French Riviera (a place I would like to see)
Obviously a very non-exhaustive post.
I am Canadian, born in Canada; British my Dad was born there, and pro-American, in general terms.
1. It was good to see the Canadian pride and patriotism during the Winter Olympics in Vancouver-Whistler. A sense of community was built. This sense of community may lead to more problem solving within the Province of British Columbia and Canada and less bickering.

2. One of the things during the 1980s and 1990s that disturbed me concerning the American coverage of Olympic games was how the commentators seemed so focused on American athletes to the exclusion of those in the rest of world. From my Canadian perspective, this was philosophically attributed to American flag waving which Canadians mention.
This is one major reason as I child and younger adult, although being pro-American, I developed a strong dislike for the up and coming American hockey and soccer teams. I dreaded in the future having to view and listen to the commentators talk on and on about how America had triumphed against the odds once again as always, this time against traditionally strong nations in these sports and America was now the best in these sports just like in American sports.
Thankfully this has not as of yet happened, although the USA is a major hockey power they are not definitively the best, or usually the best. They have good soccer team, although not a top contender for the FIFA World Cup. I have serious doubts that the USA can ever dominate soccer as there are too many sports ahead of it in popularity in America that will take the best athletes. Plus there are many countries where soccer takes many of the best athletes as the number one sport.
3. Frankly, I have to admit, I think that over the last decade or so Canadian commentary has PERHAPS become more patriotic than American. I mostly watched Canadian Olympic coverage but also watched American in 2010. The American coverage on NBC seemed to spend more time on non-American significant contributors to the Olympics than did the Canadian commentators on CTV/TSN/Rogers Sportsnet. The Canadian coverage seemed intent on promoting Canada at all costs.
This became annoying to me. I think it more important to discuss the most significant athletes.
4. While living in England I certainly found the English and British to be patriotic and support their athletes, especially in regard to football. However, the close proximity to other European countries also very good at football, most notably, seemed to provide more objectively based reporting.
As a scholar I thrive on objectivity, I am not claiming to be completely objective, but I reason that lack of objectivity in one area of life could lead to lack of objectivity in other more important areas of life.

Yes, I stand on guard for thee.
My argument is that patriotism in sports, Canadian, American, and British, for example, is good. Related overzealous patriotism that lacks intellectual objectivity, may often be harmless.
My argument is that patriotism in sports, Canadian, American, and British, for example, is good. Related overzealous patriotism that lacks intellectual objectivity, may often be harmless.
However, if a primarily non-objective overzealous approach is taken within religion and philosophy, the result can be intellectual blindness.
A possible thinking pattern:
I am born in Canada (for example), therefore I support Canadian athletes.
I therefore do not support non-Canadian athletes.
I am born in this country, therefore I support my country.
I therefore do not support a different country.
I am born into this religion, therefore I support this religion.
I am born into this religion, therefore I support this religion.
I therefore do not support other differing religion.
I am born into this philosophy, therefore I support this philosophy.
I am born into this philosophy, therefore I support this philosophy.
Okay, okay, I know this guy in on my Facebook page and in the recent thekingpin68 comments (see link below), but here he is again. Version one, psychedelic and version two, perhaps the original.
Speaking of patriotism...
The Soviet Robot, Eduard Khil.
It's like his batteries were running out after about 2 minutes and 30 seconds and the Soviets had to bring the propaganda machine back in to be recharged and oiled.

