A hope versus a wish/hoping versus wishing
Greenwich, England (photo by trekearth.com)
In a Biblical context, Browning uses some of the following examples of hope. Old Testament prophets taught that any hope for a reasonable and good future depended on trusting in the God of the Hebrew Bible. Without it disaster and bad things would occur. In the New Testament there is a hope within the new covenant fulfilled through the atoning and resurrection work of Christ. Taking this concept, the Apostle Paul applies the work of Christ to believers and an eventual culminated Kingdom of God. Therefore as I Peter notes, persecution should be endured. Browning (1997: 176).
Tongue (Dr. Tongue?) states that Christ himself is the Christian hope. By his resurrection he provides this and the fact that regenerated Christians will also be resurrected. Tongue (1996: 532). Tongue explains that the word elpis had in New Testament Greek an expectation of something good or evil, and that the one that hope is placed in sometimes was called elpis, as in Christ with 1 Timothy 1: 1, for example. Tongue (1996: 532).
In Strong's, elpis is not the only word used for hope, there are several, but he defines elpis as to anticipate, usually with pleasure, expectation, confidence, faith, hope. Strong (1986: 34).
This one definition suits as a contrast to a concept of a wish or wishing.
I can hope philosophically and more importantly, Biblically that God exists. Christ exists and has applied the atoning and resurrection work to myself and others which can be understood within the historical evidence of his word. There is something real, objective, and concrete that I place my hope in…Christians place their hope in.
From The Concise Oxford Dictionary 1995, page 1608.
A wish is a desire or aspiration for happiness.
A demand to bring about what is wanted.
To express one's hopes.
A thing desired.

A wish can include hope.
So, I suppose one can wish for what is also reasonably hoped for in a concrete sense. I wish for my own resurrection which I also hope for in Christ. I wish for the resurrection of others and there is hope.
One can also wish for something that cannot be reasonably hoped for in a concrete sense. I wish to never physically age or die.
In philosophical terms a hope/hoping for something concrete is more beneficial than simply a wish/wishing for something.
Hope is ultimately more beneficial to a mere wish if God is reasonably shown as the ultimate source behind hope, whereas a particular wish is a human thing which God has willingly allowed to exist, but may not bring about, especially if it is not tied to reasonable hope.
Moving on from the argument, the more important things within Christian faith and philosophy are things of hope and not merely things that are just a wish.
In my life I am working through some issues. As in what things are in the wish/hope category (in Christ) and what things are simply a wish.

Christian Career Women and also Books on the Problem of
Evil
Some points within the main text:
I deduce Biblically a woman can rightly have a career and a wife/Mother can be a career woman...
In other words, I find a career woman worth considering partly because of her goals and dreams, if she is on the younger side or older side, within my age range, I am not going to do anything to work against her hopefully God-given goals, but will be fully supportive...
I am not go to work against what I find at least somewhat interesting in the woman in the first place...
There are also comments on traditional and egalitarian approaches.
I come out in support of a sovereignty approach in regard to the problem of evil.

'The difference between hope and a wish is that hope is more of a solid concept with
ReplyDeleteconcrete roots whereas a wish is something "out there" like pixie dust. I HOPE you
find true love that's my WISH for you!
-The Love Bug-'
Yes, as noted on the other blog, I mainly at this point want to meet some Christian women online and maybe in person in the future. I am in no rush for anything else due to the need for me to find a job and probably move. Plus I do not have my PhD on the wall as of yet.
ReplyDeleteIt has been nice to make some new Facebook friends recently.
Thanks, Big D.
I like the juxtaposition of "worldly" hope and "believing" hope that Paul brings out in Romans 4 with regard to Abraham's faith.
ReplyDeleteIn hope (believing hope) against hope (worldly hope) he believed....
Abraham believed God that what He said He would do He would actually do; so his "hope" was sure against a "hope" that can potentially be unrealized. As far as logic and biology were concerned, there is no way that Abraham would be a father with Sarah his wife. A "worldly" hope would be the potentially unrealized hope that Abraham and Sarah would have a child. But Biblical Hope is a sure hope that one day the hoped-for thing will be realized because God keeps His promises.
So Abraham (Biblically) hoped in the promise of God as a fact to be realized at a point in time against (secular) hope which is only a possibility in the potential of Sarah ever being able to give birth to his own child because by this time it was conceded that it was humanly impossible.
Biblical hope is sure because God never fails to keep His promises.
As for the difference between secular hope and secular wishing ...
Secular hope seems to hinge on a potentiality in a possibility that can be realize or unrealized whereas a wish has a more fantastical...I don't know... feel to it that seems to have as it's object something that lacks any sense of potentiality because of the utter impossibility or strong unlikelihood that it could ever come to pass.
And if you can understand what I'm trying to say in that last sentance, there's hope for you yet! :-)

