Blogger, Facebook and Twitter (Is Blogger losing out?)

Yorkshire, Dales, England (photo from trekearth.com)

I am not a member of Twitter and do not know much about it. I am not in any way trying to reflect on it negatively with this article. I have no intention of joining because I am already busy enough online.

Twitter

From the website it states:

Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

I am a member of Facebook.

Facebook

Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life.

After already having two Blogger theology blogs, I joined Facebook to stay in touch with friends that mainly live outside of the Lower Mainland area and to meet new people online.

I also viewed it as an opportunity to promote my blogs, and there is a helpful blog application to promote them on Facebook.

I very much appreciate Facebook...but not as much as I appreciate my blogs.

I post links to my Blogger posts on Facebook but have never intended to place entire Blogger posts on Facebook. This would serve in a sense as another blog that I absolutely do not want as I am busy enough with PhD work and my Blogger blogs.

Even still, please do not misunderstand, I do appreciate very much comments related to Blogger posts left on Facebook.

It would be nice if these comments were duplicated on the blogs, but I realize people are often busy and I do not want to be viewed as a pushy so and so.;)

But, it is enough work writing two Blogger blogs and I do not want to basically write a third blog with pasted posts from satire and theology and thekingpin68 on Facebook.

I also do not want to write an original Facebook theology blog.

But it seems at times over the last few months that Blogger commenting has become less while many of my blog links spend time on Facebook. Some of my Facebook friends seem to perhaps post more theological and Biblical material on Facebook than on a Blogger, WordPress or other blogs.

I realize from experience that social networking is generally easier and often more fun than Blogging.:)

I have started some theological discussions on Facebook which did not translate to more Blogger blog article comments, but predictably more Facebook comments, which once again, I do appreciate very much.

But, if I keep that up I am basically going to be using Facebook as a third theological blog.

I could simply write blog articles in sent Facebook emails and also post a copy in my Facebook profile and then receive related emails from Facebook friends and also comments under the postings in my Facebook profile.

I wonder if it is going to become a trend in the near future for more theological blogging, and more blogging in general, to be done on Facebook then on actual blogs.

I have no ethical/moral problem with blogging on Facebook, but prefer to have professional blogs dedicated to theological, Biblical and philosophical articles with added filler for entertainment and educational purposes as opposed to a blog connected to emails and social networking.

But, that is my take. What is your opinion?

Is Facebook, Twitter, or another social networking service perhaps going to have more on site bloggers in the future than Blogger, WordPress, or other blogs?

Or are dedicated blogs going to remain the primary forum for blogging?

In overall terms, will social networking sites take large amounts of time from bloggers and their blogs?

I think the answer is likely 'no' for the first question and 'yes' with the latter two questions. I am making no ethical/moral judgment here and I am not suggesting people should spend more time on blog sites and less on social network sites.

My Blogger audience is made up of primarily online searches, blog links and friends. These online searches do sometimes include persons from Facebook.

My Facebook audience is primarily Facebook friends.

I reason there is more potential for readership and comments at this point with Blogger. This combined with the nature of dedicated blogs has me wanting to focus primarily on my existing blogs over Facebook in regard to blogging.

The End

Tom Vu says, 'You a looza'.

Mom sent me this picture with description.

'Redneck word of the day : "OBAMA"

I BOUGHT ME A CASE OF BEER AND DRANK IT OBAMA SELF!'

A story on the web that I DID NOT write:

'A BOTTLE OF WINE

A woman and a man are involved in a car accident on a snowy, cold Monday morning; it's a bad one. Both of their cars are totally demolished, but amazingly neither of them are hurt. God works in mysterious ways.

After they crawl out of their cars, the man is yelling about women drivers.

The woman says, 'So, you're a man. That's interesting. I'm a woman. Wow, just look at our cars! There's nothing left, but we're unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should be friends and live in peace for the rest of our days'.

Flattered, the man replies, 'Oh yes, I agree completely, this must be a sign from God! But you're still at fault...women shouldn't be allowed to drive.'

The woman continues, 'And look at this, here's another miracle. My car is completely demolished but this bottle of wine didn't break. Surely God wants us to drink this wine and celebrate our good fortune.' She hands the bottle to the man. The man nods his head in agreement, opens it and drinks half the bottle and then hands it back to the woman. The woman takes the bottle, puts the cap back on and hands it back to the man.

