, but I did lose several pounds living in England. It was also living in Manchester where I began walking a lot and I continue that today. But I deduce that the food in Canada, and in North America is more fattening than in the United Kingdom. As soon as I moved back to Canada in 2001, by 2002 with the same amount of eating and exercise, one to two hours daily, I had regained the weight and my allergies and apnea became worse. On the positive side it forced me to be more vigorous and now with medical assistance and metabolism pills my weight is way down again permanently.

Homecaring, I am now further enhancing cooking skills, sort of, although admittedly I am not desiring to spend hours in the kitchen. Not going to happen. One of the things I really liked about French food, probably my favourite, which I really had for the first time since my childhood and our family trip to Scotland, Britain and Europe, is the sauces and enhanced flavours. I had French food again living in Manchester and going to the Continent.

Today I cook for example, chicken which years ago I was not as fond of, with much more flavouring. More often than not I am pleased with it.

Even a basic hamburger can be improved on.

As far as baking is concerned. I am a cookie monster.

But I will have to admit I will need someone to bake them for me and other baked goods and I will be the loving judge.

Sure I could learn, but eating the baked goods is more fun...

On a serious note, theologically and philosophically, I reason I am doing the right, good thing by at least having some reasonable domestic cooking skills, although this is not a major focus of my life. I am glad I enjoy what I make.  My Mother, for whom I am preparing many meals for is grading me higher as time goes by.  Although I do hold to basic Biblical, Scriptural roles, in proper researched context, I do not reason that these totally eliminate the need for common sense and reason within one's own culture and present day situation.

This is a moderate conservative position consistent with my other theology and philosophy.

I am a highly trained Theologian and Philosopher, still using my skills blogging, but at this point I am also homecaring and need to develop a certain limited yet significant amateur level of cooking ability and therefore this is theologically and philosophically reasonable.

The Mark Of The

The Mail Online January 3, 2013

Quote:

'A 19-year-old Iranian man could see an unusually hairy problem. A rare cyst on his right eyeball sprouted hairs - impairing his vision and causing him discomfort every time he blinked. The hairy eyeball was the result of a limbal dermoid - skin tissue that can sprout hair, cartilage, sweat glands and even teeth. Doctors had to surgically remove the tumor - which measured 5mm by 6mm - after it began to interfere with the patient's daily life. The New England Journal of Medicine reported the bizarre medical anomaly after it was submitted by doctors at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in Tabriz, Iran. 'He did not have pain, but the mass caused vision defects, mild discomfort on blinking, and the intermittent sensation of the presence of a foreign body,' the journal reported.'

'The biggest complication from limbal dermoids come from vision impairment. Because of the placement of the cyst on the eyeball, they warp a patient's vision and can prevent sharp, clear eyesight from developing.'

I thought I had problems with my right eye filled with vitreous floaters, which I did, followed by a vitrectomy, lens replacement and significantly improved vision. I now have very few fragments in the eyes.

Well, this seems like a very hairy situation to be in. Glad it seems solved...

'Google: Motorola's tattoos could replace passwords Motorola’s forthcoming phones could use electronic tattoos or pills to identify users, it has been announced.'

'The technology, which aims to remove the need to enter passwords and replace them simply with a phone being close to a user’s body, was one of the suggestions Dennis Woodside, Motorola’s chief executive, California's D11 conference yesterday. The tattoos have been developed by Massachusetts-based engineering firm MC10, and contain flexible electronic circuits that are attached to the wearer's skin using a rubber stamp.'

Two points:

One, although not primarily a moral or ethical objection to tattoos, within reason, I still am not subjectively, artistically, aesthetically interested in them, especially for myself, even if temporary.

I can agree some of the art is reasonably good. But I am more into a natural look, definitely and definitively.

Two, needless to state and blog commenter Uncle Chuckins balked at this suggestion as he did not even think of it when he read the article, the concept of 666, the mark of the beast, and the antichrist will be raised, especially by Christians, connecting the tattoo and mark with a potential mark of the beast.

Eschatology and Revelation are complex Biblical topics and there are debates and discussions among scholars in regards to varying degrees of preterist and futurist approaches. The preterist understands the Apocalypse from the first-century historical setting. Mounce (1990: 41). So many of the events are tied to the fall of the temple and Jerusalem in 70 AD and/or the fall of Rome 476 AD. Mounce (1990: 41).

The futurist, eschatological view tends to view Revelation 4:1 forward as being of future events. Mounce (1990: 41).

Mounce also noted the less followed, historical and also idealist/timeless/allegorical, views. Mounce (1990: 41-42). The historical seems rather tied to historical forecasting and subjectivity. The idealist view is strong in that it pays attention to the symbolic nature of Revelation, but is weak in that it denies historical fulfillment. Mounce (1990: 42).

Concerning the mark of the beast, Mounce states that it is not the name of the beast, or the number of the name that is stamped on his followers, the mark is the number of the name. He reasons John only intended his intimate associates to understand what it meant as even Irenaeus one hundred years later did not know the meaning. Mounce (1990: 264-265).

I would not have an electronic stamp placed on my body, or in my body, far more so because of personal and economic privacy concerns, and yes because I do not like 'tats', than because of fears of the mark of the beast.

However, that being stated, one cannot be sure exactly the nature of that Biblical mark.

Quote:

'Dog Bites Insurance Companies: Man’s Best Friend Behind One-Third of All Homeowner Claims'

'Over the last decade, the number of insurance claims related to dog bites has basically remained flat. But the amount of money paid out in claims has soared, and last year dog bites accounted for more than one-third of all dollars paid out in homeowners insurance liability claims. Data from the Insurance Information Institute (III) released in honor of something called National Dog Bite Prevention Week indicates that over the past decade, the number of dog bite claims has drifted from the low 14,000s to the high 16,000s. In 2012, the total stood at 16,459, down from the 2011 tally of 16,695, and also lower than the 2003′s total of 16,919. The low over the past decade occurred in 2005, when 14,295 dog bite claims were recorded.'

I love cats and dogs, but my old German-Shepherd Husky 'Rebel', his nickname was 'Jerkhead' and 'Jerk' because of his propensity to bust through fences, or jump over them, or dig under them. Once out and 'free' he would attack other male dogs, or attempt to mate with female dogs. He also chased cats, especially our cat 'Muffin'.

He was pretty good with people, however, Larry the landscaper, in the backyard working on the yard Rebel would later basically largely destroy, claimed that Rebel cornered him, growling trying to be macho one afternoon. I was just a kid and laughed at the entire notion. The dog at this point was a total goof.

However, this behaviour was later repeated with the sweet medical staff at the vet as Rebel/Jerk had to be knocked out like Mr. T of the A-Team when heading out on a plane.

Therefore, I can relate to the story...

No wonder Muffin hated him and took his shots when Jerk walked passed the Cadillac, the cat safely underneath.
