Rise of the Phoenix and LA LA land

Los Angeles

Thanks for reading. This will be a progressive post and this is part one this morning. Please check for more later.

Part One:

I am back from Irvine/Los Angeles. I am in Phoenix. Thanks so much Phil for driving me around, buying me lunch and helping me find the eye clinic and a hotel. I hope next time we shall have more time to associate. God bless.

Dr. Johnson destroyed all the floaters he could see and his laser could reach.

I recommend his services for those with floaters, especially large ones. Thank you Dr. Johnson.

I may pursue a vitrectomy in the future and appreciate very much the advice given to me by Dr. Johnson.

Dr. Johnson

Okay, here is some stereotypical LA LA land. I get on the plane from Phoenix to Los Angeles and my two seatmates are seemingly gay and share a few kisses. I see a blonde woman on the plane that dresses like she is 25 years old, but 25 years old in the 1980s. I think she was at least over 45 years old. I get to an office for an appointment and the receptionist is quite attractive and with breast enlargements. I have dinner and the people beside me are discussing scripts. The building next to my hotel was an office building and not a restaurant, but it had Taco Bell written on it. I reason after research it is the Taco Bell headquarters.

I can only remember eating at Taco Bell once in my life.

I like the Los Angeles area in general terms.

I have also been in three theology/philosophy discussions so far and have mentioned 'vicious regress' twice, which is a regress that does not solve its own problem such as a regress of gods or time (see thekingpin68 blog). Yea it is one of my 'pets' and I gathered much of it from a secular humanist. So you will have difficult time proving I am closed-minded. I live and learn. ;)

In my case, I would assume my blog post has not been read, but I try to get readers.;)

Part Two:

Tonight it was suggested by someone that the New Testament writers were not lying but the oral tradition of these writers was corrupted by exaggeration.

But they meant well, but Jesus was just a man.

My reply:

With thousands of New Testament manuscripts stating the same essential message, there is no evidence of a significant theological corruption from the original historically based message. This presentation took place through oral and then written tradition.

The New Testament martyrs would not seemingly sanely die for a lie unless it was because of a stance of trying to maintain the benefits of things such as money, sex and power. This could be the case with a cult that emphasized such, but Christianity did not. As they were persecuted and sometimes executed by the state, it would make far more sense for many of the Christian leaders to go back to Judaism or other, rather than live the difficult life of a New Testament Christian.

I remain unconvinced, and Christianity remains historically reasonable and not a work of fiction.

Part Three:

As with in 2002, the Phoenix area interests me with its many churches. I see quite a few Lutheran and LDS buildings. There seems to be a relatively strong religious presence, much stronger than in the Vancouver area. I reason that I could potentially move here and find a job teaching theology/philosophy of religion. If not in Arizona then with one of the other States not too far away, or in the South. My Mom now has American citizenship and I will see if this can assist me at all.

Well, today is another day of moving with and for my brother and then I will dress up in my black 'PhD viva' suit again and go to a business meeting with my brother and Mom tonight, once again.

A lot more ladies talk to me in the US than in Canada or the UK...hmmm. This has always been the case seems to me over the years.

By the way, when I come back to BC, I will post on Facebook and Blogger photos of me in my black suit...

I have also been watching a bit of BYU Television.:(

Part Four

I went on a four wheeler for the first time Saturday and rubbed up against a Cactus with my bare arm. Welcome to Arizona. I also got stuck for a short time with another machine (four wheeler) and was shown how to deal with it.

I would need quite a bit of practice to be good at that sport/hobby.

The theology discussions continue. I hope and pray I am doing well.

Part Five: Finale

I am leaving back for BC Wednesday. I have contacted four institutions so far in Arizona concerning work as a professor (Associate/Assistant). I am also willing to work in a surrounding or close state and so that would leave California, Nevada, Utah (Would that not be funny?), Colorado, New Mexico and Texas to consider if I wish to move reasonably close to my family and remain able to assist my Mom that will move down here also. Biola University was suggested to me by a local institution that had no work for me presently and seemingly liked my CV. My Mom, brother, sister-in-law and one niece have all urged me to try and relocate here.

I am not ruling out moving elsewhere, but I will start seeking in this area. I am willing to move away from family as I did in 1999-2001 and my brother and family can therefore take over assisting my Mom.

