Columbian football manager dives, wins academy award, brawl ensues

Here is some more soccer stupidity. I did not capitalize academy, this is a special football version.:)

1. It is tragic to see apparently 18 people stabbed, and 80 injured. I do not find this amusing. If I would have been in the stadium, I would have looked for a quick exit stage left, or right....forget the fighting.

2. The initial incident with the coach being hit and falling over, was a classic football dive. I reason that he made it look like he fell backwards. I do find that quite amusing, but do not in any way find the resulting brawls amusing.

3. A partial solution would appear to be that more security/police are needed for these events.

Feedback?

On the seriousness of the brawl and injuries.

On the shenanigans of the coach.

  1. Come On People its Only a Game!!
Is this what soccer has come to?
Or any other sport for that matter?
Why do people have to hurt other people in the name of a sport?
How could you stab someone? How could you live with yourself?
So many questions, to few answers.
As for the academy award winning diving coach, shame on you, because I'm sure you knew once the audience observed your hit and fall a riot would occur, and now you have to live with this fact, that there were so many people injured and even several stabbed!!
I recomend that these types of sports should start separating the home and visiting fans so the fights will be minimal. Sporting events should be made safe for the spectators especially the pregnant woman who was stabbed at this event.

  2. Thanks.

Sadly, this type of violence has been part of football for many years. It is sad to hear about the pregnant woman being stabbed and it was sad to see the young woman lying on the ground.

Home and away fans were separated when I went to English matches, but this does not entirely prohibit a brawl from occurring.

  3. Yeah, I've always wondered why soccer has such a great degree of violence among its fans. Sure, there can be rioting with North American fans over playoffs in various sports (I'm sure you know that, Russ, living in Vancouver!), but to stabbing and brawling of this degree is ridiculous.

Yet it's become so much a part of the soccer culture...where would you begin to stop it all?

I would increase security and police presence at matches. I would begin to end matches early and play games in front of empty stadiums if a significant number of fans did not obey civil laws.
Fans that break the law could also risk facing lifetime stadium bans.

    Cheers, Jake.

  8. You must be up early (or are you not in Vancouver?).

The essence of my comments were as follows.

This conduct seems centered around our self-centered nature. It does not seem that it is restricted to futbol alone but somehow its vilest expressions are often times associated with this sport.

If I am not able to get my way, I will fight for what I perceive as my right. In "civilized" America this happens as daddy works to free his son/daughter from the consequences of their behavior (subtle bribery or influence with the judge, principal, etc.). While it does not receive the same noterioty as does the hooligans, the inner selfish pride is all to prevelent.

  9. Thanks, Kermit, yes I am in Greater Vancouver.:) I can see your point as the hooligans can take sides and in selfishness stand up for their sides 'rights'.

  10. That was a beautiful dive, like 5 steps backwards! Academy award winning!
Seriously, I can't understand why people are so passionate about a sport; any sport.

  11. Thanks, Joey, and the dive likely led to the brawls.

Please note my Mom thinks the manager was just off balance and fell.

I think he was off balance and dove.

    Russ:)
