Would you swim in Devil's Pool?

Victoria Falls, of Zambia and Zimbabwe

Mr. Jeff Jenkins provided me with these interesting clips. Thanks, Jeff. He writes many good articles with helpful information on apologetics.

This is Jeff's blog from my links:

http://jeffjenkinsocala.blogspot.com/

The site is Devil's Pool in Victoria Falls, Zambia.

It appears this is a natural pool, and somehow when persons jump in the pool, they can manage to safely remain close to the edge of the pool without falling down Victoria Falls.

When I first saw the clips, I deduced that there were rocks preventing persons from falling from the Devil's Pool into the Victoria Falls.

According to:

http://www.hoax-slayer.com/devils-pool.shtml

Although certainly not for the faint of heart, swimming in the Devil's Pool is probably not as dangerous as it appears in the photographs. A natural rock ledge reduces the current and stops swimmers from being swept over the edge. As the email notes, the pool is only safe to use at times of the year when water levels are comparatively low. At other times when more water flows down the river, the ledge does not offer enough protection for swimmers and the pool is inaccessible.

According to:

http://www.ondmis.dk/punbb/viewtopic.php?pid=12104

The Victoria Falls is a waterfall situated in southern Africa between the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe. From September to December, due to low water levels, it is possible to swim at the edge of the falls in a naturally formed safe pool, accessed via Livingstone Island.

I would possibly with local guidance, take a dip in this Devil's Pool. With God's help, I will not dive into the Devil's pool of life. If something goes wrong in this Zambian Pool, one could die in Victoria Falls...a kind of classy way to die I suppose. But, if one is involved with the works of Satan, God shall punish, outside of the grace of God saving one from everlasting punishment. Jesus states in Luke 12: 4-5 that a person should not fear one who can kill the body, but fear God who can cast one into hell. I do not want to be the Devil's fool.

  1. Thanks for the link, Russ! You did a good job with it! Nice spiritual correlation as well.

  2. That elephant is just freaky. Scary. If I had not seen it, I would not believe it. That is just unnatural.

Actually, though, I guess that elephant is not so smart, after all. He didn't even sign his name!

Seriously, though, I would almost bet that painting could sell for millions of dollars.

  3. Cheers, Jeff.

I was looking for a visual shot of the elephant where one could actually see it painting, and not just the trunk. I thought perhaps there was some trickery occurring. Overall, it looks legitimate.

  4. I think it's legitimate. I just wonder how similar the elephant's paintings are. Is it creativity or just Skinner reward-response behaviour? Does the elephant ever "get a little crazy" as Bob Ross liked to say, and decide to paint a big ol' tree in the foreground?

I think is it reasonable to conclude the latter.

By the way, I am building up my Bob Ross DVD library at a greater pace than I built up my old VCR tape library. Thank you PBS.

    Cheers, Chucklins.

  6. Swimming in Devils Pool could be quite a thrilling experience for someone who is not faint hearted; but as I am a chicken, coward, or just plain too smart to attempt such a feat, this body will never know. You have correctly compared it to Satsn's pool (pond) which too may seem a thrilling experience, BUT BEWARE! Could be just another of Satan's tricks.

I watched the clip re the Elephant artist three times, and it is amazing. I believe it is legitmate. Elephants can be trained to do fantastic things with a mere touch or spoken word. The painting would appear exactly the same each time the elephant performs this talent. That is possibly what Chucky mentioned is Skinner reward-response behaviour. Perhaps the painting may be worth a tidy sum!

  7. I appreciate the comments.

PBS repeats so many of the Bob Ross episodes again and again, and since they seemingly do not want to use all of his approximately 300-400 episodes, they should use the elephant painter as filler.

Stick an afro on the elephant and call him Bob.

  8. Seen the elephant painting before, that is crazy. Really is impressive. As for swimming in the Devil's Pool, I don't know. I don't mind a little adventure, but I can be a bit of a wimp sometimes. And with the political situation in Zimbabwe right now, I'm not so sure I'd even want to be around Victoria Falls right now. Who knows how far the potential violence could spread.

  9. You make sense, Jake.

I would like to visit Africa one day, including Victoria Falls, but I would want to have a very professional guide.

    Russ:)

  10. Jumping into an eddy that close to that significant of a drop-off is not on my immediate "to do" list. I admit it looks like fun but..."

  11. Okay, um, HECK YES I WOULD DO THAT!!! Are you KIDDING ME? That has to be on the same adrenaline level as skydiving, at least. SO AWESOME. I want to go there right now.

  12. Yes, Kermit.

The Pool looks very fun, but risky.
I would perhaps jump in after my professional guide did.

    Cheers.

  13. Okay, David.

A group of us should save up money and travel to Victoria Falls. It would be very cool to see, even without a jump into the Pool.