I can send out CVs in the Greater Vancouver are but here are my thoughts.

The western United States is far more Christianized than the Lower Mainland of BC. I reason there are more career opportunities by far for me in the western USA and the South, if need be.

To be blunt, I am single, and there would be more Christian women to meet here. God willing, I would like to have a family one day. I realize that being a full-time very serious PhD student has very much limited my social life in BC, but my PhD is almost done for good. One time a theologian/pastor spoke at our church and compared a roughly 2% Vancouver church attendance with a roughly 15% American one...telling. Even with the cults and questionable Christian churches it still leaves a lot more Christians here than in Greater Vancouver. I need to face reality. Having lived in the UK, I doubt there are many more Christians there than in Greater Vancouver in regard to average church attendance.

I invite my blogging friends to pass along any potential job opportunities in their area, for example. I also look forward to meeting with some of my blog links/commenters in person, at their church, for example.

I remain committed to visiting friends in the UK even though it is unlikely I will work there. This does not mean I will not apply there as after all, I do have a British passport and almost two earned UK theses degrees. There is also the good possibility of me teaching at two places, in other words relocating temporarily for a summer.

Anyway, these are my hopefully progressive thoughts. God please lead me in Christ.

Russ:) (PHX)

  1. Welcome to the US. :D I'm glad to see that you seem to have survived LA traffic okay.

Wow, you've only eaten at Taco Bell once in your life? You poor deprived Canadian...

Hope the rest of your trip goes well. Are you enjoying the warm weather in Phoenix?

  2. Russel,
It sounds like your experiences here in LA were interesting. Do you mind if I include some of them in the script I'm working on? If you need to reach me I'll be at the Starbucks from 11:00-3:30 everyday working on my Apple laptop.

  3. Russ, I think you are one of the many examples of people from Canada and other countries that come to the U.S. for medical operations. However, after the over-2000-page medical bill is passed here (which almost no one will read, being so long), and we adopt Socialism, it may be that no one from outside the U.S., including Canadians, will ever see any advantage in coming to the U.S. for medical procedures anymore. That's my guess, anyway.

Thanks, Abbey. The traffic was okay.:) It is a nice area, especially Irvine.

True, I need to visit all those wonderful fast food places in America that are rare or non-existent in Canada.;)

'Hope the rest of your trip goes well. Are you enjoying the warm weather in Phoenix?'

Cheers, Ms. Travers. The weather here is like Spring in Maple Ridge/Vancouver.

Well, Abbey, I was just helping my brother move house for my holiday. I was using my macho muscles for the greater good.;)

  6. Good point, Jeff.

Well, so far Dr. Geller (Fort Myers, Florida, 2007) and Dr. Johnson (Irvine, California, 2009) have demonstrated to me a depth of knowledge and good care.

It has been an eye opener.

I saw (again) the 1993 movie, "Demolition Man" last night (Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock), and, as you probably remember, in that movie, Taco Bell is the last and only remaining restaurant. Certainly a future I would not want to see.

It has been an eye opener.

  12. Glad to hear you seem to be enjoying the US okay - if no other reason than liking the warm, dry weather of Phoenix. I just flew through there a couple weeks ago. It was crazy because I was still all bundled up from leaving cold Denver. I got there and it was 90 degrees F, and people were in shorts. Ahh, pure bliss.

American "ladies" just know a good thinker when they see one - that's why they're talking to you. :P Or maybe it's the fact that Americans are known for randomly telling their life story to any stranger they happen to come across (especially when they have a foreign accent). Just teasing... :)

  13. Needless to state, meeting friendly ladies is a consideration in moving to the USA. Especially potentially Christian ones.

Well, Abbey, I wore my suit for the third time ever tonight and there is already a hole in the side of the pants.

I still have a major floater problem and will pursue a vitrectomy back in Vancouver. I also wish to have a lens replacement one day in order to improve the vision in that eye. This lens information was not freely offered by my Canadian doctors but was mentioned first by the surgeon in Fort Myers, Florida.

The surgeon in Irvine also mentioned both surgeries. The UBC surgeons seem willing to do the vitrectomy but not the lens replacement. However, should the vitrectomy cause a cataract (40%-50% chance), I will need the lens replacement surgery.