The man asks, 'Aren't you having any?'

The woman replies, 'No. I think I'll just wait for the police....'

  2. Good article, Russ.

Blogging provides articles, Facebook provides a social network and games, and Twitter attracts people who want to post short, trite messages quickly via their phone (providing portability). The three seem to have different purposes, yet Twitter is the 'new rage,' so it's popularity is growing fast.

I think Obama should go to one of Tom Vu's seminars, to learn how to get the U.S. out of debt. Of course, Tom Vu might just say to Obama, "You are a loser! Get out of my life!" ; )

You know, most professional sports are merely spectator sports, but that second video shows how superior ice hockey is, because it actually encourages audience participation. ; )

    That wine story is funny.

  3. Russ, I would suggest this, then: as an alternative to posting your blogs on Facebook, which enables people to comment there, just notify people using your status update that there is a new post and provide a link for it. That way they will have to click through in order to view the blog.

If you don't want to do that, I think there is actually a way to turn off the comments on your notes and/or posted items, though I'm not sure how to do that.

  4. I loved the joke about the wine.

I do not use Facebook, twitter or any of them. I dont blogger will die out as a result of these guys because, they are for keeping in touch with friends, where as Blogs tend to focus on specic topics, Like my food blog for example.

I talk Food, food, food, Plus share recipes and such.

speaking of which, I am heading out know to see a friend who was a chef, now helping people get small bussiness loans to open their own places. I am looking into opening my own little Bakery.

I figure about a year or so before it happens, But if it does I will let you know, so keep me in prayer on that. Thanks. rick b

  5. I've been thinking similar thoughts about this. I've been spending a lot of time on Facebook because, as you say, it is easy and fun to keep up with others this way. In fact, I've been using Facebook so often lately that I've neglected my blog. Of course, I like to keep a post up for at least a week before adding another one anyway; but I find myself on Facebook when I could be preparing another post on Blogger. And I'm also trying to find time to work on my own site which will eventually (I hope) replace my Blogger.

Oh well...Facebook is still somewhat new to me and I think the fascination will fade eventually--I hope so!

"MORAL OF THE STORY: Women are clever and evil."

Funny story, especially right after the redneck photos because I can see either one of them actually doing it! :-)

Chucky and I have seen Tom Vu twice in Vancouver. It was not the free 90 minute 'semina' but the initial presentation. On one occasion he suggests that a buyer find a seller that has had a heart attack and then make them a lowball offer.

    Funny, Jeff.:)

I remember laughing at that clip when I was a child. My brother was at a 1972 game in Vancouver where the Philadelphia Flyers went into the stands at the Pacific Coliseum. It ended up a court case.

Yes, and then there could be a temptation just to post something on Facebook for some, not bothering posting on the actual Blogger (WordPress or other) blog.

    Thanks, GGM.

  10. Hello Russ,

I tried leaving a comment earlier but it came up error by google. So i will try again.

I am not on facebook but my husband is. He is more social than I am. I believe that bloggers and facebook are two different sects of people. For my husband to sit and read a blog is torture for him, and for him to write anything that would take longer than 2 minutes well there is just NO WAY!

I think blogs and bloggers are safe. There are some that like to read and write and there are some that choose short bursts of socialization.

I think blogging will always be around for those who read and write.

Yes. We are not all writers or even readers.:)

I agree, and I hope professional blogs stay important in Western culture and I reason they will even with a few setbacks at times.

  12. I know of a lot of people who are actively on Facebook in comparison to responding to blogs. Blogs are necessary because of their in depth information and discussion forums whereas Facebook is more for communicating personal info about yourself and friends and family to one another. Both are important functions of communication, and although facebook is more popular, it would be nice if more people made an effort to participate in the blogging world.

Wow, that, along with his "You are a loser; get out of my life!" seems to demonstrate that Tom Vu apparently does not have much compassion for people.

I read where Twitter has more 'visibility' than Facebook. I've never used Twitter, but I know that Facebook shows the things you post to all your Friends on Facebook within minutes (and I've seen people with as many as 5,000 Friends on Facebook). Blogger doesn't do this. With blogger, you have to actually go to the person's page (just as with any website). Of course, there are various ways to have your blog post show up on different websites (Google Home Page, Feeds, etc.) automatically. It might be helpful to search out additional ways to have your blog post show up automatically on various other websites, while, at the same time, when they go to make a comment, they are re-directed here. I know that some code must exist to do this. And it may be possible that someone may already have their blog site to work this way.

