The Christian and The Martial Arts

Yuanyang, China (trekearth.com)

February 25, 2012

I started at Karate-Kung Fu at a paid club at age of seventeen but after two years realized that Kata and much of what was being taught was not much practical good to me in the context of self-defence, a street fight, or against weapons. I was never interested at all in any of the spiritual aspects of the martial arts, so any hyper-fundamentalist at this point can take a chill pill. As well the club I joined divorced this from its practices.

So, having been provided some basic knowledge, I quit classes after two years and spent years with martial arts bag work and sparred with a few friends over the years to develop my skills. I did significantly improve. I also read on the martial arts and bought videos. I studied off of the internet. I realized that to avoid weapons defence training as an aspect of self-defence was unwise and so I trained with mock knives as part of sparring. In fact a friend was stabbed with a stick in the hand on one occasion... A minor wound. He told me this training may have saved him in a knife incident at work years later. There was evidence that I was improving over the years.

In Greater Manchester (1999-2001) in the beginning of my PhD studies I was burgled twice and I got myself out of a couple of potential fights by standing up to hoodlums, which are quite common in Northern England, sad to state. The first time I was burgled I was back home in BC, Canada for Christmas and all my electronic equipment was stolen. The second time, I wisely stored everything with a friend, accept for a couple things I forgot. At the location I was burgled the second time and where I lived where I was attacked, which I shall describe shortly, a neighbour was actually murdered. Apparently a person or person tied this man to a chair, beat him to death, took nothing and left the door of his flat wide open for all to see.

The rumour was that this man had been having affairs with underage girls which would be easy to believe from all the teen mothers that could be viewed in the area, but the grocers that knew the man stated he was clean and that the murder was for another reason, perhaps random reason. Anyway, Uncle Chuck and I were in Downtown Manchester, Decemeber 2000 and were attacked by three men that I later realized were part of a pack of approximately thirty men, some were drunk. I ended up fighting three and was winning the fights on points but due to my conservative approach, because I did not want to get stabbed by turning my back on one of them (assuming they could have knives or screwdrivers), did not go in harder to knock one of them out or at that time have the knowledge I do now concerning choking them out, or was as used to throwing someone to the ground as I would be now, and therefore in frustration to save face one of them called me a an 'f' er' and threw a bottle at me from a distance (as I had clocked him with a severe round house kick and punches and he had left) and it hit me in the nose breaking it and two of my front teeth.

This actually made my sleep apnea go from two stage (born with) to three stage. Thankfully this is quite a bit better with treatment and will never be that bad again. The lessons. The Karate/Kung Fu class only served me with basics. The bag work only served me with the basics. The best and more advanced martial arts work I have done is to take the basic physics of punching, kicking, choking, holds, and basic take downs, and to apply them to street fighting offence and defence, including weapons. This was done in the context of sparring as well. I would also strongly suggest that persons arm themselves within the rules of the law. I won the fights in Manchester on points, but I should have fought more offensively and attempted to take the three guys out and perhaps I would not have been bottled. But, even then I still could have faced thirty more men.

Sometimes the use of a weapon or weapons, within the rules of the law is the best answer for a reasonable chance of survival. I realize I have a fair amount of female readers and Blogger has mainly female members, and I would advise females to learn self-defence, and martial arts and to also arm themselves within the limits of the law. I am not sure if Art Martial has anything to do with this post.

My photo 1: These are the metal clubs I use at home to practice with and I also use these during sparring sessions. I also use a metal baseball bat, wood club and purchased legally a Swiss Army Knife that is used with the blade retracted for sparring purposes.

  3. So thats what Chuck looks like?
I love MMA and fighting, I'm all for self defense and now that I'm getting older I carry a police extending baton with me.

  4. Thank you, Rick.

Well-done on the baton my friend.

I am actually bigger and stronger than I was when I was younger, but also wiser, thank you Lord.

I carry items within the limits of the law with me.

I should also mention that potential dog bites is an issue as well (have been bitten once), while walking.

  5. Interesting history of your martial arts and real-life fighting experience, Dr. Murray! Actual street fights are possibly better experience than training in a martial arts school, I would think.