ReplyDeleteThis is key. Thanks, my friend.:)
On the population map, I would have thought the U.S. should be larger and Russia smaller than they are.
ReplyDeleteInteresting how flat Canada is, we all live near the border for the most part.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Chucky.
ReplyDeleteIt is difficult to see but your Russia may be China.
Family Guy has its moments. I do not watch it but Bobby Buff shows me You Tube clips.
ReplyDeleteRush - 2112 (mixed with String Quartet) [Oracle - The Dream, Soliloquy and Grand Finale] HD 3/3
Now, I personally liked this mix of two different versions, one the original and one classical. But, I wonder what some others would think. I found it more difficult to hear the fast guitar solo at the end with the more instruments involved, but in general I like fusion.
If I was not into theology as a career, sound engineering would be something I would consider as I 'fiddle' with this occasionally.
I edit and make sound clips from CD and the web that go off when someone sends me an email, with artists such as Rush, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Holdsworth, Jethro Tull, Beatles, Brahms, Vivaldi, Grieg and others. Sometimes I mix the various material from different artists.;)

I hope that you will find a job that you truly enjoy Russ. I also hope that you will meet that special person for your life.

Thanks, Tammy. We can reasonably hope I will have my PhD soon.:)
ReplyDeleteDahn Yoga
ReplyDeleteOkay, this has made me laugh but also I think it is very questionable and spiritually dangerous where it takes people away from the Biblical God.
according to your map, I fall into the nutball group. O-well the world needs a few more nut balls. LOL, Rick b
ReplyDeleteI have often associated California with nutty people. Thanks my friend.
ReplyDeleteThe resurrection of Christ is foundational to a Christian's faith and hope, thanks for the reminder and for the encouraging remarks that "regenerated Christians will also be resurrected."
ReplyDelete-Heaven Bound-
What about this kind of Hope?
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'd rather have this type of Hope
Hope and not dope.
ReplyDeleteCheers.
Tongue (Dr. Tongue?) states that Christ himself is the Christian hope. By his resurrection he provides this and the fact that regenerated Christians will also be resurrected.
ReplyDeleteAmen! Tongue is certainly not a depressor.
And he is perhaps not very evil.
ReplyDelete"These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life." (1 John 5:13, NASB)
ReplyDeleteYour first two maps are funny.
That is hope.
ReplyDeleteCheers.:)
The "Dahn Yoga" video shows the founder with Al Gore. I wonder if all those 'brain vibrations' are the cause of all the horrible Global Warming that we are currently experiencing. Since that polar ice is going to melt in 5 years, maybe they should stop making so many brain vibrations, at least until this terrible heatwave ends.
ReplyDeleteDid Al Gore invent yoga?

No Sharia in Canada
ReplyDeleteStop Islamisation of Europe
ReplyDeleteThe Canada site states:
ReplyDelete'It has not been long since the victory against Sharia court in Ontario. It was the force of secularism that pushed back the Ministry of the Attorney General Michael Bryant to put an end to Sharia Court and all faith based arbitration in Ontario on “Feb 15, 2006”. But once this attempt of Islamists was defeated in Canada, They concentrated elsewhere and made their effort in England. Only a progressive political campaign can defeat this Islamic attempt which has so many implications and so many supports within state and parliament of England and political parties and in broad, including the support of many states such as regime of Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and others.'
Thanks, Jeff.
Good news: my apnea dental appliance is now permanently set to 12 mm, which means it duplicates the results of jaw surgery, minus 8 grand and 1 year with braces. I should continue to improve toward virtual cure.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your apnea dental appliance duplicating the results of jaw surgery, Russ! And saving 8 grand, plus not having to wear braces! That sounds like a blessing!
ReplyDeleteNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
ReplyDelete-Advice from a wise (and experienced) grandmother (who learned the hard way)
Jeff, that is much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Granny, you are wise.
ReplyDeleteCheers.
The UBC apnea doctor stated twice he could not believe how much I had the appliance open, prior to it being reset permanently Tuesday to 12 mm. I had it open 12 mm with the key and the metal roof of the appliance was scraping the inside of my mouth. I told the doctor that appliance was working properly at 12 mm and I was deadly serious about getting well. I figured 12 mm would work because a surgeon had told me many months ago that was how much he would move it forward with the post braces surgery. I just used some simple science. Too bad these doctors won't share files...
ReplyDeleteThe UBC guy was recommended to me via email from a MD in Dallas, Texas.

I am nobody. Nobody is perfect. Therefore, I am perfect.
ReplyDeleteJoe M.
The perfect no one special.;)
ReplyDeleteGood comments, my friend.
Thanks Russ,
ReplyDeletethat is an important distinction for Christians to make. Hope is not the same as a wish.
Heaven forbid some liberal church begins obfuscation by teaching that as theologically sound.
"The New United Methodist of Progressive Evangelical Bible" states,
"We have this wish (hope)"
Atheist already believe that is what we claim.
Well stated, Jim.
ReplyDeleteCheers.