    This is interesting:

    Facebook moving into Twitter territory

  15. Here are some excerpts from the article Blog Vs. Website? which show some advantages of blog sites over other websites. Although it doesn't address Facebook or Twitter, it may provide some encouragement for bloggers:

"The advantage of a blog is that blogs allows you to post written text, audio and video and have it online within minutes, unlike traditional static websites which can take hours to update and cost you each time - unless you’re familiar with building or editing web sites."

"Each time you publish a blog, you do what is called “pinging” the update services. In other words, you automatically notify the search engines (sometimes indirectly) that there is new content on your site so “come and take a look!” This gives the search engines occasion to come and visit your site to index it. So, another benefit is that blogs tend to be indexed much more often than traditional static websites and, blogs show up 10 times more often in organic searches than static websites do."

"Bloggers establish credibility much faster [than] static website owners because blogs by their very nature build a stronger and more vibrant knowledge base. Sure you can do this by adding articles to your static site but it comes down to cost again and in my view, “findability”. Finding articles on a blog is usually much easier than navigating your way through a static website.

With a blog, you log into your back office, write your blog post and click the “publish” button and your article is on the world wide web ready for anyone who cares to read it and, you can categorize your posts making it easier for people to find you both online and, when they reach your blog.

With a static website, you have to open up your editor, such as Front Page or Dreamweaver, write the article (and, I’m assuming you’re using the existing website template), update the page properties before uploading that page to your site using FTP software. Once you’ve done all of that, you have to “wait” until the search engines do their rounds again, visiting your site to get it indexed. This could take months, depending on the strategies that you employ.

I have had one of my clients blogs indexed within 36 hours and all she did was posted about 10 blog posts which were mainly snippets from her book. The crazy thing was that the posts were not even properly optimized but, her blog got the attention of the search engines."

"Blogs are fads and will die away soon.
Boy … you would have thought these proponents would have cried off by now. But, let’s forget about them … just take a look at the direction the online world is taking and you will see that it makes sense to have a blog EVEN if you decide to build websites too (and, I do encourage both … more on that later) because blogs make podcasting, videocasting and social networking a lot easier if you are non technical.

    No one reads blogs anyway.
This is what some of speakers of The Professional Speakers Association used to tell me when I asked about building a site for my services. Now, I will tell you what I would tell them if they were to give me that same “cookie cutter” answer today … No one reads YOUR blog! If this is you it’s time to spice it up. Give your blog a voice, not a corporate makeover! Humans work in corporations so even if you’re targeting them, they have a sense of humor, they don’t all have MBA’s and use long “unarticulaterable” words (like this one I just made up) and, they want information they can use. So save the Guardian style editorial for your press releases but give them great tips in your blog."

  16. 'Wow, that, along with his "You are a loser; get out of my life!" seems to demonstrate that Tom Vu apparently does not have much compassion for people.'

    Agreed, Jeff.

Yes, and Facebook is still presently far ahead of Twitter in membership.

'The advantage of a blog is that blogs allows you to post written text, audio and video and have it online within minutes, unlike traditional static websites which can take hours to update and cost you each time - unless you’re familiar with building or editing web sites."'

Most successful blogs need networking and humour as well as good solid information that is sometimes technical.

  18. Hey Russ,
My perception of those who twitter is vanity and lazyness. Why not email? Why would anyone believe facebook to be the appropriate venue for blogging? Blogs are for blogging. Facebook blogging is for people who want to share their blogs with their friends.

  19. Cheers, Jim.

I have never been on Twitter, but I know of one blog link at least on Twitter and he seems like a very hard worker to me. Some persons are on many sites including blogs, Facebook, and Twitter and email as well. I have blogged on Facebook and have no problem with it, but mainly have used it to draw people to my Blogger blogs.

But, I think I can gather where you are coming from as some may simply 'Twitter ' time away and avoid emailing and more serious writing. I have seen this issue discussed online.

I do reason that blogging on actual blogs is more professional looking.