I took Judo for 3-5 months in 8th grade. I also practiced martial arts and boxing with friends and from books for many years, as well as practicing with nunchaku, bo staff, three-section staff, and other weapons on my own for years. When I was young, inspired by the original "Kung Fu" tv series with David Carradine, I would have my brothers throw long sharpened sticks (like spears) at me, and I would practice blocking them. After High School, I took private and semi-private lessons in Shuri-Ryu for about 1 1/2 years. I also took private lessons in a similar style (I forget the name now; it was Shorin-Ryu or something like that, I think) for about 2 weeks. In High School I was on the Wrestling team. Years later, I took Shotokan for about 1 1/2 years. Later I took Judo (a different place from where I took Judo years earlier) during the daytime, then went to a different school to learn Tae Kwon Do, during the evenings, for several months. Years later, I took private classes in Arnis (stick-fighting), tulisan (knife-fighting) and sagasa (kickboxing) from a Filipino instructor who used to be the head of some Jiu-Jitsu organization in Australia, who is the founder of tulisan, and who has a school called Bakbakan. Years later, I took classes again in Tae Kwon Do (a different school from previously) for a few months. I also took a beginning class in Fencing. Years later, I worked out in a boxing gym for months, receiving a little training temporarily, from a professional boxing coach. Then I took kickboxing classes from a world belt title holder in professional boxing and professional kickboxing, who had turned his garage into a boxing/kickboxing ring, where we would fight full-contact every class, and where I received many bruises and injuries, and limped home many times (but I learned more in that class than in any other class I took). I also took classes for a few days in Goju-Ryu, in Aikido, and one day in a Kung Fu class where we practiced with their version of a bo staff (I was invited to this special practice by a friend). I also attended a Bill "Superfoot" Wallace workshop one evening, where Bill Wallace showed us some pointers. Years later, I took classes in a Mixed Martial Arts school where they would teach different martial arts on different days and at different times; I took Kali, American boxing, Shoot Wrestling/Shoot boxing, Savate, and Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do. Years later, I took Soo Bahk Do for a few months. And I think that's about it. Twice I have been attacked by people with knives, and both times I was able to kick the knife out of their hand. Once I was attacked with the sharpened cut-off metal handle of an umbrella (without the umbrella part; only the handle), and I blocked that and did an eye strike.

Posted on Facebook, thank you. Well, Mr. Jenkins, I heard, I think it was on Talk Sport (might have been BBC) online that there are 50, 000 underage criminals in the United Kingdom and so there would be plenty of unwelcome opportunities for real fights. I was in more trouble in my two years there than I have been the rest of my life here.

Yes, I work on knife defences a lot in my workouts.

  7. I would love to learn a martial art, my brother used to do karate and I was jealous but when I went to a class I didn't get much out of it. I feel like maybe it would be best to teach myself. Having said that I am quite fortunate in that I've not gotten myself into any fights or ever really been in that position before. I've had people talk violently to me but they didn't have the backbone to follow through with their actions.

I'm sorry about your experience though (and the neighbourhood where your neightbour was murdered sounds scary). Being injured in a fight to the extent that it would affect your sleep apnea sounds horrific.

  8. As I understood, and Google translator you are talking about martial arts.
I was a little pleased as I was engaged a few years of karate, and reached in the sport of some success.
However I do not really like the combat sports, I prefer something quieter. For example running or aerobics.
But it was interesting to listen to this lecture, thank you!

Thank you Sarah. When I talk about women needing to look after themselves I would think not just the younger ones (like yourself), as likely all females are susceptible to assault on the street. I have thought to myself if Chucky and I were female, even during the brief time before someone could have called the police there could have been gang molestation or worse. This is why I needed to emphasize the reality of self-defence which would include weapons within the limits of the law of the land.

'I'm sorry about your experience though (and the neighbourhood where your neightbour was murdered sounds scary).'

Thank you, Sarah, it has been good to know you via blogging and you seem very kind. I am glad you have been safe, and I have toured London as I noted on your blog I believe and I realize it for example, has some parts that are much safer than parts of Manchester and would be safer to live in. Same could be said for places like Cambridge, Oxford, York and Durham I reason.

'Being injured in a fight to the extent that it would affect your sleep apnea sounds horrific.'

My nose wound was glued there, fair enough, it was quite small. But eventually an MD at Manchester pushed my nose in place by hand twice (blood poured out on my pants). When I came home to BC, my surgeon, also from England stated this had made my apnea much worse. BTW, that incident with the pushing my nose in place was with no anaesthetic and was done twice as noted and was without doubt the most physically painful few seconds ever for me! It hurt far worse than getting hit by the bottle. But, if it was so bad I would have passed out right? So, my nasal work had to be completely redone in Canada, as well I had my uvula and tonsils removed in a seperate previous operation for apnea. The dental work done in Manchester to fix my teeth and provide me with crowns also had to be redone in BC!

