Non-exhaustive philosophical look at different types of sports fans and supporters, not to be confused with athletic supporters, but rather supporters of athletic clubs.
The Homers
This hardcore group of fans or type of fan seems to think that persons that live within a certain metropolitan area are philosophically, morally and ethically obligated to support the local team, no matter how good or bad the club is.
For some within the group it would be an evil and sinful to support an opposing team, and it would be better to support no team, than oppose the home team, even if it is a team that loses more than it wins or never wins championships.
These persons are often irritated in Canada as fans/supporters of the two remaining 1917 original National Hockey League clubs, the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs appear in uniforms and gear at the arenas of all Canadian teams.
For many in this group even if it means investing years and years via live games, television, internet and radio into losing with the perpetual hope that the team will win, just because it is the local team; the local team should be loved. That is the philosophy.

Local pride. That is the philosophy.
I do not have major philosophically issues with 'Homers'.
It is basically persons that like to enjoy the sport, the events and support the local team.
Winning, if it happens, is a bonus.
Winning, if it happens, is a bonus.
I do have philosophical disagreements with those 'Homers' that reason everyone that lives in their metropolitan area should think like them.
The Bandwagon Fans
The Bandwagon Fans
This may be a casual group of fans within a certain metropolitan area that usually support the local team when and if it starts winning.
It could also be hardcore supporters of other clubs that temporarily and/or tentatively offer allegiance to the local club.
Some within both groups may be quite critical of that same local club when it loses.
This group may often irritate the 'Homers'.
I do not have philosophical issues with 'The Bandwagon Fans'.
There is no obviously moral or ethical obligation to be a hardcore sports fan.
There is no moral or ethical obligation to support a team that loses more than its wins, or does not win championships.
Even if the local metropolitan club.
Even if the local metropolitan club.
As far as criticizing a team one does not regularly support, this is not philosophically wrong either, as the critique should be judged by its premise (s) and conclusion.
The Earn My Support Group
This group of supporters may crossover with those in the bandwagon group.
I am in this group, but I do not consider myself a bandwagon fan.
On Facebook, I am listed as a fan/supporter of Manchester United, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, Manchester City, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, all football clubs that have won championships, so they have earned my support.

I can hope that National Hockey League clubs in Canada, for example, start winning championships soon and therefore earn my support, but I am not a bandwagon fan by hoping they win.
Hoping a team wins a championship does not equate with, in my mind, publicly acknowledging oneself as a fan/supporter.
There is a lack of emotional and intellectual commitment, even at a bandwagon level.
I also support multiple teams. That would certainly upset some 'Homers'.
Hoping a club will win also of course does not equate with a strong emotional and intellectual commitment as a 'Homer' would have.

Personally, unlike the 'Homer', and I am not criticizing persons that desire to live this way, I am not interested in spending years of my life, emotionally and intellectually heavily invested into a sports club that is not seriously interested winning to the point of being a perpetual championship contender that wins championships.
Or if they are interested does not have the financial means or intelligence to do so.
Or if they are interested does not have the financial means or intelligence to do so.
Yes, I realize there is a salary cap in the NHL that does not exist in the UEFA and therefore the Canadian hockey clubs are somewhat restricted as far as being able to dominate the game in comparison to the football clubs I mentioned that dominate European and world soccer.
However, there is no excuse for the Toronto Maple Leafs, now reportedly worth around 1 billion US, by far the most valuable hockey franchise in the world, having not won the Stanley Cup since 1967.
The Vancouver Canucks, in reportedly the third best, per capita, hockey market in the world, also have no excuse for having not won the Stanley Cup having been in the league since 1970.
These are teams I would like to see win, but need to earn my support. Until then I am simply an observer, not a bandwagon fan and certainly in the case of the Canucks not a 'Homer'.
For the teams I actually I support, because the world of football is so large, and limited European football on Canadian television, I generally watch the UEFA Champions League as opposed to domestic leagues and I views the UEFA European Championships and FIFA World Cups every four years.
There can also be a crossover with the 'Homer' supporters and 'The Earn My Support Group'. These types of fans may publicly acknowledge themselves as fans/supporters but do, to a point, demand excellence from the local club. They will to a point, support the local club by buying tickets, watching games on television and following the team, but will be critical at times.
I am not in this crossover. As noted, I am not interested in supporting with my emotions and intellect an approach where I am not going to likely experience championships.