Don't worry, Russ, American patriotism has been (generally speaking) slowly dying more and more since the 60's, I think. Maybe not a steady decline, as there still are American patriots today, but anti-patriotism has steadily grown in the U.S., it seems to me.
ReplyDeleteAnd, as far as Americans in the Olympics, I have long thought that America's declining love of God has not only affected our economics, politics, schools, and many other areas, but I have wondered if it has even affected how successful we are in the Olympics. As I have grown up, it has seemed to me that America has slowly/gradually been doing worse and worse in the Olympics (speaking in a very general sense). This is only a theory, and it does not seem to be clear-cut, as we still have wins and losses, but I have long suspected, and I think this is biblical, that, when a country follows and obeys God, God blesses that nation in many ways. And, when a country falls away from God, God in turn removes His hand of blessing, not quite in proportion to the nation's rebellion since God is merciful and slow to wrath and longsuffering in His patience, but still more and more as the nation moves more and more away from God. I have witnessed this in many areas regarding the U.S. And, because of the fact that the U.S. has turned away from God more and more, and even turned against God in many ways, I myself am not as patriotic as I used to be when I was younger, because I don't want to stand behind a country that does not stand behind God.
I should not be surprised if some here disagree with me, but this is something I have been witnessing over the years, and have seen occurring in a gradual way. America has traditionally been a nation extremely blessed by God, because of the fact that its Founders based this nation on biblical standards and love of God; but America has been drawing further and further from this...most especially, it seems to me, beginning in the 1960's, when people began rebelling against traditional values.
I am born into this religion, therefore I support this religion.
ReplyDeleteI therefore do not support other differing religion.
Personally, I do not say that I support Christianity because I was born into it. I would say that I 'support' it because I was born AGAIN into it.
It just makes me think of Atheists I have talked to in the past who have said, "What if you were born in another country? Instead of being a Christian, you might be a Buddhist." They suppose that we are only Christians because we were born in the West. However, the fact is that God is the One Who makes a person become a Christian, not the country they are born in. There are many who were born into other religions who are now Christians. And, in fact, white Anglo-Saxon Americans (probably even when you add Canadians and British to them) make up a minority of Christians in the world today. Probably those in the Far East (China, Korea, etc.) make up the majority of true (i.e., born again) Christians today.
US and Canada records
ReplyDeleteQuote:
'After all was said and done, 258 medals were presented to 25 different competing Nations. Following a slow start, the host country of Canada ended strong, setting a new Winter Games record by earning 14 gold medals, eclipsing Norway’s former record of 13 in 2002 at Salt Lake. They earned 26 medals overall, which supplanted them in third place in the total medal count.'
'Despite the loss in the gold medal game in men’s ice hockey, Team USA can lay claim to the overall medal count title, as they also set a new Winter Olympics record by taking home 37 total medals. The previous record was held by Germany in 2002 with 36. Team USA collected 9 gold medals, 15 silver medals, and 13 bronze medals.'
Yes, Jeff, I think many will disagree with some of your theory.
However, from the Hebrew Bible especially we see that turning from God on a national level leads to bad consequences.
King James Version (KJV)
1 Kings 14-15
14Moreover the LORD shall raise him up a king over Israel, who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam that day: but what? even now.
15For the LORD shall smite Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water, and he shall root up Israel out of this good land, which he gave to their fathers, and shall scatter them beyond the river, because they have made their groves, provoking the LORD to anger.
'Personally, I do not say that I support Christianity because I was born into it. I would say that I 'support' it because I was born AGAIN into it.'
ReplyDeleteWell stated.
John 3: 1-21 (New American Standard Bible)
1Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named (A)Nicodemus, a (B)ruler of the Jews;
2this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "(C)Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these (D)signs that You do unless (E)God is with him."
3Jesus answered and said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one (F)is born again he cannot see (G)the kingdom of God."
4Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born, can he?"
5Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of (H)water and the Spirit he cannot enter into (I)the kingdom of God.
6"(J)That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7"Do not be amazed that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'
8"(K)The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit."
9Nicodemus said to Him, "How can these things be?"
10Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you (L)the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things?
11"Truly, truly, I say to you, (M)we speak of what we know and (N)testify of what we have seen, and (O)you do not accept our testimony.
12"If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
13"(P)No one has ascended into heaven, but (Q)He who descended from heaven: (R)the Son of Man.
14"As (S)Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must (T)the Son of Man (U)be lifted up;
15so that whoever [a]believes will (V)in Him have eternal life.
16"For God so (W)loved the world, that He (X)gave His (Y)only begotten Son, that whoever (Z)believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
17"For God (AA)did not send the Son into the world (AB)to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
18"(AC)He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of (AD)the only begotten Son of God.
19"This is the judgment, that (AE)the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for (AF)their deeds were evil.
20"(AG)For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
21"But he who (AH)practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God."
Go Canada Go!
ReplyDeleteVery pleased that our country has done so well in hosting the world and in sportsmanship and of course winning gold!

This performance of the Soviet Singer was like the Russian version of the Lawrence Welk show! This performance in my opinion was twenty years too late, it seemed to fit the forties or fifties more not the seventies??

Canada did well. I am pleased.
ReplyDeleteWelk is a good comparison.

Ah, well, it was only speculation. But I appreciate your backing it up with statistics.
At least you are not a Soviet robot.

From my Facebook status:
Since I will be looking for prof. work '$oonish' (USA, Earth) someone gave me two pieces of fine used luggage recently. This makes sense to me. After various flights and seeing how baggage is treated in airport conveyor belts I figure new luggage that will soon take a beating is not a good option. But if you like new luggage, cool.;)
I pack light and sometimes once the officials confiscate something that would not have been confiscated the last time I flew, it becomes even lighter.
Thanks for posting an article on the Olympics and Canada, how relevant! Canada has done very well in the Olympics, but its a very expensive event. With that said, the whole Olympic experience has been a positive and uplifting and exciting event!

