Evil for evil?

Within the last month I have three new blog links named Larry...incredible.

If I become messed up with a Larry, please forgive me.

8To sum up, (A)all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, (B)brotherly, (C)kindhearted, and (D)humble in spirit;

9(E)not returning evil for evil or (F)insult for insult, but giving a (G)blessing instead; for (H)you were called for the very purpose that you might (I)inherit a blessing.

G.J. Polkinghorne explains that within the brotherhood of faith harsh words are to be answered in accordance with how Christ did it, with a blessing. Christians must speak and do right and be peaceable. Polkinghorne (1986: 1558).

Christians are not to return evil for evil to other Christians.

21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Leslie C. Allen writes that Paul urges Christians to not let pagan neighbours have cause for criticism of actions. A way to bring this about is non-retaliation by the Christian. Christians should not break the peace. Justice and vengeance belongs to God. Allen (1986: 1341-1342).

Christians are not to return evil for evil to non-Christians.

This is of course all easier said that done, admittedly.

This can be difficult to do even in the blogging world as well.

From:

TSN

"LONDON - Chelsea striker Didier Drogba was suspended for three matches on Tuesday for hurling a coin back into the crowd during a League Cup game against Burnley.

The incident happened in last Wednesday's game after Drogba had scored at Stamford Bridge and was celebrating the goal close to the visiting fans.

Some of the Burnley followers threw coins at the Ivory Coast striker and Drogba picked one up and threw it back. He was shown a yellow card for celebrating in front of the Burnley fans but the referee did not see the coin incident and the Football Association decided to charge him with violent conduct.

Police are also investigating the incident and have called on fans to identify who threw the coins..."

I can somewhat understand Drogba's actions. The thrown coins could have done slight to significant damage above his neck especially. Operating in my corrupted human nature (Romans 1-3) alone, apart from being filled by God's spirit, I would in that situation not just want to throw the coins back at the person or persons that threw them, but go back in the crowd and punish the offender or offenders with force.

But, there are security officers and police present at professional football matches and it would be their duty to apprehend offenders. The state and its representatives are established by God to maintain law and order (Romans 13) and a footballer, whether it would me, hypothetically, or Drogba, should have simply moved out of the line of fire of the coins and not attempted to return evil for evil.

By the way, with my door man build I would have never made it as a professional footballer.

As a soccer player I would be too much of a pylon, as in the orange plastic cone that does not move (much/fast).

I am quite good at three British computer soccer games I own from the 1990s though.

Too bad there are not professional leagues, perhaps I would be a 'supastaw'.

As well, I could certainly be a security or police officer at a football match!

There are legitimate situations for a person to use force in self-defence I reason, that being when an official of the state, or sufficient numbers of officials, that are involved in law enforcement are not present to assist and one is protecting self or others from bodily harm. However, besides the fact that Drogba was taking matters into his hands unecessarily, Drogba was not going to bring justice to the situation by throwing a coin back into the crowd as he would very likely hit the wrong person and not hit the right person, or persons that were guilty of throwing coins. His suspension is therefore merited, although I feel bad for him and reason the offender or offenders that threw the coins should be found, if at all possible, and banned from football/soccer stadiums for a very long time, if not life.

ALLEN, LESLIE C. (1986) 'Romans', in F.F. Bruce (gen.ed.), The International Bible Commentary.

POLKINGHORNE, G.J. (1986) ‘First Peter’, in F.F. Bruce (gen.ed.), The International Bible Commentary.

My Mom sent me this joke, and I fully realize that there are many intelligent blondes in this world.

"Subject: Ice Fishing

A blonde wanted to go ice fishing. She'd seen many books on the subject, and finally getting all the necessary tools together, she made for the ice.

After positioning her comfy footstool, she started to make a circular cut in the ice. Suddenly, from the sky, a voice boomed,

"THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."

Startled, the blonde moved further down the ice, poured a thermos of cappuccino, and began to cut yet another hole.

Again from the heavens the Voice bellowed,

"THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."

The blonde, now worried, moved away, clear down to the opposite end of the ice. She set up her stool once more and tried again to cut her hole. The voice came once more,

"THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."

She stopped, looked skyward, and said, "IS THAT YOU LORD?"