Another website says this about it:

"CHIP is the program that has allowed poor working parents to bypass the increasingly amoral and dysfunctional insurance system and get affordable healthcare for their children, like every child gets in Canada.

Cutting CHIP represents a betrayal of many working parents

    The House bill:

    * Mandates that parents and nonparents buy private insurance plans. None are required to provide equal benefits to CHIP. Benefits will be nothing like CHIP. They will only pay a portion of costs, many will only pay above arbitrarily high deductibles, thousands of dollars.
    * Moves most poor children into commercial insurance plans of uncertain quality.
    * Deal to preserve CHIP until 2019 cancelled
    * Despite costing $15 billion more to pay for 65% of the children's costs with private insurance, according to the Congressional Budget Office, the bill will be chopped.
    * Private unsurance is designed to prevent care so many defer care worried about starvation or lack of money to pay for rent or food.
    * it (Obama's free market "solution" to chop CHIP) represents an uncertain, risky situation for children. Parents will delay or not allow their children to get care if they risk homelessness for going to the doctor because they must pay up to 35% of the often unpredictable costs.
    * A recent study showed that thousands of children die because of the uniquely American system of withholding care from the poor.
    * CHIP appars to meet the criteria of being "too attractive" and so its banned.

From the Charleston West Virginia Gazette

"If the children were moved to private insurance, their parents would also pay significantly more in premiums and out-of-pocket expense, according to an actuarial study by financial consulting firm Watson Wyatt Worldwide. Using data from 17 states, researchers found that, at 175 to 225 percent of poverty, parents of CHIP children paid up to 2 percent of their child's treatment. If the same children were transferred to private plans, their parents would pay between 5 and 35 percent of the cost of care.

"Most of these parents are working people who are counting dollars," said Renate Pore, health care analyst for the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy. Families eligible for CHIP make too much to be eligible for Medicaid, but not enough to afford private insurance, she said. "CHIP is the stronger coverage package, and we are very concerned about the idea that those kids would be moved over without some protection," said Bruce Lesley, director of First Focus, the national child advocacy group that commissioned the actuarial study.

The CHIP program includes developmental screening and preventative care that is not covered by most adult plans. It covers a wide range of services, including doctor and hospital visits, immunizations and prescriptions, tests and X-rays, diabetic care, and dental and vision care. It provides case management for children with special needs.
"There are many wonderful parts of the reform legislation, and many things in health care that need to be changed," Lesley said, "but this is one that should be left alone."

  21. Sherry,

I always love reading Jeff's comments

    Thank you!

hey Jeff what do u think about the chip that is included in the new medical bill

OK, now you've got me going. I will have to make a few comments now.

First, I assume you are referring to the following:

"In February 2009 the President signed the State Children's Health Insurance Reauthorization Act to renew the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and to expand the program's coverage from seven million to 11 million children and pregnant women. CHIP provides matching funds to states to provide medical insurance. The costs that are covered by CHIP vary by state but some of these expenses include doctor visits, prescription medicines, dental costs, and hospitalization of children. Tax monies pays for these federal and state sponsored programs and families might have to pay a small cost for services depending on their income."
    from:
    http://www.ehow.com/about_5649075_government-medical-bills-children.html

And, this article from this month updates that information:

"The $894 billion health reform bill working its way toward a House vote this week would repeal the Children's Health Insurance Program, shifting some low-income kids into Medicaid and others into private plans that would both cost more and guarantee fewer benefits," The Washington Independent reports. "Which program the youngsters tumble into hinges, not on need, but on the state where they live - a design some advocates call 'the lottery of geography.'"

Under CHIP, which was designed to cover kids in families that earn too much to qualify for Medicaid, states "were granted broad discretion to fashion the program to fit their needs, with some carving out a separate CHIP program, some using CHIP funds to expand Medicaid eligibility, and still others opting for some combination of the two." The House bill handles the two models differently. "While it expands Medicaid eligibility to 150 percent of poverty and shifts all kids living above that level to private plans contained on a proposed insurance marketplace, or exchange, the proposal also carves out an exception in states which augmented Medicaid in lieu of creating a separate CHIP program. In those cases, the youngsters would remain in Medicaid. The distinction carries both coverage and cost implications."

  24. Speaking of the Health Bill, check this out:

Letter from a Doctor to Indiana Senator Bayh about the Health Care Bill Highlighting Content by Paragraph

    Courtsey: Paul R. Green Jr.