    Cheers.

  14. I got sucked over a dam while swimming and I almost drowned, that was about 15 years ago, maybe 20, ever since then I decide to stay away from swimming. So my answer would be no. Rick b

  15. Wow, Rick, you could write an interesting story on that event.

I am glad you made it, and I can understand you avoiding water.

    Cheers.

    Hilarious, Russ!

Rick B...sucked over a dam?? Wow, I would stay away from swimming after that, as well! I've been caught in an undertow in the ocean (and flipped helplessly over and over underwater), as well as pulled away from shore by a strong current which, despite wearing flippers on my feet, was unable to fight directly (I had to swim at a 45 degree angle to the beach in order to get back to shore, because otherwise, the current just took me deeper and deeper out). I've also been in the water with sharks, barracuda and eels before. But going over a dam, I think, would be far more scary...and possibly more dangerous.

I've seen other animals (chimps, dolphins, etc.) paint, but NONE of them were able to paint anything even remotely CLOSE to that self-portrait that the elephant did! As far as having that level of apparent creativity, I would never guess that an elephant would possess that...and I still doubt it. And as far as some 'Skinner reward-response behavior,' I don't see how such a thing could even be taught to an elephant. He even saved the flower till last, as a sort of surprise, which would seem planned. And the fact that he stayed EXACTLY on the same lines when he went over some of them a second time...well, I just have no explanation for that. I am a Graphic Artist, and I'm not even sure I could paint an elephant that well, without looking at a photo, another drawing, or a live one as subject material. It's true that people like Joni Eareckson Tada can paint very well with their mouths, but she is a human being. Though you can teach concepts and steps, artistic talent can't be taught; not even to humans. What that elephant did was, IMO, more than just following learned steps. The precision and accuracy, as well as proportions, do not seem to me to be something that you can teach an animal. In other words, I'm at a loss at an explanation for it.
Then again, I've seen chimps communicate using sign language; and many pet owners would say that their dog, cat, etc. acts like a human. So, maybe animals are capable of more than some people give them credit for.

  17. Man, Jeff. First I read your emails about martial arts shenanigans and now you have equalled that in the water. You are almost as crazy as Jackie Chan...;)

  18. I would swim in the pool . . . with one end of repelling rope tied around my waist and the other end tied to the bumper of cement loader!

Oh, and I would wear orange floaties on my arms because they would give me even more of a false sense of security!

  19. Wade, a very good plan...safety first.

    Much appreciated.

    Russ;)

  20. You are almost as crazy as Jackie Chan...;)

Thanks, Russ, but I'm really not. Someone invited me to go parasailing one time, behind a car (instead of being pulled by a boat in the water), and I declined, because I don't how to land safely on asphalt at 60 mph. Yeah, you have a parachute, but I'm not highly skilled at landing a parachute in the middle of traffic. Now, Jackie Chan, on the other hand, wouldn't give it a second thought. He would parasail behind a speeding car at a moment's notice.

But on the other hand, we were fishing one time, and we saw two large fins in the water, only several feet from where we were fishing. People were yelling "Sharks!" By the shape of the fins, I didn't think they were sharks, so I jumped in with my snorkeling gear and swam close enough to see them underwater. I was right. They were both Tarpon, about 6 ft. long each.

I've only been in the water with sharks twice. The first time, I was snorkeling and going maybe 10-15 feet underwater and swimming along the bottom. I swam over a tire that was laying on the bottom, and a nurse shark, maybe 4 feet long, was curled up inside, asleep.
The other time, someone had caught and clubbed a 6 ft. hammerhead shark and thrown him back in the water. He wasn't dead, but he was stunned. I swam up to him and was going to touch him, just so I could say I touched a shark; but then I remembered how unpredictable sharks (especially hammerheads) are, so I decided not to touch him.

Years ago, we lived by a canal, and one day, we had a 5 ft. alligator at the end of our block. People were standing around the gator, talking...some just a couple feet from him (not too bright), and some even with their backs to him. Everyone wanted to see the gator. Someone tried to catch him with a boat oar, but the gator broke the oar in half with one swing of his tail. Finally, they called someone who lassoed the gator and tied the other end to a tree, and got the gator to run around a tree several times, essentially tying the gator to a tree. Someone finally came and took him away.

When laser tag was popular years ago, we played it in the Florida Everglades at night. Since you didn't want people to see you (or else they would shoot you with the laser), we didn't use flashlights. The trees in the swamp were very tall, and there was no moon out, so it was so dark that you couldn't even see your hand. You had to feel your way around so you didn't run into any trees. All around you could hear the sounds of gators crunching on things and making other noises. And of course, there were many snakes around, as well. That was pretty scary, playing in pitch blackness in the middle of the swamp.

Oh, and Wade's comment is hilarious!