The voice replied, "NO, THIS IS THE MANAGER OF THE HOCKEY RINK""

Here is a joke that is both theological and satirical which I viewed in 2004:

On a British comedy television program in 2004, Jonathan Ross stated that a Muslim extremist suicide bomber was expecting to be taken to heaven where he would be rewarded with 72 virgins.

Instead he was given a 72 year old virgin.

A humourous soccer fall, and perhaps dive from a manager that leads to brawls in the stadium. In this example, better law and order needed to be maintained in my opinion.

  1. Good article...enjoyed the ice fishing joke as well!! :() The tongue is what gets me in trouble...it is so much easier to do an act of kindness via action...then to bite my tongue before I say something stupid or wrong!! That is why I need Jesus...His forgiveness & help to do the right thing!! :()

Hey, if you were a security officer at a football game, you could "PUNISH" the fan on behalf of the player.

Revenge is a difficult thing to give up when one is, oh, so right. It takes prayer and faith to permit the Lord to be incharge of the unjust hoodlum's fate.

  12. "A way to bring this about is non-retaliation by the Christian. Christians should not break the peace. Justice and vengeance belongs to God"

When I hear or read about how we are to behave as Christians, it usually entails some form of What Would Jesus Do? But to me, this is simplistic and misses the point of the Gospel and the transformation that it (through the Spirit) accomplishes in our lives. Jesus is not our exemplar. He shows us how to live our lives not because He's the only perfect Law-keeper, but because He is the perfect "son".

We emulate Jesus not because we stop and consider what He would do in a certain situation; we emulate Him by living as Children of God. As Jesus was preeminently the Son of God and lived His life accordingly, so we, by the indwelling Spirit, are sons of God and are to live our lives accordingly. Jesus didn't have to stop and think about the "Law" or consider how to behave in certain situations; He simply lived out the reality of who He was as God's Son. Likewise, we don't need to stop and consider what Jesus would do in certain situations (and He doesn't call us to this); we are simply to live out the reality of who we are as "son's" of God in Him.

It may seem like I'm nit-picking here, but the reality is that when we stop and consider WWJD or what the "Law" says about this situation, we end up becoming (or living like we are) obligated to "law". WWJD becomes for us the "law" in the very same way that we tend to think about the OC Law--an obligation that we must meet in order to be pleasing to God. And really, what need is there of the Spirit when all we need to do is behave according to "law"? Anyone with enough motivation can do that.

We're called to "follow" Jesus by living as Children of God. And we do this by the leading and power of the Spirit as He transforms our lives back into the image of Christ. Jesus simply lived out the reality of who He was as the Son of God; we are simply to live out the reality of who we are as Children of God. We're not to consider WWJD, we're to consider WWWD (what would we) as Children of God. We're simply to be who we are!

Of course, that entails knowing who we are; and we find that answer as we read the Scripture and understand what God says about Himself, His purposes in Christ and who we are in Him. We have no obligation to do anything; we're obligated to be who who we are in Him.

I say all of this (which is one of my hobby horses, as you know by now) because I think it's so important to be free from "law" in all of its forms. We've been in-lawed to Christ by the Spirit so that the "law" is written on our hearts--the "law" of the New Creation (who we are in Christ). To be free from "law" is to be liberated to live lives of love by the indwelling Spirit; it's to live as Children of God, not as "law-keepers".

So what has this to do with your post? Well...we're not to administer "evil or evil" because we are Children of God; we're New Creations in Christ who exist in a completely different paradigm than this "world". We don't return "evil for evil" because this is not who we are--not because we're commanded not to.

Another rant from GGM...are you tired of it yet? :-)

Too bad, as long as you allow my comments you're probably going to be subject to my "soapbox". It's your own fault! :-)

I hope you don't throw a "yellow" card my way!

  13. Hi Russ.
I like the way you get people thinking about stuff like this in a humorous way. Keep up the good work.

I am not a soccer fan myself. We have it here in Australia and over the years there has been a lot of violence usually in the crowd. Our Aussie rules game tends to be less violent. There have been many theories about why this happens. One is that the score is often very low in soccer and the fans get frustrated.

As for our behaviour as Christians, I try and be the peace maker but sometimes people don't want to make peace so you would have to deal with them "accordingly."