    Russ

    ReplyDelete
  20. I suspect some of the reasons Twitter is increasing in popularity may include:

-Our society's mentality of wanting it 'right now.' Tied in with this is the fact that you can post brief, live updates (irrespective of how trivial and frivolous those brief 'updates' may be)

-The fact that many people really don't want to read very much (and yes, I would call that [a cultivated or trained] laziness, likely produced by the fact that many people spend more time watching TV and movies rather than reading books)

-You don't have to be a great writer, since you're only posting no more than 140 characters

-You can post messages using your cell phone (iPhone, or whatever), which is desirable to many because: (1) most people already use a cell phone anyway, and (2) you can post messages while you're on the go, just about no matter where you are

The ease, speed and portability seem to be attractive features of Twitter, I would guess.

However, at this point, I personally do not find myself being tempted to use Twitter. So far, it really does not post much attraction to me. IMO, blogging is superior. And Facebook is fun, but, as you said, Russ, blogging is much more professional.

Regarding that e-mail you received, Russ:

  28. I was Sharing my adventure via email with russ, he said I should post it on here, so here it is.

Well this is kinda hard to explain since your not familiar with the roads around here.

Shelli (my wife)came down with strep throat on Monday, we have 2 cars, 1 We drive, the other we use only if our main car is broken down. Our car we almost never use just sits and rots, It has lots of problems, about 195,000 miles. The muffler fell off, The bumper broke off, the tranny fluid "Pipe" broke, so it was dripping fluid. So since so much was wrong with it, I took the insurance off the car.

Well since Shelli came down with strep, I decide to take the broken car to work so she could take the good car to work. I work 11 miles from home. I made it to work just fine, Then I was coming home from work, I was about 2 miles from home, I have to merge off of the main highway 94 onto 35 and on 35 it is 45 miles per hour.

I was in the far left lane and it just so happens that a funeral lane of cars is in the right lane, I get over into the right lane and the car in front of me slows way down, so I hit the brakes and the pedal goes straight to the floor. My brake went out. So I quickly swerve over to the right and almost hit the wall, I just missed hitting the guy in front of me.

So now I am going down the break down lane heading towards the cop on the motorcycle that is guiding the funeral. He is sitting at a spot where it is an on ramp, so I quickly get back in traffic, I drive past the off ramp and then in front of me if my off ramp. It goes about 1/4 of a mile till it gets to a main road with a stop sign.

I am going up the ramp and a car is behind me, I am slowing down and will not make the top of the ramp, so I give it a little gas to make it to the top, then once I get to the top I see I am not going to stop, So I drop the thing straight into park, thinking it will cause the car to stop, Nope it keeps going, So I start driving on the grass and am thinking I must hit a tree to stop the car, but thats gonna suck not having insurance and trying to explain this to the cops.

Guess what, I ran the tree over and my car did not stop, Now I am thinking, I hope no cars are coming since I am heading towards the main road witch heads down a hill across an over pass. I come off the curb onto the road, Thank God no cars are coming, I go down the hill and am thinking, Crud, this is gonna suck, I'm going down a steep hill with no brakes and I am heading towards a 4 way stop. Again, Thank God no cars were coming, I went right through the stop sign and now I am heading towards Another 4 way stop, But this 4 way stop is a major 4 way stop, so I turn onto a back road and slowly am slowing down but also headed towards my house.

I ran another 4 way stop sign, But it was on a back road and I was not to worried about cars, Then I came to one more stop sign, I needed to turn right and was hoping their was no cars, then at the end of the right turn only about 20 feet I turned right again and my house was at the end of the road. My mom said if it was her she would be worried she would Die, not me, that thought never crossed my mind, I was thinking, Crap, I have no insurance and I will get a huge fine. I was telling my mom, if I had insurance it would have been more fun. Rick b

PS, People said I should have used the emergancy brake. It was off to the side of the steering wheel under the dash, so it was out of site and out of mind.

  31. Hey, Russ. Is there a connection I'm missing, regarding the "You a looza" video? Puzzling. I know how he gets rich, though: by getting folks to pay to hear the three magic words that made him rich: "You a looza!" ;)

I do neither Twitter nor Facebook. I came to blogging mainly because it was faster than updating a website, and I enjoy the interaction. Facebook just doesn't seem as serious, to me, or as respectable. Maybe that's just my impression. I can't say which technology will prevail... maybe all... maybe none. Time will tell, and there's always something new, just around the corner.

Not much help, am I? ;)

  32. Hi Greg,

'Never give up'/'Don't give up', I have read online are the three little words. In my view the Tom Vu infomercials are certainly among the very funniest programs ever on television. I reason that poorly constructed programming that is unintentionally funny is often among the most humorous material. 'You a looza, and 'come to my semina' are Vu sayings that help to produce the comedy.