ReplyDeleteCheers.
I just now entertained myself by running both of your "Russian Singing Robot" videos at once, which made me crack up. ONE of them is bad enough, but TWO of them, AT THE SAME TIME??? Oh, boy. You gotta try it.
ReplyDeleteI just played them now simultaneously and did so on the weekend previously. Twice the lame but hilarious Soviet propaganda from the robot.
ReplyDeleteCheers.
I have been feeling down lately. Of course, living alone, it is easy to focus on self.
ReplyDeletePart of it also has to do with the fact that I have not had a job in almost a year. I had an interview on Tuesday, and I called them back today and left a message, but I still don't know the outcome.
A few days ago, I got into one of the worst arguments with my sister, over the phone, that I have ever gotten into.
Last night, I was playing a WWII simulation first person shooter game online, using voice chat, and some kid kept making smart-aleck comments. I finally just muted him.
Yesterday, I was discussing on Facebook with two guys (the comments that I placed on thekingpin68), and one started acting condescendingly and judgmentally to me, while the other just started arguing with me. I suspect one or both of them may be Charismatics, and I think that is why there was condescending talk from the first guy. (Most of my family are Charismatics, and for 20+ years now, they have basically considered themselves to be spiritually superior to me.) In any case, I had to withdraw from that conversation. I told them I was not there to argue or fight, and that my desire is to witness to the lost, not fight with other Christians. In my months of commenting with you, Russ, you have influenced me, I think, to be more 'tame' in my conversations.
Just now, someone left a comment on one of my past blog articles, denying the Trinity and attacking my article that centered around the word "Echad" as a plural unity. Of course, this was minor compared to comments I used to get in the past.
Ironically, out of all the recent conflicts that I have been experiencing recently, the most 'pleasant' one has been the discussion I have been having with that Muslim on Facebook for about a week now. Even though he denies everything I am trying to convince him of, regarding the Trinity, Jesus, the Bible, etc., at least he has not resorted to ad hominem attacks. This is something that I appreciate in my conversations with him.
Thanks, Jeff.
ReplyDeleteI can only provide general comments. For me, I am spending too much time online and I need to live and teach theology more out there. I am working on getting to that place.
Perhaps you need to that as well?

If I were you, when you fly, I would wear a bullet-proof vest, a helmet and a parachute. Also a button that you can pin on your shirt or jacket that says, "Anti-Terrorist, Pro-Peace" on one side, and, when you flip it over (which should only be done during a hostile terrorist takeover), it says, "Allahu Akbar!" LOL!
I think a parachute and anti-terrorist weapon (other than martial arts) would be cool.
ReplyDeletePerhaps you need to that as well?
ReplyDeleteJust getting outside of the house, even if it is just to walk around the block or go to the store, would be helpful. I should also start exercising again, since I have not done that for quite a while now, and I know that exercise helps against depression. I would not mind even getting two jobs, in order to keep busy. Of course, the first step, like you, is getting even one job.
I think that the internet for me is not near social enough. I am at this present place because of my PhD and previous degrees.
ReplyDeleteI need to move on, but will keep my blogs and Facebook account.
I found a photo of Mr. Khil much older wearing a Russian medal. Hmm, for services to the motherland I suppose (propaganda). Funny stuff though.
One You Tube commenter stated something along the lines that the lobotomy scars were well-hidden.

I'm all for churchs teaching MMA and having fight clubs. My former pastor from Maine got me started in MMA, and people really need to learn how to defend themselves. If they choose not too then do not enter. Rick b
ReplyDeleteInteresting issue.
ReplyDeleteOn one hand I can see how MMA fights clubs can serve as ministry opportunities.
On the other hand I can understand the Christian objection to the sport, and to that kind of violence taking place within a church, even as a sport.
As a compromise self-defence can certainly be taught without ring/cage fighting, in fact standard military style self-defence is not ring/cage fighting but is more based on street fighting scenarios. Although injuries can happen with that type of training as well.
Thanks, Rick.
Very disturbing comment about Hustler's request for nude photos etc. This sickens me beyond explanation!

ReplyDeleteHere is another thought for a topic. I was back again on Interested's blog, She's the atheist I debate.
ReplyDeleteI keep telling her she is a God Hater, She keeps saying, I'm not a God hater, how can I hate something I dont believe in.
So I asked her, Why is it you and other atheists spend so much time talking about a person you do not believe in, you go out of your way to prove a person you dont believe in really does not exist.
I do not believe in Santa, the Easter bunny, the Tooth fairy or any of these people, but I dont spend my life writing and trying to prove they do not exist, And I dont know of any person who does either.
So maybe you could do a topic on that? Rick b
Thank you, Rick.

Sung by Muslim Magomaev. Song written by A. Ostrovsky.
I definitely prefer Eduard Khil.
Jamie sent that to me as well.
ReplyDeleteI think Mr. Khil is talented and skilled. But, that particular presentation is too robotic and silly in some places.
He has other videos which better demonstrate his vocal and musical skill where he looks like less of a Soviet robot.
Edurd Khil has a very polite, warm and friendly response towards his impersonators, it was nice to see such a great attitude from Mr. Khil as he watched other people singing along to his song!