    Catch you soon Russ.

You are not a citizen here and possibly, this will not effect your life. However, I know that you have a broad reach with your blog and friends.
    Obama's born Conspiracy
The link above will take you to a blog from one of the analyst who determined Barak Obama's Certificate of Live Birth to be a forged copy. The blog will tell you exactly what he did to discover the fraud and display the evidence. It took me nearly two hours to get through this.
Give credit to Christine of Talk Wisdom for sending this on to me.
I believe if you ask your readers to take this link, and distribute it to as many people as they possibly can, we may be able to avoid a race war which the mainstream media is setting us up for by not reporting the story as it unfolds. What we can do is soften the shock and ease anger before the possibility of The SCOTUS announcing they will try the case.

  17. I love a good old conspiracy theory. Think about the implications. Obama, put into government by a secret society, obfuscating his true credentials. Who pulls the strings? Was obama selected and mentored, just to play this role? Imagine the scenario, one day the men in black knock on Obama's door. "How would you like to be the most powerful man in the world?", "But I'm not a true American". "Leave that to us, do as we say and everything will be well."

  18. Hello Russ,

That was a good post, but a very hard one to follow. Our flesh wants to defend, offend and or take vengeance, it is only by the power of the Spirit in us that we can refrain from acting out, whether by tongue or physical aggression they all want their way. May God's will be done in us and not our own.

I liked the blonde joke. BTW i am a blonde but not a natural blonde. I always love a good blonde joke and so does my daughter who is a natural blonde. We are always up for a good laugh :)

Yes, if it turns out to be true that Obama was not born in Hawaii, but Kenya or anywhere outside of the United States, then this has been a conspiracy, by his family and the persons that forged the document and anyone on his political team that knew about it.

It is disturbing that I have not as of yet seen this story in the national media.

I am also, obviously upset about the entire scenerio of Obama's citizenship. Not only that, but there exist a petition here in the U.S. to the Supreme Court requesting any documents of five! aliases! of Obama. One of which says "Barry Soetoro". He was registerred in Indonesia as Barry Soetoro for school. So, what is his name in the Ivy league school records that are sealed?

Here is something else. Everytime, I post a thread on Comcast Forums that questions Obama's Birth certificate, the thread gets locked.

  23. Hi Russ,
I went to the site Chucky sent to you to post.
The first thing I noted is the guy says Polarik claimed to have stated one of the copies went through PhotoShop.
I read all of the material Polarik provided and I distinctly recall a place where he is saying "Not PhotoShop". Now, I do not recall him ever saying about any of the copies that the image was ever done by Photo Shop. I could be wrong. There was a lot of information. However, I know I read the words, "not Photo Shop".

Two, Polarik claims that the image had been produced by several different copies. I see no problem with the very obvious date bleeding through from the reverse side. I would think that would be a feature, even I, if I were a forger would want to ensure stays in the image. It still does not mean that there is another side to this digital image.
There can still be a blank side. Or not even a digital side two. That is the point! Where is the reverse side of this document?

    Hawaii

State declares Obama birth certificate genuine
    Oct 31, 2008

HONOLULU (AP) — State officials say there's no doubt Barack Obama was born in Hawaii.

Health Department Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said Friday she and the registrar of vital statistics, Alvin Onaka, have personally verified that the health department holds Obama's original birth certificate.

Fukino says that no state official, including Republican Gov. Linda Lingle, ever instructed that Obama's certificate be handled differently.

She says state law bars release of a certified birth certificate to anyone who does not have a tangible interest.

Some Obama critics claim he was not born in the US.

Earlier Friday, a southwest Ohio magistrate rejected a challenge to Obama's citizenship. Judges in Seattle and Philadelphia recently dismissed similar suits.

  25. Russ,
The date of the article is October 31 and November 3. The Supreme Court is still conducting a closed door conference on December 5.
So the question still is, where is the physical evidents? Why has the Democratic National Commitee not proven its existence for voters who have a valid interest in who this man is?

