I have previously presented the post:

Examining the Blogger pageview statistics the article has above average pageview numbers. That is by my modest standards.
Therefore, with the philosophical 'tension' between potentially pleasing readers and writing what I am led to write, I hope the following is reasonable.
First some crucial commentary on the previous post as in live in the flesh from an actual human being.

Although there have been no reported injuries with the ritual the risks are still apparent and in my mind there are no theological benefits.
Grenz, Guretzki and Nordling explain that original sin is the state of alienation from God in which all human beings are born. Grenz (1999: 86). The sin of Adam of Eve via fallen nature being imputed to the rest of humanity. Grenz (1999: 86).
Biblically this can only be reversed for human beings through the atoning and resurrection work of Christ applied to persons as in being chosen and predestined in Christ, Ephesians 1 by grace through faith unto good works, Ephesians 2.
It cannot be reversed by work, works or ritual.
A view only intensified through twelve years of MPhil and PhD work in the areas of free will and determinism.
This is not to state that I am opposed to efforts to bring children into Christian faith and even Christian philosophy at an early age.
Teaching children within a Christian worldview is essential and this should include Bible and Theology, and I would recommend at some point Philosophy to some degree.
And yes, I of course support a full range of education for a child.
I realize that other worldviews should also be understood.
Reformed Presbyterians, and I am member of a PCA Church practice infant baptism or paedobaptism.
According to John P. Sartelle:
'The Bible teaches that the sign of salvation is to be applied to the children of believing parents. In the Old Testament, circumcision was the sign. The New Testament baptism is the sign'. Sartelle (1985: 22). It is a sign of a covenant between the parents and God to raise their children in the Lord, in Christ.
To me this is a theological construct and not explicitly Biblical as would be Believer's Baptism (Matthew 28: 18-20) for which there is a stronger Biblical case, however, it is not heretical.
I would disagree with a Baptist or like that states it is.
One could as well based on the Reformed views on free will and determinism and compatibilism, be a Reformed Baptist, or like and commit one's child to the covenant of God in Christ without infant baptism or paedobaptism and maintain it reasonably Biblically, theologically and philosophically.
This based primarily on the concept and theology that can be found in Ephesians 1 and 2 that God chooses/elects by grace through faith unto good works, whom he causes/wills.

As the Preacher stood by the bed, Marvin’s condition seemed to deteriorate, and Marvin motioned for someone to quickly pass him a pen and paper. The Preacher quickly got a pen and paper and lovingly handed it to Marvin. But before he had a chance to read the note, Marvin died.

Philosophical points about using Facebook as dating site, which I do not do. I use it as a social media site, which has potential for a wide variety of social implications.
ReplyDeleteI reason there would be negatives if I was to get involved in a serious relationship with a woman 35+ old or 35- old, simply based on the sinfulness of humanity, male and female individually, myself and the woman.
I prefer the negatives of someone 35-, of course someone that is an adult. Again, I have commented on this before on my blogs and probably few on Facebook that approach Facebook as a dating site would bother to try to understand me well enough to even read my blogs.
Making Facebook what it is not, a dating site is a mistake. I am a growing tired of a few that are expecting to chat every time I am on there as if because I accepted a friend request and I am therefore attracted to them. Slightly younger women with a child can act in a similar way.
No, it does not mean that. I have am a complex male, contrary to how the media portrays males, with a wide variety of reasons for doing most things, including being on Facebook and Blogger. I noticed one 35+ recently defriended me because I assume I was not interested in chatting with her in a romantic context and I have another one almost that age that could be heading the same way.
I am relieved.
I reason that even if with a 35-, I really found interested 'hounded me' this would be a turn off and relationship experts Christian and secular state not to do this.
Instead I think for example, I am not stating this is as ‘gospel’, an email or chat, perhaps planned once a week or so would suffice and for one to find out what the person is interested in would be very good. In my case it would be pretty apparent and reading on my blogs and interacting with me on that would be part of the plan as opposed to attempting to hammer away at me in a relationship context which seems desperate.
I have no issues with commitment, etc..
I would not stalk away at someone expecting them to chat. And the handful of women online that may reason I find them interesting can testify to that...

On Tuesday afternoon, a week before Markham council is to hear a motion that could effectively scuttle the arena project, its proponents issued an announcement that claimed its biggest roadblock — other than the utter lack of prospects for a suitable anchor tenant — had been overcome.'
'But that does not, in any way, make this project “100% privately funded.” It didn’t in the spring of 2012, and it doesn’t now. Mr. Roustan and the project’s council supporters, including Mayor Frank Scarpitti, have long insisted that the arena, despite being built with a 50% contribution from the city, would not count as having public dollars behind it since the city would raise its share through “voluntary development contributions.” When this plan was first tabled, those were to be levies of between $2,000 and $6,000 for each new home or condo unit built in the city. Thus, even though new homes would be subjected to a significant new tax, the people of Markham were advised not to think of it that way. As the Tuesday release put it, this money, $162.5-million of it, should be considered “private sector developer contributions.”'
As I noted previously, if I am a taxpayer I have to oppose this:
The NHL is foolishly, in my opinion ignoring the 13 million person S.Ont market for a second franchise, due to the Toronto Maple Leafs monopoly of the market and the desire to further expand into the USA, even though these will be far less lucrative markets such as Seattle. Even a better market such as Quebec City would be less lucrative than Markham.
Sadly, Markham, if the arena is built may likely end up like Hamilton which is outside the GTA but in S.Ont and have at least at first a modern NHL style arena, but it will likely remain without a major tenant. Hamilton's arena now needs upgrading although it is large enough.
As a Canadian hockey fan, not a fan of the NHL as operated, I hope the project goes through just so that there is another Canadian option available for relocation, if not expansion.

