Church Sponsored Teen Gun Giveaway Canceled
Windsor Hills Baptist Church of Oklahoma has canceled it's giveaway of a semiautomatic assault rifle at its weekend youth conference because one of the organizers injured his foot. The gun is a prize in the weekend's shooting competition.
The church’s youth pastor, Bob Ross, says “We have 21 hours of preaching and teaching throughout the week,I don’t want people thinking ‘My goodness, we’re putting a weapon in the hand of somebody that doesn’t respect it who are then going to go out.. and kill, That’s not at all what we’re trying to do.” The gun, which cost $800 will be given away next year.

I am not against someone in a home owning a gun for self-defence. But I have two points.
1. Why is a Christian church even considering giving a semiautomatic assault rifle to a teen which is not an adult and may not be responsible with the weapon? Why is a Christian church involved with distributing guns at all? That should be up to licensed gun shops and stores and the civil authorities.
2. The youth pastor's name is Bob Ross! There, a happy little gun for you, and when you shoot those happy little burglars as they break into your happy little house, if you shoot the wrong person during the burglary, remember, there are no mistakes just happy accidents.

I don't see anything wrong with them handing it out besides the obvious facts that the people attending it probably weren't mature enough to be owning something like that and that churches aren't really there to hand out guns.

ReplyDeleteThat's easy. So that, when Christian students in schools are asked at gunpoint, "Do you believe in God," they can whip out their semiautomatic and reply, "Yeah! You gotta problem with that?!"
(Not to make light of school shootings, but there is so much horrific stuff going on in this world today, you just gotta have a sense of humor.)

BTW, I just saw on Christian TV that there are many more Jewish Christians in Israel today than there were 10 years ago. They claim there is a Christian revival going on among Jews in Israel. The commentator said that God is lifting the veil from the eyes of the Jewish people.
The end times are very near, I think. False doctrine is increasing among Christians, natural disasters are increasing in intensity and frequency (for example, just last week, 5 people were killed by lightning in one week...and some say that the chances of being struck by lightning are about one in 3 million, more rare than your chances of winning the jackpot in the Lotto), and many of the prophetic signs are beginning to be fulfilled, it seems.

Jesus taught persons to love your enemies in Matthew 5: 44 and we are to love others as much as we love ourselves in Matthew 22 and Mark 12. Romans 13 allows the state to use deadly force to maintain law and order. The Christian cannot Biblically take a life outside of the laws of the land within Biblical standards. This would be for self-defence purposes only as a civilian, or for professionally maintaining law and order internally or externally.
Some Christians have sinned and taken lives in error and some have claimed to be Christian and have taken lives sinfully, but these killings were not done legitimately in Jesus' name.

Well, if I have wasted my time studying theology then put your name down for the comments and let us see if you can successfully debate my theology, and we shall see how much of a waste of time my worldview is compared to yours. I do not study astrology because I reason it is based on guesswork in some cases and divination in others and I would rather trust in the eternal God that has revealed himself throughout history in Scripture.
Please do not bother leaving another comment unless you are going to be respectful; Otherwise your comment will go straight into the trash and my other readers will not have the opportunity to find out how much you know about theology in order for you to reason that it is a waste of time to study.

ReplyDeleteTheology is in broad terms an academic discipline that combines philosophy with Biblical Studies. It takes years of study to understand it and be good at it, and all the rock throwing in the world in not going to change that fact.

I cannot believe that this church would be giving an assault rifle to a teenager!!! I think that there could be something else that the church could have given this young person. I understand that this church held a shooting contest, so I am assuming that guns are a norm for this part of the States, but I still find it baffling for a church to give an assault weapon out to a youth. Is he going to use it for hunting?? and if not, why does he need it?

The chance of any 1 person among, say, 50000 possible targets, would be considerably less (and lesser in inverse proportion to the number of possible targets). 90 people are killed every year in the U.S. by lightning, which is one every 4 days. Even so, if those 5 people were all in the U.S., that would still be very unusual. If that is counting the whole world, then probably not so unusual.
Having said all that, it does seem like there is a lot more change happening these days, a lot more uncertainty.

The problem may be one of perception. Writing, as you are, from Canada, which has some amazing laws for making sure its citizens have no recourse in case of an attack while paying un-called-for taxes for the illusion hat they somehow might have. All that aside, the news article itself was biased on at least two points. First, there is no such thing as a semi-automatic assault rifle. Contradiction in terms. Semi-automatic means it fires once when you pull the trigger. To give the writer benefit of the doubt, it may have been a small hunting rifle with a lightweight stock, such as the Ruger Mini-14 (as if the stock were a hazard?), but more likely, from the mentality of the US press in general, "assault" was tossed in for effect.
ReplyDeleteBut to judge a person unfit to handle a hunting weapon, regardless of background or training, merely on basis of age? Is everybody uniformly unstable in teen years, and suddenly is issued their clue bag at their 21st birthday party? No, and the NRA and other groups have been offering for years a comprehensive gun safety course which qualifies responsible young people to handle firearms responsibly, so preventing untold accidents and teaching people from the start to treat firearms with respect.
Thought: If honest people are afraid of a self-stigmatisation of owning a means of protection, dishonest people are well armed, what then of human life, personal/family safety, and civil order? Even if called, the police won't be there for a few minutes, and then take a few minutes to assess the situation, and that would give them time to make the chalk drawings around the warm bodies. Which of course will make the papers, and give the MPs and Congressmen fodder for a call for more police recruitment, giving a false sense of security until next time when...m

Personally, I reason 21 is too old of an age to become an adult.