  26. The ice fishing joke was funny.

Since this is 'Satire and Theology,' here is my contribution to silliness: When I was reading about the crowd throwing coins at Drogba, I started imagining hired ninjas throwing shurikens (many throwing stars used by ninjas started out as old coins, or pieces of metal, and they would sharpen the edges; contrary to popular belief, they were not meant to kill, but primarily to cause nuisance or distraction, to gain advantage over the opponent in battle, as a secondary weapon to the sword or spear).

I found this Snopes page that addresses the question, "Is Barack Obama a natural-born citizen of the U.S.?"

I also found this Snopes page about his Birth Certificate

In my opinion, the power of verifying or denying the authenticity of Obama's birth certificate was in the hands of that judge and the Hawaiian officials. Even if the certificate was forged, with all the media and so many people being practically fanatics of Obama, might it not be feasible that even a judge or an official might bend to pressure or even be bribed? I have no idea, but it kind of makes me wonder.

IMO, it would take a lot more than a forged birth certificate to stop Obama from being President, especially with all the forces that are supporting him so strongly.

I still think that Obama is going to be much worse than even Bill Clinton was, and, IMO, Bill Clinton has so far been the worst President in U.S. history, because he was the most liberal.

  27. Regarding the coin-throwing incident again:
Years ago, when I was a teacher at a Christian school, I was out on the playground, and a car with teenagers drove by. There was a fence between us, and they threw a raw egg over the fence as they drove by, hitting me right in the midsection. The guy had really good aim, and he threw it quite hard (and I was not at all fat at the time), but it bounced off my abs and splattered open in the soft sand at my feet (proving that it was raw). I immediately picked up a large rock to throw at them, but then I realized I was at a Christian school, with children around me, and if I threw that rock, I would be a bad Christian witness. So, even though I wanted so badly to throw that rock at them, I dropped it.

I am convinced that an angel of God prevented that raw egg from splattering all over my shirt, especially since I was within the boundary of a Christian school.

  28. Thank you, Mr. Jackson...I mean Mr. Jenkins, well done.

In my opinion, the power of verifying or denying the authenticity of Obama's birth certificate was in the hands of that judge and the Hawaiian officials.

    A good point.

Even if the certificate was forged, with all the media and so many people being practically fanatics of Obama, might it not be feasible that even a judge or an official might bend to pressure or even be bribed? I have no idea, but it kind of makes me wonder.

Sure there could be a bribe, but we would need solid evidence. I remain open-minded.

IMO, it would take a lot more than a forged birth certificate to stop Obama from being President, especially with all the forces that are supporting him so strongly.

It would take more than that to have the Republicans back in office for this term, in my opinion.

    Published: November 25, 2008 2:00 PM
Updated: November 25, 2008 3:01 PM Langley RCMP towed away a van on Tuesday from the same Walnut Grove complex where a bomb went off on Nov. 8.

Police spokesman Const. Holly Marks told The Times that 208 Street outside the townhouse complex in Walnut Grove was closed while police conducted further investigation into the bombing that left Gary Stevenson with serious injuries. He opened a package that had been left in a bag on his doorstep, as the family was in the process of moving out of the townhouse complex, in the 8900 block of 208 Street.

The road was closed between 88 and 93 Avenues for several hours Tuesday while the investigation was underway. Witnesses told The Times that the van was towed away from the complex, where it had been parked. It is believed it will undergo further scrutiny by police.

Stevenson suffered lacerations and burns as a result of the blast, and underwent surgery to remove shrapnel from his abdomen. Police have made no arrests in the bombing case.

    Bomb closes street again
Police closed down the Walnut Grove street hit by a bombing earlier this month for a second search.
    Matthew Claxton, Langley Advance
    Published: Tuesday, November 25, 2008
A stretch of 208th Street between 88th and 93rd Avenues was closed for about 40 minutes, between 2:20 and 3 p.m.

Langley RCMP said the street closure in Walnut Grove was to search for evidence as part of an investigation into a bombing on Nov. 9. Officers were looking for further evidence in the case, said RCMP Const. Holly Marks. She could not comment further on what, precisely, officers hoped to find.

There were no indications that there was another explosive device, Marks said, and the road closure was purely precautionary. The original blast on Nov. 9 injured Gary Stevenson, 39, a missionary and pastor for Campus Crusade for Christ.