In light of the horrible Cleveland kidnappings and rapes here are postings in regard to surviving kidnapping...
ReplyDeleteBlade Forums
'Top 10 Countries for Kidnappings:
1. Mexico
2. Brazil
3. Colombia
4. Venezuela
5. Philippines
6. Nigeria
7. Chechnya/Russia
8. Afghanistan
9. Iraq
10. Haiti
--Since these countries don't usually do a good job of tracking crimes (especially ones that make their countries look bad!), this was compiled by Castle Rock Global, for the insurance industry.
Tips for Tourists:
- Remember that kidnappers are generally after locals with money, not tourists who might have foreign military connections. However, tourists can be victims too!
- Keep a low profile. Don't make yourself obvious by driving an expensive rental sports car and waving lots of cash around. Don't use a black limousine unless it's hardened and your driver trained.
- Women should avoid wearing expensive jewelry except in well-secured or known areas.
- Stay in or around the hotel, or don't go too local without knowing what that environment consists of for foreigners.
- Don't flag down cabs. Have your hotel or business office obtain a hired non-descript car or a taxi. Pay the drivers to wait for you, or if you'll be a while, call the hotel/office and ask for one to pick you up. Be sure you get the taxi number so you know it's the correct one you're climbing into!
- There's safety in numbers. Large groups are rarely at risk. Also, areas with lots of tourists are generally better policed.
- If kidnapped, stay alive. Statistically, you are a business transaction and an investment risk: it is in their interest to keep you alive and well. However, if you resist, you become an easily disposed bad asset.
- Maintain a good attitude, and be friendly to and with your captors: people who do so rarely get hurt. The psychology is interesting behind that observation, but a bit lengthy and speculative to summarize quickly.
- Family members should cooperate, but stalling is an effective strategy: most kidnappers settle for a tenth of their initial demands.
- Family members should work with US authorities, not local authorities. Often, local authorities are either in cahoots, or set up their own fake ransom drop, and thereby keep the money themselves! US authorities should only interface with local ones.
- Family members should continually insist of proof of life as well as assurances you are unharmed and well.'
I have noted previously that one should arm oneself within the limits of the law within one's own country. I would do this this in a foreign nation as well, especially and more so with an extended stay. Women of course need to be concerned about sexual predators as well.
Atmosphere
ReplyDelete'Above all, practice the buddy system. This is the most important rule to avoid a kidnapping and yet, many people ignore it. Statistically, individuals are the easiest targets for kidnappers.
If you simply must travel alone, then follow the safety guidelines below for traveling solo.
1. Inform others of your comings and goings. When traveling alone, leave a detailed itinerary of your overall trip with a trusted friend, relative, or colleague. Before heading off solo in-country, try to inform someone you trust with information about where you are going, who you might meet with, and when you expect to return.
2. Keep a low profile. There are many ways to avoid highlighting your attractiveness to a kidnapper, such as:
Downplaying your nationality, especially if you are a member of a high-risk group such as the French or Americans, who are the top targets for kidnapping in foreign countries according to an article at France24 News. The French in particular are becoming attractive targets due to several high ransoms reportedly paid to kidnappers over the past few years.
This seems like common sense, but avoid drawing unnecessary attention to yourself by dressing modestly, not wearing expensive jewelry, and not openly carrying valuable cameras or electronic equipment.
3. Watch your alcohol intake. The effects of alcohol can impair your judgment and make you less alert to your surroundings. Bars and restaurants frequented by expats are often watched closely by spotters looking for potential victims, who they know may be intoxicated when they leave the premises, especially late at night.
4. Carry a mobile phone. Do it. It’s just that simple.
5. Avoid public transportation. This is especially true for women traveling alone. Instead, hire a car and driver from a reputable source or use an official taxi service to get from point A to point B.
6. Vary your pattern-of-life. Avoid setting patterns. If possible, take different routes to frequently visited locations, don’t travel at the same time of day, eat at different cafes and restaurants, and consider changing hotels a few times during your trip.
While nothing can ever completely eliminate your risk of being kidnapped, there are ways to protect yourself against it. Check out the rest of AU’s blog for information about operating safely and security in the world’s most dangerous places, including tips for handling traffic accidents in conflict regions and avoiding trouble at checkpoints.'
I would add, arm oneself legally.
A former special operations officer I wrote to on this online told me that if possible, running was always the best option. I agree, but a problem with running is, and I know this from martial arts, especially if you are not a fast runner is that your back is turned to the aggressor (s) and you could be shot in the back and or have something thrown at you, or jumped, especially from a mob. Sometimes, especially if you are armed it is better to face off, but one has to be ready. Running is a better option if there is somewhere distinctly good to run to, to hide to get away from the aggressors.

ReplyDeleteTips Preventing Kidnapping by Steve Thibeault
ReplyDelete'Find alternative routes
If you think there is a threat, find other streets or highways you can use when driving from home to work and back. Kidnappers rely on your routine to track you down and then look for a time when you're most vulnerable to an attack.
Do not accept lifts offered by strangers
Once you get into a stranger's car, you are at their mercy. They could either incapacitate you or hold you hostage and you might not have an opportunity to defend yourself.
Do not leave your doors open
Kidnappers don't always snatch their victims off the streets. They can sometimes begin the attack right in your own home. To prevent kidnapping in your own property, close your doors and gates and install locks or alarms. The more secured you are inside, the more difficult you will be to abduct.
Let someone know where you are
If you must meet a new acquaintance, make sure someone knows where you're going and who you're meeting. Leave word with a family member or friend where you're headed and if possible, give the name of the person you're about to meet and other details you might know.
Meet them in a crowded place or somewhere other people can see you. Heavy human traffic is a major deterrent for kidnappers and may just save your life.
Tell your child to never talk to strangers
Train your children to avoid strangers, even if they seem friendly and offer gifts. If a stranger asks for help, tell your child to refuse and to call the attention of an adult immediately. If a gift is being offered, tell them not to accept anything.
Arm yourself with self-defense weapons
Other than a gun, there are weapons and gadgets you can carry with you that are very effective for preventing kidnapping. Pepper sprays, for example, are very effective for stopping an attacker and giving you sufficient time to incapacitate him/her and escape.
A stun gun is also a very important self-defense weapon to bring to help prevent a kidnapping. A stun gun is capable of bringing a sufficient bolt of electricity to shock an attacker, rendering him/her helpless for a few precious minutes so you have time to run away.'

Another new Google+ follower today, not that there has been 'a ton' but a significant amount on the other blog. Seems it was worth changing the other blog's account from Google/Blogger to Google+.
ReplyDeleteI hope the followers are merged soon. No point having two sets of Google followers on the Dr. RNM/kingpin blog.
If they do that then I will have to see what I could do about the Google/Blogger followers on this blog. Perhaps I would just change the account name slightly as that one is Russell Norman Murray, and therefore join Google+ with a second account. No not Rusty as some in 'Van' call me.
