Rick Steves: German Cities
Snowed in, last night, I viewed Rick Steves' fascinating promotional documentary series on German cities.
I visited Germany once as an eight year old, with the family. I remember I was very impressed by the historical buildings, especially the churches, when we visited Cologne and Bonn.
As I was aware, the documentary noted that Germany was not historically known as a nation state until 1871. Canada was a nation state in 1867.

Germanic kingdoms did exist previously within the Holy Roman Empire (800-1806 estimated) and in other forms from 1806 to present day modern, democratic Germany.
The documentary noted:
(Paraphrased) The Holy Roman Empire was neither holy nor Roman, and was not even an empire.
But it was a rival of France, England and Spain in the era.
I also appreciated the documentary placing special emphasis on the religious history of Martin Luther and the Reformation within the Holy Roman Empire, and the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation in 2017.
This entry should be useful in order for myself and others to reference the names of the various Germanic kingdoms such as Prussia, Bavaria and Saxony, for example, often mentioned in historical contexts.