    Blessings, Sarah.

I also have no interest in martial arts as sport or in fighting as sport for me personally. I can watch it though. I do walk, and run a bit.
For me martial arts is exercise and preparation for life.

  15. Antidepressants are a popular treatment choice for those with moderate or severe depression. Although antidepressants may not cure depression, they can reduce your symptoms. The first antidepressant you try may work fine. But if it doesn't relieve your symptoms, or it causes side effects that bother you, you may need to try another.
But don't give up. A number of antidepressants are available, and chances are you'll be able to find one that works well for you.
    Finding the right antidepressant.

There are a number of antidepressants available that work in slightly different ways and have different side effects. Most work equally well to relieve depression, so choosing the right one generally involves subtle differences. When prescribing an antidepressant that's likely to work well for you, your doctor may consider

  16. Since I have taken the new two word verification off both of my blogs yesterday I have been barraged by bogus blog comments in the archives. On the positive side my pageview numbers will increase and my blogs are more comment friendly for the public and friends. I published for entertainment purposes the comment about depression that was an attempt by someone to be placed in the archives with links. Of course I deleted the links in the original comment.

  18. Hello everyone I am Sophie and Im 68 years and I am new to this website.

I only have one hobby and its books. Because of this my grandson gave me a kindle from amazon. This thingy made reading much easier as I do not have got to carry heavy books for example one of my favourites "Catching Fire".

Each time I read reading I just visit uhmm 1kindlebook.com to obtain some more. The finest point is that I can simply re-read the books. Its like my library.

I want to know about your hobbies.

I think it would be really, really neat to create a video game that fuses martial arts with computer soccer...

Perhaps some of the fans/spectators can be reading Kindle e-books.

  21. A week ago I was in a McDonald's parking lot with my Pastor, talking about various subjects until well after they turned off the parking lot lights and the employees all drove home (over 4 hours at night, until about 2:30 AM). He is an Arminian, which I disagree with him on, but he also says that Jesus worshiped the Father. He says that there are different Greek words for 'worship,' and also that prayer, etc. are forms of worship. What do you say, Dr. Murray? Did Jesus worship the Father?

    Never seen it.

I am thinking that one could eliminate yellow and red cards from computer football/soccer and make the players more durable and this would allow for more wild martial arts tactics as far as slide tackles. It could be a blast if done well. Actua Soccer 3 was (is) a little like this with fouls turned off and with aggressive tackles.

    Cheers, Jeff.

  23. From the recent 'Incarnation' post see Dr. Russell Norman Murray blog.
The red and white blog for those of you new readers, this is the blue and white blog. Yes intentional.

Erickson noted that orthodox, Biblical Christianity holds that Jesus had a human soul and divine one, yet was not two persons. In my mind this is a correct, yet difficult concept and Erickson admits that it is paradox. Jesus on the cross gave his spirit to the Father (John 19:30), so he possessed a human spirit and was fully human. My take is that in a sense there is one spirit that is a unity of both human and divine nature. It is one spirit that is a unity of two spirits, which do not mix yet work together as one place of personality. In the Incarnation, the divine nature of Christ was unified with a human spirit/nature. To say that Christ has two spirits or souls will perhaps lead some to the idea that Christ is two persons rather than one person with two natures. The human soul of Christ is unified with the divine soul of Christ, in such a way that the two natures do not mix, yet they work together as one spirit. Therefore when Christ died he did not give his spirits, but spirit. This one soul/spirit would allow Christ to be fully human, but without an active sinful nature.

    End.

    Jesus had a human mind.

Jesus had spiritual mind of deity.

Jesus as a human being would pray to and worship God the Father. It was also an example to those in Christ.

But I do not believe that the persons/distinctions of the Triune God/Trinity would worship each other. So, there is a distinction to be made. I do not think that God worships God in spiritual form in any scenario within the Trinity.

    Further:

So, now as Jesus is resurrected he is still the God-Man, this means there is still the possibility he still could worship the Father in glorified human form. Perhaps this shall be abandoned in the culminated Kingdom, perhaps it will remain as example.
