Perhaps if the dive is missed by the referee within the game the player should be suspended for one game after a video review.
To be consistent this would require that red cards be given out for diving during the game. It would be tough punishment, but would largely solve the problem of these theatrics.
It is one of the great tragedies that so many footballers are shot during matches.