Stevenson was in the process of moving his family out of the townhouse complex in the 8900 block of 208th Street when he found a wrapped package by the door.
The package exploded, sending Stevenson to the hospital. He has since been released and is said to be recovering.

It is unknown whether Stevenson was targeted, or if the attack was random.

Obama’s Birth Certificate Challenger Keeps Going
    http://blogs.forbes.com/trailwatch/2008/11/obamas-birth--1.html

    ReplyDelete
  32. It states:

"Obama’s Birth Certificate Challenger Keeps Going

You've got to hand it to Philip J. Berg: he doesn't give up easily. You might recall that Philadelphia attorney Berg tried, and failed, to halt the presidential election of Barack Obama on the grounds that he is not a native-born citizen. Game over, right? Wrong.

Berg filed a writ of certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court in late October, asking that the highest court review the decision of the U.S. District Court in Pennsylvania. The latter court dismissed Berg's claims because he lacked standing to bring them. Standing requires plaintiffs to prove they are directly affected by the issue at hand, with evidence of injury that is concrete and particular. In its decision the district court said Berg "does not, and we believe cannot, establish injury in fact." It also dismissed his claims as frivolous.

Berg takes this in stride. His writ, he says, requires Obama and the Democratic National Council to respond by December 1. Also, he has another arrow in his quiver. He's filed in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., under the False Claims Act, which is often used in Medicaid fraud. "I am basing this on the fact that as a U.S. senator [Obama] is collecting money illegally because he is not a citizen of this country," he says.

One of the pillars of Berg's argument is that Obama doesn't have a legally-valid U.S. birth certificate because he was born in Kenya. Though debunking specialists from Snopes.com and Factcheck.org have asserted the validity of a birth certificate released by the Obama campaign and affirmed by the State of Hawaii, Berg remains unconvinced. Factcheck.org, he said, is suspect because it is run by a group called Annenberg of Chicago, where Obama once sat on a board with William Ayers. Snopes.com worked off the same false document, he said.

Brooks Jackson, director of Factcheck.org, admits that his group is a part of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, but says the Obama board connection is a canard.

The only connection Obama had with Annenberg came in 1995 through 1999when the president-elect was the board chairman for The Annenberg Challenge in Chicago. The Challenge was charged with distributing $49 million in order to improve public education.

"The connection with us is that Obama was the board chairman of a group that benefited from Annenberg's philanthropy years before we came into existence," Jackson says. "Somehow that was twisted into Obama sat on our board." Factcheck.org, in fact, does not have a board of directors.

The seeming last word on the subject came from Dr. Chiyome Fukino, the director of Hawaii's department of health. On October 31she issued a press release stating that she had personally seen and verified that Hawaii's state department of health has Obama's original birth certificate on record.

Berg responds that nowhere does the press release say this original certificate is actually American. Instead, he says, the certificate in Hawaii's vaults is from Kenya.

Hawaii's answer to this will surely fuel more fires. "Unfortunately the way state laws are written we are not allowed to confirm vital information and vital records," said Janice Okubo, a spokeswoman for Hawaii's department of health. "I cannot confirm individual information because that is against the law."

She added, though, that Dr. Fukino does have authority over and maintains records for individuals born in Hawaii.

    --David Serchuk"

  37. Hi Russ…

“Love your enemy” comes to mind….although Drogba should not have thrown the coin at the fans (after all he does make his living with his head and feet) the fans should of course also not have thrown the coins at him…and one could also say that since the authorities are entrusted with both the safety of the fans and the players that they had failed their duty…

Do you remember a couple of years ago in the Champions League when the AC Milan goaltender was hit with a flare?

Although players can get caught up in the passion of the moment a professional should be able to control themselves in such situations…of course although I love soccer/football we must keep in mind that if players like Drogba are looked at the wrong way they plummet to the ground as if shot…

    Contrast that to the following:

    Or even better….

    As per the blond joke….

  38. Thanks, LS.

I agree. The authorities often fail to prevent many things from happening, but they are still at the stadium to maintain law and order.

I remember the flare incident with Dida and also the incident where he was touched by the Celtic fan and dived. That was funny.

I must confess I do find much of the football shenanigans amusing, but I do not like the extreme and dangerous violence.

I think we probably agree on the shenanigans.