ReplyDeleteHe would always greet you with a big smile and a firm handshake.
Even after living in our neighborhood for over 50 years,
No one could really say they knew him very well.
Before his retirement, he took the bus to work each morning.
The lone sight of him walking down the street often worried us.
He had a slight limp from a bullet wound received in WWII.
Watching him, we worried that although he had survived WWII,
He may not make it through our changing uptown neighborhood with its ever-increasing random violence, gangs, and drug activity.
When he saw the flyer at our local church asking for volunteers for caring for the gardens behind the minister's residence, he responded in his characteristically unassuming manner. Without fanfare, he just signed up.
He was well into his 87th year when the very thing we had always feared finally happened..
He was just finishing his watering for the day when three gang members approached him.

"Would you like a drink from the hose?"
The tallest and toughest-looking of the three said, "Yeah, sure," with a malevolent little smile.
As Carl offered the hose to him, the other two grabbed Carl's arm, throwing him down.
As the hose snaked crazily over the ground, dousing everything in its way, Carl's assailants stole his retirement watch and his wallet, and then fled.
Carl tried to get himself up, but he had been thrown down on his bad leg.
He lay there trying to gather himself as the minister came running to help him.
Although the minister had witnessed the attack from his window, he couldn't get there fast enough to stop it.
"Carl, are you okay? Are you hurt?" the minister kept asking as he helped Carl to his feet.
Carl just passed a hand over his brow and sighed, shaking his head.
"Just some punk kids. I hope they'll wise-up someday."
His wet clothes clung to his slight frame as he bent to pick up the hose. He adjusted the nozzle again and started to water..

"I've got to finish my watering. It's been very dry lately," came the calm reply.
Satisfying himself that Carl really was all right, the minister could only marvel.
Carl was a man from a different time and place.
A few weeks later the three returned.. Just as before their threat was unchallenged.
Carl again offered them a drink from his hose.
This time they didn't rob him.
They wrenched the hose from his hand and drenched him head to foot in the icy water.
When they had finished their humiliation of him, they sauntered off down the street, throwing catcalls and curses, falling over one another laughing at the hilarity of what they had just done.
Carl just watched them.
Then he turned toward the warmth giving sun, picked up his hose, and went on with his watering.
The summer was quickly fading into fall Carl was doing some tilling when he was startled by the sudden approach of someone behind him.

As he struggled to regain his footing, he turned to see the tall leader of his summer tormentors reaching down for him. He braced himself for the expected attack.
"Don't worry old man, I'm not gonna hurt you this time."
The young man spoke softly, still offering the tattooed and scarred hand to Carl. As he helped Carl get up, the man pulled a crumpled bag from his pocket and handed it to Carl.
"What's this?"
Carl asked. "It's your stuff," the man explained. "It's your stuff back.
Even the money in your wallet" "I don't understand," Carl said. "Why would you help me now?"
The man shifted his feet, seeming embarrassed and ill at ease. "I learned something from you," he said. "I ran with that gang and hurt people like you we picked you because you were old and we knew we could do it But every time we came and did something to you, instead of yelling and fighting back, you tried to give us a drink. You didn't hate us for hating you. You kept showing love against our hate."
He stopped for a moment. "I couldn't sleep after we stole your stuff, so here it is back."
He paused for another awkward moment, not knowing what more there was to say. "That bag's my way of saying thanks for straightening me out, I guess." And with that, he walked off down the street.
Carl looked down at the sack in his hands and gingerly opened it. He took out his retirement watch and put it back on his wrist. Opening his wallet, he checked for his wedding photo. He gazed for a moment at the young bride that still smiled back at him from all those years ago..
He died one cold day after Christmas that winter. Many people attended his funeral in spite of the weather.
In particular the minister noticed a tall young man that he didn't know sitting quietly in a distant corner of the church.
The minister spoke of Carl's garden as a lesson in life.
In a voice made thick with unshed tears, he said, "Do your best and make your garden as beautiful as you can. We will never forget Carl and his garden."
The following spring another flyer went up. It read: "Person needed to care for Carl's garden."
The flyer went unnoticed by the busy parishioners until one day when a knock was heard at the minister's office door.
Opening the door, the minister saw a pair of scarred and tattooed hands holding the flyer. "I believe this is my job, if you'll have me," the young man said.
The minister recognized him as the same young man who had returned the stolen watch and wallet to Carl.
He knew that Carl's kindness had turned this man's life around. As the minister handed him the keys to the garden shed, he said, "Yes, go take care of Carl's garden and honor him."
The man went to work and, over the next several years, he tended the flowers and vegetables just as Carl had done.
During that time, he went to college, got married, and became a prominent member of the community. But he never forgot his promise to Carl's memory and kept the garden as beautiful as he thought Carl would have kept it.
One day he approached the new minister and told him that he couldn't care for the garden any longer. He explained with a shy and happy smile, "My wife just had a baby boy last night, and she's bringing him home on Saturday."
"Well, congratulations!" said the minister, as he was handed the garden shed keys. "That's wonderful! What's the baby's name?"
"Carl," he replied.