By: Dr. Stephen E. Frazer, MD (anesthesiologist)

"You'd better pray for perfect health the rest of your life!

Here is a letter I sent to Senator Bayh. Feel free to copy it and send it around to all other representatives. -- Stephen Fraser

    Senator Bayh,

As a practicing physician I have major concerns with the health care bill before Congress. I actually have read the bill and am shocked by the brazenness of the government's proposed involvement in the patient-physician relationship. The very idea that the government will dictate and ration patient care is dangerous and certainly not helpful in designing a health care system that works for all. Every physician I work with agrees that we need to fix our health care system, but the proposed bills currently making their way through congress will be a disaster if passed.

I ask you respectfully and as a patriotic American to look at the following troubling lines that I have read in the bill. You cannot possibly believe that these proposals are in the best interests of the country and our fellow citizens.

Page 22 of the HC Bill: Mandates that the Govt will audit books of all employers that self-insure!

Page 30 Sec 123 of HC bill: THERE WILL BE A GOVT COMMITTEE that decides what treatments/benefits you get.

  25. And speaking of chips:

There has been talk for many years now of a microchip implanted under the skin to replace monetary currency. One advantage to this, some have said, would be that you could not be robbed or pick-pocketed. Such a microchip could theoretically contain all the data on that person. There are already microchip implants for your pet, in case they get lost. There are even biological computers. For example, a computer made of neurons taken from leeches has been created by US scientists. And they can implant devices that are mainly used for tasks like monitoring the body's activities or inducing therapeutic effects, all at the molecular or cellular level. Some day soon, they even hope to have biological computers that can be implanted or even built within a patient's own cells. These biological computers will act as bio-sensors, watching out for any origin of disease. Should the bio-computers find such toxins, the molecular logic circuits within the computer could chose the most appropriate action. In case of cancer, this action could be to induce programmed cell death. If the disease was not life threatening, a specific therapeutic drug could be induced to bring the cell back to health. A microchip implanted under the skin, or a biological computer inside a person, would seem to have many advantages within a one-world government. They could monitor everything about you.

    Microchip video

Watch this video. Computer chips have already been implanted under the skin of some people.

  29. I may have missed something. Why did you have to go to the States to get your floaters removed, or was that something you did while you were in the States?
I used to go to Taco Bell alot when I was younger and before I went to the West Coast for the first time. Since the Latino population is very large in LA, it really makes no sense to even go to a Taco Bell when there's a plethora of much better-tasting and authentic Mexican cuisine out there all over the place.
Women with fake breasts? Typical LA. The hot women there come from the Midwest and other parts of the US, and are all working as waitresses and cashiers, hoping to be discovered. Gotta love LA. Phoenix too.

  30. 'I may have missed something. Why did you have to go to the States to get your floaters removed, or was that something you did while you were in the States?'

    Thanks, Daij.

Yes, I discussed the topic previously on satire and theology and thekingpin68.

Only three laser surgeons (apparently) deal with floaters full-time in the world. They are all in the USA and I have visited two of them. The laser cannot reach the floaters in the very back of my eye. So, I will have the vitreous jell removed and replaced with artificial back in BC.

'I used to go to Taco Bell alot when I was younger and before I went to the West Coast for the first time. Since the Latino population is very large in LA, it really makes no sense to even go to a Taco Bell when there's a plethora of much better-tasting and authentic Mexican cuisine out there all over the place.'

    Good point.

    'Women with fake breasts?'

Just so all you ladies know...not a priority for me at all!

'Typical LA. The hot women there come from the Midwest and other parts of the US, and are all working as waitresses and cashiers, hoping to be discovered. Gotta love LA. Phoenix too.''

    Another good point.

  31. 'My comments are all out of order! Instead of 1,2,3,4,5,6, they are placed as 6,5,1,3,4,2.

I guess I should expect that on a satire site.'

    Thanks, Blogger!

Feel free to repost my friend. My comments were not publishing properly last night either for a time.

  33. Evil Cactus...nice lady Tammy.:)

Yes, I will try and avoid cacti/cactus.

I would not have them in my yard, if I had the choice.

This reminds me of another host, many years ago in Edinburgh...

Hey, the new pic makes you look like a secret government operative, like the "Men in Black"!