I am mixed on the program. Morally I am against the use of 'bikini babes' implied as benefits of real estate wealth. I am also against trying to take advantage of the weak in real estate with low ball offers. However, from an entertainment perspective his programs were very entertaining because of the noted unintended humour. Therefore part of me hopes Vu (now a professional poker player) comes out of retirement and promotes his 'semina' once again.

    Cheers, my friend.:)

Like you said, Russ, it can become incredibly difficult to keep up with all the apps on Facebook. I have quit trying, and I only do a couple or so as I have time. I think my virtual Farm has now gone into foreclosure from lack of tending it.

Yes I just ignore application alerts most of the time and I have started deleting many of the right bottom corner alerts. I like Facebook, but not in excess, as I do not have the time.

'I have quit trying, and I only do a couple or so as I have time. I think my virtual Farm has now gone into foreclosure from lack of tending it.

    Both funny, Jeff.

    Cheers.

  35. Hi Russ…

Interesting post…You have planted some seeds that have me thinking about a lot of things…I am finding conversations about blogging culture to be growing in popularity of late (certainly my articles on this are doing well in the blog search engines if not Google). It seems some bloggers are feeling a need to adapt etc.

Personally I made a decision 2 years ago when I started to blog that I would have 2 blogs and to not go for any of the other concepts that come along unless there was a dramatic shift in guest visits. I am willing to adapt but do not want to be a guinea pig (I am willing to lose out by not being an early engager)…Over the past year we have had a dramatic increase in visits and this year has been very good so far. Google and Google Images provide large access portals thru which we get many (read “the vast majority”) of our visits.

When I first started blogging I went for a cross between serious theology and/or a more clear Christian/Biblical point of view in collaboration with more frivolous posts…I didn’t know what I was doing! Since then my approach has shifted dramatically. I have encountered many “Christian” blogs that are extremely blunt in their evangelism and which are often very churchy or full of churchianity. Often we can come across as disingenuous and only after trying to “score some points” with God….Often the theology is weak…Some of the things I appreciate about your blogs are the intellect and care directed towards good theology…and the fact that you are personable and genuine…

Another thing I have noticed is that most Christian blogs are Christians talking to one another…even on the evangelism blogs…I started by attempting to talk to both Christians and non-Christians but have found it much more beneficial to focus less on Christians and evangelism but glorifying God. I have found we have less Christian commenters but many non-Christians that can be very thoughtful and interesting…I would like more Christian comments but it seems that our rather non-family focused articles/look/feel does not always make Christians feel comfortable or that they are on a real Christian blog. However I believe this perception changes if they look in the comment section where the heavy lifting takes place. Indeed I now backload most of the heavy theology into the comment section tailored to each guests inclinations instead of trying to force feed them within the article itself…I like this approach because it is not common and also because it is successful (for example we have had many non-Christian people tell us they have purchased a Bible and are studying it because of our blogs. We now have relationships with these persons through email…)

Indeed the more I treat our blogs as non-evangelising the more people seem receptive to the message…This however does not mean watering down the message but simply being creative about how we engage…If people think you are all about converting them then they often want nothing to do with you. One of the areas it seems we have become specialists in is conversations about sex and sexual issues. As I didn’t become a follower of Jesus (former atheist) till I was 28 and before that led a very hedonistic life I am an “expert” on this…Originally this was not my intent but our blogging on Survivor has created “demand” and access…

When I started blogging I thought this is great I can use it to network with friends and family etc in concert with emails…however this has not been the case. Few of my friends or family visit my blogs and none of them comment. They do email me at times about my articles (or talk to me in person) but never comment on the blogs (except for the occasional comment from local friends that also blog). Some of them have entered our Fantasy Hockey contest (here is a link to our Playoff version…we could use some Canadians in it! *Hint hint* AND you do have a hockey video in this post!):

I hope I have not gone too far a field here but your article is a very nice launch pad for many kinds of conversations so…then I guess it is your fault for doing such a good job! LOL

    :)

  38. I'm for blogging. For one, I just got started, so I hate to think it is on its way out! Two, it is a great way for writers, theologians, etc. to put valuable information out there for other people to access. I'm finishing an M.Div. Good luck on your Ph.D.
